Title: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread
Post by: Axem on September 06, 2014, 09:07:53 pm
This was the original JAD2.21 release post, but now its a general discussion thread!

Please post your thoughts about the campaigns, as well as silly suggestions, bug reports and one true pairings.

Just Another Day is a series of parody campaigns based on FreeSpace and other related Sci-Fi concepts. Just Another Day 1, 2 and 3 feature the unfazeable Alpha 1 and FRED, god of this universe as they fight for truth, justice and the proper way campaigns should be made. These campaigns can be played here! (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71634.0)

The Just Another Day 2.2 Series takes place after JAD2, when FRED gets cast into another dimension due to events that transpired there! Without FRED, the Just Another Day Reference Bible is up for grabs, and the poor souls who Beta Tested the series want it for themselves.

Only one girl can save the universe from these suddenly appearing demigods, mysterious shadowy councils and internet in-jokes. And that girl is... 19th century English Computer Programmer Forerunner, Augusta Ada Lovelace! Or some ditz named Holley. Whoever's available.

It's a weird world full of references from other FreeSpace campaigns, anime and anything else that happened across my bizarre mind. So I invite you to help Holley and her friends make the most of an exciting adventure to save their universe and, if they have time, find true love.

This is part 1 of probably 3 parts. Here Holley learns what it means to be a hero, why you should make friends, and why carrot cake is so delicious.

If you've played an earlier LEAKED BETA (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78384.0) version before, there have been some changes to this new version. Here's a few new things that changed between then and now:
  • Updated graphics (skyboxes, beams, models, mainhalls)
  • Full color head anis featuring original art for the main characters (hand crafted by Spoon)
  • Interactive campaign map
  • Refined certain gameplay feature such as the Recettear store
  • Journal Screen with some bonus stories after the main campaign is finished
  • Added "Visual Novel" scenes for a few missions
  • Slightly altered gameplay/balance for a few bosses
  • Subtly edited text featuring 15% more laughs

Specific Weapon Changes (mostly affects JAD:XA at the moment)
  • Ahketon Leech - Subsystem damage increased
  • Starlance - Damage Increased, Power Consumption increased
  • Rockeye MMM - Now only fires a swarm of 25 (instead of 100 (though JAD:XA had it at 25 as well)), fire wait is now just 6s (from 15s), damage is reduced by half
  • Africanized Hornet - Now half of the child hornets will inherit the parent target, the other half still look for things to sting. Firewait increased, damage slightly increased as well
  • Twisterado - Damage radius increased, blast force increased.

Required Build:
3.7.2 Final ONLY (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=50.0)
Nightly builds post-3.7.2 will not work (yet). Sorry for the inconvenience!

Other Requirements:
2014 MediaVPs (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86475.0)
(Due to other mods I use, cockpit mods will probably not work correctly)

Download:
Use the FSO Installer! (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87537.0) (Much ease. Very one-click.)
Advanced users can download the archive here (http://lazymodders.fsmods.net/releases/campaigns/JAD2-21.rar). Just throw the contents in a folder called /JAD2-2/.

If you have an existing installation, I would recommend you delete the old one first! Please make sure jad2-21-core.vp, jad2-21-missions.vp, and 1_jad2-21-ova1.vp are gone. The installer should remove those for you, but check anyway!

Also Xtreme Arcade now uses JAD2.21 as a parent mod, so you can go back and forth between JAD2.21 and JAD:XA without even needing to exit FreeSpace. You will need to re-download JAD:XA though, but it’s a lot smaller now!

This has changed way more from beta than I expected. And there are a number of things I didn't even know were possible. For example, the moving arms of Cain cruiser!!! WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!

Overall, a pure work of art, Axem!  :pimp: You really are the shining light in demonstrating new SCP features once again.

Okey Dokey! So I played through it multiple times and I can safely say I am very satisfied with it. Big game companies should take note about the term Beta and Release from you because this amount of polish is not present in today's games. Campaign was awesome, Epsilon 1's stabbed toe must've been painful, still trying to beat the damned endless gauntlet so I still have things to do with this little gem. Another frakking masterpiece from Axem. Thanks for filling my boring little grey life with just the right amount of humor, sillyness, laughter, over the top bosses and most importantly beamzzz. (There are never enough beamzzz) Now I'm waiting for Alpha 1 x Holley fanfictions mwahahahahahaha

Frak yes!

Edit: Oh and thanks for notifying me about the installer. Somehow skipped that announcement and only found out now that SCP has one.

Man i havent played in ages, a little rusty.
None the less this is EPIC!!!!!!!!!! I love the changes you made from the Beta.
Honestly you can hardly tell (apart from the models) that it is a FreeSpace game. All the features you have introduced give a great element to the story telling.
Excited for JAD 2.22 now :D
Also any chance eventually of re-remastering the original trilogy with some of the new features?

Edit: Is that a upgraded Volition Bravo's I saw......cause that is doubly awesome

Glad you loved it. :)

It's unlikely I'll update the original trilogy aside from bug fixes. Original trilogy JAD is about going nuts with mostly retail assets (Shivans on a Plane is the only exception). New trilogy JAD is about going nuts with every element possible!

Also its not really a new Volition Bravos. The pirate ship is from Kingdom Hearts 2 (which someone else on the internet had ripped), so its not really an "original model".

Hi friends,

I can not start the game with the following engines on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit:
3.7.1 64bit self-compiled
3.7.1_20140903_r11062
3.7.2_RC4
I can start it with 3.7.2_RC4-debug, but it crashes. Log attached.

Code: [Select]
ASSERTION: "vm_vec_mag(plane_normal) > 0.999f && vm_vec_mag(plane_normal) < 1.001f" at vecmat.cpp:106
This looks like the problem... but it's vague enough that I have no idea what's causing it...

Could you try deleting these two files?

Code: [Select]
Found root pack '/home/oliver/Freespace2/JAD2-2/1_jad2-21-ova1.vp' with a checksum of 0x1f0528c9
Found root pack '/home/oliver/Freespace2/JAD2-2/jad2-21-core.vp' with a checksum of 0xa0c53cca

They're leftovers from the old installation, and while they're probably not the cause, but they might cause conflicts later... :( It still might be worth a try.

Maybe also remove this command line flag:

Code: [Select]
  -mipmap

Also, I've got the new JAD running on Mint17 which is practically ubuntu 14.04.  I do have a newer video card though (GTS 450) which supports OGL 4.4.0.

removing "mipmap" didnt work, but renaming those files to "*.bak". 3.7.1 self compiled.

Thanks for your help

That's a neat issue that's I've never seen before. Something with one of my sexps is failing wonderfully. It doesn't look like it would happen all the time so you should be able to continue to play. I will still look into the problem for future releases. Thanks!

Sorry if this is old news, but the mod is refusing to recognize my 1280x1024 monitor, displaying the Y U No guy asking why I don't have at least 1024x768. When I drop it down to that it the launcher, the screen flickers as soon as it gets past the loading screen. Is there an official fix for this? I've gotten it working once before but the same tricks aren't doing it this time.

Nope, never heard of this problem before. And what a silly problem this is too! 1280x1024 is a screen res that I hadn't quite taken into account, so the game defaults to looking at the 640x480 files.

Can you save the attachment below and place it in your JAD2-2/data/tables/ directory and see if things work?

Nothing can detract from JAD fun!
After all it is like my 4th playthrough :D
As long as you don't fail this doesn't happen and even if you fail it sometimes still doesn't happen.

Keep up the good work Axem, looking forward to JAD 2.2

Just a heads up to people who want to play JAD2.2 with nightly builds that come after 3.7.2 or deferred/soft shadows or PBR builds:

JAD will not work with them!

Yet.

Basically I really really wanted the Team Colors feature to work with glow maps and to do that I needed someone to make me some custom shaders to do that. Well now that all the shaders have been upgraded, the ones I have won't work right anymore... Swifty has it on his to-do list to permanently add that feature in so I won't be high and dry in the future, but in the mean time the only recommended build right now is 3.7.2 Final.

It'll work now if you update JAD in the installer now and use 3.7.4 RC1 or beyond!
Title: RELEASE: Just Another Day 2.22 Preview
Post by: Axem on March 31, 2016, 08:29:57 pm
I am proud to announce that this JAD party is just getting started now!

I'd have a more elobrate release post here, but I used all my energy on the new encyclopedic JAD omni-release post. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=91783.new#new)

So just go run the installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87537.0) and find JAD2.22 Preview and install it!

Do it now!

(A special build is required, but the windows exe is included with the download. People with other O/Ss can check out the main release post for a github branch link.

Then post comments and praise.

And kittens.

Silliness and references aplenty. I feel bad that the reference in the first mission had flown over my head up until near the end. I remember I played that before and it was fun.

The updated UI elements and HUD are really nice; very crisp and clean.

If Windows isn't your thing, you can build your own build with from source using this branch from niffiwan's github repo: https://github.com/niffiwan/fs2open.github.com/tree/apng_jad

Also you appear to be missing jad221_root.vp... This was updated recently, so maybe try running the installer again and hopefully it'll catch that its missing. If its still missing, you can manually download the files here. (http://lazymodders.fsmods.net/releases/campaigns/JAD2-21.rar)

Okay, that's good to hear then! Yes, there will be more later on. This was just a short preview that I thought would be great to release early.

The plan right now is to get JAD2.21 updated with the new visual novel drama talky scenes and new animated head anis first, and then finish polishing the all new and complete JAD2.22.

It is my goal to achieve both of those things this year.

Also if people are having issues, please post them in the troubleshooting thread. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=91784.0) That way it clears this thread up and any problems solved will be easier to find for the next person that has them. ;)

Also everyone be sure to share your final choice during Delta 1's mission. I couldn't get the telemetry tracking to the cloud to work so I need to rely on everyone's honesty. (Laaame)

On my first playthrough I went with the first option. I was sort of disappointed when the ending barely changed when I chose the second option. Oh well  :P.

Overall, both missions were great. Loved the Starcracker cameo in the first mission, in particular, given what the mission was about. The spotter beam gimmick in the second mission was very well done. This was fun to play, and I eagerly await the full release!

First option? You Monster! :p

(that's the go-on-a-star-killing-spree option right?)

I chose the 2nd option on my 1st playthrough; and given the results I didn't really expect it to change for the 1st option (but I tried it anyway :))

Heh yes, the overall effects of the choice you make are pretty... inconsequential in the grand scheme of things... But that's what you get for Delta 1 telling a flashback.

I tried playing JAD 2.22 preview with the apng build, just as playing through the bomber vs. cruiser mission, it crashes. I think this is due to some bug in apng code.
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread

Well that's a shame. Could you try a debug build (as linked to here (http://www.mediafire.com/download/dpyiizm5ncnityg/fso_apng.7z)) and try to recreate the problem? And please give a bit more detail. Where exactly did it crash? What sort of error message did it give? Was it a FreeSpace error message or a standard Windows "program has become unresponsive". You can post your findings and debug.log in the Troubleshooting Thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=91784.0).

Also there is a missing graphic (railgun_p) that debug will warn about, but it would not be the cause for any crashes.

Tell you what, I'm feeling super generous. You can have a scene where Holley calls you a nerd AND you'll be an actual NPC that flies with the player in an escort mission. Survival not guaranteed.

And maybe... maybe if the opportunity presents itself, I'll let your status carry over and someone can call you by the wrong name in a later mission.

OR

You can trade it all for what's in this box

(Anyone else want a cameo? Room for one more in Viper's wing)

'Kay so Cobra and Mongoose will be paired up as expendable wingmen (OTP). Admiral Ralwood will be some old crusty admiral that drunkenly dares other admirals to invade random planets.

Also no voice acting! I would literally die if I ever ventured in that direction for JAD.

I had a lot of fun with the 2.2 campaigns. I didn't think VN sequences in an fs2 mod would ever be a thing I would see or enjoy but it's a nice change from struggling to read dialog and play the game at the same time. I'm excited to see/play the full 2.22 release based on the preview, also excited for future releases of WoD (all that VN art done by spoon  :o).

The Xtreme Arcade was also probably the most fun campaign that I almost never played, it also had awesome music.

I can't find 2.21 or 2.22 Preview on the FSO Installer, so I'm using the files as available here: http://lazymodders.fsmods.net/releases/campaigns/

I've got the 3.7.5 .exe selected in wxLauncher, but I get the following error...

...for what looks like every ship in the table file. Any ideas? Or am I unsupported in this?

Edit: I'm specifically trying to run 2.22.

Double Edit: Fixed it by specifying JAD 2.21 as a dependancy. However, now I get a different error when it loads:

Ack, more bad errors... There is new large JAD2.21 patch that is like just a few weeks away! I hate to turn away people, but could you check back in a few weeks? That problem will be fixed and everything else will be 1000% more amazing.
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread
Post by: RyuHimora on June 17, 2016, 10:58:12 am
No problem. It looks like the issue is that 2.21 isn't available in the FSO Installer, so the lua folder isn't being installed. Is there somewhere I can get that separately?
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread
Post by: Axem on June 17, 2016, 12:12:55 pm
The problem is actually a file that was accidentally not included during a small patch update. That file is responsible for telling the game exactly how to load some external lua libraries and it tries to look in a few different folders, but won't actually find it.

If you really really really really need to play, you can take the attachment below and put it in the mod's /data/tables/ folder and it should fix the problem. (I hope)

I'm getting a different error now, but the mod is working.

Thanks man, you are awesome. JAD 2.21 is what inspired me to pick up FRED again and actually learn it. Still working on my mission design, though. The complexity of JAD 2.21 missions is staggering, but seeing that something like this is even possible in a game engine old enough to drive a car is very encouraging to me.

I dunno, a TC 2 is 24x24x34m. Might be small to other FreeSpace ships, but that'd be plenty of space for one person to hide out in. Even filling half the volume with cookies.

EDIT: Super quick measurements: 24x24x34 = roughly 20,000 cubic meters. So let's devote half of that to cookie stowage. Let's call 1 pack of cookies 0.1 cubic meters in volume (probably less). That's 100,000 packs of cookies, multiply by say 30 cookies in a pack, so there's room for about about 3 million cookies. Give or take.

Yeah I'd never want to leave either.

EDIT 2: I actually went and measured a cookie box. It's actually about 0.001 cubic meters. So that's 10 million packs of cookies. 300 million cookies then.

As spacious as the containers may be in theory, I would accept no less than a good stately manor on a pristine Earth-like planet to share with Alpha 1.

And a high speed holonet connection of course.

Epsilon 1 can live all he wants in a dumb dingy cargo container that was used to transport Aspu-Hek lard.

Just as long as he's atleast 3 systems away from me.

Now Holley, just cause Epsilon 1 is plain, boring, simple, slow, emotionless, possibly a clone and lacks any cool powerups/bezerk modes; doesn't mean you have to be so mean to the guy.

2 and a half systems would have been more appropriate, 3 just crossed the line on offensiveness i think.......not cool.

What in the world is the script for Hamlet doing in the tables folder?

I think he thought it would make the mod more classic, dramatic and tragic at the same time. :P

That first mission. This is going to be fun.

Later:

You're going to have to try really hard to make an ending better than this. You magnificent bastard.

I had large amounts of fun playing this mod. Only encountered one issue where I had to skip a mission, but everything else was loads of fun.

Also, I know this is supposed to be a collision between JAD and anime, but I did NOT expect a Japanese dub of YMCA to start playing.

Helm, engage FreeSpace Installer.

Spoiler:
EDIT: In the mission where you go after the radio station, if you start from the boss fight checkpoint, after you defeat the boss it starts playing the dialogue from the beginning of the mission and the initial wave of fighters spawns in. I was just able to start fighting them as the mission faded out.

I had a ton of fun throughout pretty much the entire campaign. The writing was funny, the missions were fun to play, and the music was great. I don't have anything to complain about other than a couple bugs that were fixed pretty quickly.

Some specific things I liked:
Spoiler:
The intro, the vn sequence mini-game where you have to find the imposter, the mission where you attack the radio station, the mission where you jump between different points in the system, the use of new world symphony in the optional mission that introduced Henrietta (that mission's also really hard on higher difficulties), the mission where anna shows up (and what happens if you chose not to help her), the music during the boss fight with the eleventh beta tester, and the ending mission and cutscene.

Spoiler:
I also noticed that the acronym for delta 1's over complicated life flowchart would be CASSANDRA

Definitely one of my favorite fs2 campaigns/mods.

2.21 in progress. I'm really loving JAD. I have one question. I'm at the sixth Beta Tester. Is there anything specific I need to do for Holly to say the 75% line? Out of 6 attempts, I only got it once. And then I was overpowered by friendship. And then I tried again, and nothing happened again.
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread

That is odd, I've never had that happen before. I guess just keep shooting at the Befriendinator until you get the message. And avoid the friendship beam so you won't get hit!

I x64d, though I don't remember if I shot at the Core, and nothing happened. I probably did. Anyway, I passed it. Now I'm stuck at the Seventh, which keeps warping out before I bore him with my Epsilon 1 powers. Not for long.

Err, nevermind the Seventh part. Guess you have to shoot instantly, since you're on target.

So I finished JAD 2.22 today. It was pretty damn cool and the cheesy humour worked well. I was cracking a smile most of the time I was going through it. Some of the fail debriefs were especially funny(I personally think using a smoke bomb as a solution for awkward moments is perfectly acceptable). The characters are pretty lovable and everything flowed pretty well.

Buuut... I was really disappointed with the bossfights. That's a bit of a problem since bossfights were like 50% of the gameplay. The bossfights in 2.21 were really cool and full of new mechanics. The bossfights in 2.22 were mostly "shoot the thing while being overwhelmed by 2000 infinitely respawning fighters". It was especially annoying when those infinitely respawning fighters also had cluster missiles.
My entire HUD was circled by yellow missile indicators and the missile lockon warning sound is still ringing in my head. In the mission "Get Revengance" I had to sick Epsilon 1 on the targets while I tried to survive against the infinite waves of Shivans. Any other strategy eventually got me killed because trying to both dodge 200 missiles heading my way and shoot the boss was just too difficult. It was kinda funny the first time it was done but it got really old really fast. I understand the player needs things to kill to fuel the berserk system but like 20 at once is a bit too much while you're supposed to be killing the boss.

I don't want to be a sourpuss but this 2000s mission design isn't really fun for me no matter how ironic it is. It really feels like one of those old and unbalanced messes where throwing infinite fighters at the player while he's supposed to be doing something else was considered fun.

Well, it's called insane for a reason. JAD has pretty exclusively been play tested on medium-hard difficulty, and on medium the amount of fighters that can attack you and fire missiles at you is 4. So if there are 5 or 20 fighters around its kind of a moot point, and it rarely becomes actually difficult. On insane, that is of course a different story.

It sucks to hear you didn't have fun because of difficulty, but then why not just turn the difficulty setting down a notch?
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread
Post by: Spoon on March 05, 2017, 07:09:13 am
I mean sure, ideally there should have been ai_profile.tbl that limits the amount of attackers/missile locks to the player a bit. But when your testing a mod that is as absurdly complex as JAD with just two people, things slip between the cracks.

The '2000s mission design' comment stings a bit.

The '2000s mission design' comment stings a bit.

I know, I was totally trying for 1990s. :(

Are you playing insane? I think I missed that but I'm just guessing you are since insane has next to no limits on incoming missiles and attackers (and hard only has 7 missions on the player and 5 enemies targeting them). Admittedly, I never tested anything on insane so this unforeseen side effect was... quite unforeseen. :nervous: I'll introduce a non-insane limit on missiles/hostiles targeting the player in the next patch.

(Also why bring Epsilon 1?????)

Well, it's not the difficulty per se that killed it. There are technically harder campaigns out there. It's just that the gameplay becomes... kinda monotone and kinda frustrating on insane. I didn't really think of lowering the difficulty because I kinda forgot about the max player attackers and max missiles locked on player ... thing since most mods use saner numbers nowadays. For the other factors it didn't really seem like I'd have more fun if I died 20% slower and had 20% more weapon energy.

$Max Missles Locked on Player:                 2,    3,    4,    7,    99
$Max Player Attackers:                             2,    3,    4,    5,    99

Hey, those numbers are totes retail!

As for Epsilon 1... well I was just couldn't get enough straightman deadpan so I brought him along. Delta 1 would probably have been the saner choice if I knew it would be a mission where your wingman needs to blow up lots of capships.

The script to spawn enemies at runtime is pretty impressive, I'll admit, but it is true that having a constant stream of mooks pouring in nonstop when the focus is supposed to be on the boss is rather distracting, especially on Insane where they have no restrictions on dogpiling and become an actual threat.

Maybe a compromise solution? Rather than an endless respawn that makes it look like there is no progress, have them appear in waves (i.e. check for respawns every 60 seconds, no more than eight mooks at the time, adjust numbers as needed). Enough to build a decent berserk meter, not enough to be overly distracting. The beta tester should be the alpha menace around.
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread
Post by: Axem on March 05, 2017, 12:17:42 pm
Well the default spawn cap is 10, so there's usually 10 fighters out for your blood. And unlike other mods, there's a lot less friendlies to draw away enemies too, so that just makes things worse. What you describe indeed doesn't sound that fun. I didn't intend for those mook fighters to be robbing your attention from the bosses so much, they were just supposed to be there for getting powered up, and dropping power ups. (I'd usually just forget about them once I was powered up enough!)

Maybe I'll try to implement Torchwood's idea and see how it goes to make it less hectic.

How long are you cooking it for? Be sure the texture reaches a golden brown before turning the engines off. There is a secret sweet spot within that golden brown region that will get you a potential S-Rank cake.

I had stopped it when it said golden brown.  I've done that a number of times but still can't seem to get a good rating (even with good ranking ingredients).

When I got a bad grade on the cake, the 'debriefing' scene had Holley's friends act like they liked it but one of the friends secretly brought a better cake in and switched them.

Is that scene different if you get a good cake grade?
Title: Re: Just Another Day: Just Another Discussion Thread

No, Holley never actually makes a good cake. I can only believe that good ranks given for cakes were based off of hallucinations by the judges. (Luckily Holley's friends know what they're getting into before hand!)

I noted when I accepted the challenge to defeat Dissy in "Very Ultra Rare Limited Edition" (M07b), and when I destroy one of its cores, it will explode, and does not progress any further. This was the case for the junkyard part in "...Get Revengeance" (M07d) when I destroy all unknown vessels to 1% where the Tenth Beta Tester dock only to self destruct and flee.

Are these flaws?

So even if Holley gets an "S" grade on her cake, her friends will still despise her food the same as if she got a 'bad' grade?

But the problem is, when he takes control of them (when they are critical, i.e. say 1%), it will self destruct. If all self-destructed, the Tenth will fly out, thus impeding mission progress.

Didn't work on JAD??? How dare you, good sir! Well, that was a lot of fun. I was smiling and laughing for basically the whole campaign!

Some highlights for me:
Spoiler:
The way you did the close-up shots of various ships during the campaign was excellent.
The Titanic Unicorn felt closer to a narwhal than a unicorn for me. Still, though, how much influence did Holley have in that project?
The GTB Rheavengeance from the dream mission was cool and funny, the shot of the jaw opening to reveal the cannon was one of my favorites.
I actually died on the sequence where you destroy the transmitters on the Molybdenum Gear and saw that game over screen. Really went the extra mile there.
The revelation that Epsilon 1 was actually (an) Alpha 1 caught me a bit by surprise, but it definitely made sense after some thought.
The various anime songs during the sequence where you escape Alpha 1's memories really got me pumped.
The way the percentages increased as you collected the cores was amusing.
Changing the time compression to make the overloaded berserk mode easier to handle was definitely a good idea.
STEELE 05 kept his hat for the escape sequence!

Things I didn't quite like:
Spoiler:
The mission where you defeat Henrietta CTD'd twice for me. May try to get a debug log eventually, but the third time was the charm. Also, flying the Rhea makes the first parts of that mission completely trivial.
For as cool as it was, I felt the sequences where you escape from Alpha 1's memories and where STEELE tries to lure Holley away with temptations were a little too long.

Overall, very well done. This was a fun ride!

Have you ever watched a show/anime that you're a huge fan of and it delivers an epic finale that hits all the right notes and satisfying conclusion? Have you ever got to the end of a novel or movie and feel sadness knowing that the story is over, wishing it would continue on? That's how I'am feeling. Axem, give yourself a bow cause I standing up and applauding.

If I remember correctly, you posted that for this final release, you were thinking of having a single mission and the rest would be in a visual novel sequence. I am very thankful that you decided to end it the way you did. The missions were intense and heart-pounding, the music evoked all of the right emotions. The in-game cut-scene choreography is stellar and somehow you were able to still cram it full of humor.

Many of my highlights were the same as those already posted in this thread however I wanted to make a special mention to one in particular: "Alpha 1 Forever". The whole mission is just so much fun and chaotic with the music hyping you up along the way. Battling all the beta testers at once in a limited time window added an extra adrenaline rush. I managed to win on my first try with a few seconds to spare and I got to say, I really felt like an Alpha 1 afterwards. It may very well be my new favorite Freespace mission of any mod campaign out there.

Its very hard to believe that this story that started way back in 2011 has finally come to a end. I can barely remember what the first release of JAD 2.21 looked like without the extras that been added to it. Look how far its come. Thank you for sticking with it and creating this masterpiece of a series!

Thanks so much for the kind review! And thanks for being a fan since the beginning! Hard to believe that much time has passed since the first JAD release.

Alpha 1 Forever is my favorite mission in the whole campaign too. When I was making it I was thinking about my original cut down plans, "if JAD2.23 was only going to have one mission, this would be it". It's also kind of funny that the mission wasn't part of the original outline, it was some "what if I..." and going full effort on everything that brought about making the mission. So I'm really glad to see it all paid off wonderfully.

JAD 2.23 is good. Really damn good. I finished my first playthrough shortly after release and recently finished my third one. And I still find it really hard to say anything meaningful about it aside from "it's good because it's fun". The bosses aren't as complex or gimmicky as 2.21 or 2.22 and the core mechanics and weapons are still essentially the same but most of the missions take their core concept to its absolute extreme, fitting for the last entry in the 2.2......... series.

The mission with the 5 gates is a real standout.
Spoiler:
As you fight through the various FSO mod universes and finally end up with a massive multi-boss battle against most previous JAD 2.2 bosses in the end. The way that fight is carefully choreographed behind the scenes and the way it reacts to which bosses you choose to go after first is just great. It's also a real challenge for both your planning, 3D awareness, and pure piloting skills as you kite the bosses around and take them down 1 by 1 while exploiting each one's unique weak points.

It's not as intricately detailed or polished as BtA, its core flight and combat aren't as cathartic as WoD, and its story isn't as gripping as BP. But it's just straight up "fun" as much as that word has lost any real meaning in relation to video game discussion.

And I still find it really hard to say anything meaningful about it aside from "it's good because it's fun".

Guys, you're killing me here. :p

But thanks for the kind words and kind review. It's good to hear that mission is another highlight to someone.

When i heard that jad 2.23 was about to be released i was like 'ah sh*t here we go again' and played it chronologically again for like the 5th time just to refresh my mind again.
the beginning in 2.23 was really good for me (the first mission is probably the most hype/epic moment i ever had in the jad series), i would even say too good of a beginning that i set my expectations too high.

The inside jokes were the best thing about JAD (and the crazy amounts of fun gameplay in 2.2x) kept me coming back after many years, but for some reason when i saw the 'the end' after the credits i was like 'what? no way!'.

The first red flag for me was the mission select screen having less main missions, now i don't think that a campaign needs 32 missions and more, i prefer 16 or less in my opinion and i thought jad2.22 was hitting the sweet spot perfectly, but not even optional missions in 2.23?

So after finishing all of the JAD campaigns chronologically i had the following questions in mind:
Where are the optional missions in 2.23?
Where is the club room content in 2.23?
Also playing more as alex or even once as meddy, sherry or harriet could have been fun.
Spoiler:
What happened to the first and eight beta tester in 2.23?
Why does alpha 1 have suddenly a gf in 2.23 when he clearly doesn't have anyone close in the original trilogy?
Why is there a sudden skip into the future in 2.23's ending when JAD3 exists?
Why should anyone play JAD1,2,3 when it probably is not even part of the 2.2x universe? is 1.0 and 2.0 even canon at this point? i mean those two alpha 1's are completelly different in how they act.
How does FRED even return in JAD3? is it first and eight beta tester related?
Am i doing something wrong when i play the JAD original with the new campaigns in the JAD1 -> JAD2 -> JAD2.21 -> JAD2.22 -> JAD2.23 -> JAD3 fashion?
How can playing this in a chronological order be more confusing to me than the entire evangelion plot???

I don't know why but for the first time i felt actually mixed/confused about JAD's story.  :wtf:
Unless i am doing it wrong and shouldn't actually play them that way but by release date instead.

The lack of optional content makes me feel like that this release could have been better if it was in development for another year or two, but that doesn't mean i suddenly dislike JAD, i thought there was much more in terms of optional content when there wasn't at all since that was actually something that i really liked personally.

The fredding on the other hand... holy f... some missions i would have thought they would never be possible or would crash instantly but man i can't believe how the engine can even handle all of this complex scripting, no really i never crashed once and it was rock stable but maybe some fps drops but good lord this is just absolute fun and insanity: the campaign.

Hey, thanks a lot for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Like you, I'm a little sad that there wasn't more of JAD to completely finish everything off or answer every single question. I made a post a couple years ago expressing at how difficult and draining it became to keep on making content like this and I was unsure what exactly JAD2.23 was going to even look like. At the start of 2019 I felt I had gotten enough creative energy back to finish off JAD in a satisfying way, and I gave myself a deadline of "by end of the year". And I'm pretty happy I managed to hit that. I didn't get to include everything I wanted, but I wouldn't have liked to hold up release because of optional extra stuff. But not only that, but while I was making the ending, I was almost all out of energy and motivation. And just the closure and finality of everything made it hard to even think about new stuff. It's like everyone's story here is now more or less over. It felt weird to try and reopen that again.

So I hope you can understand why there's no extra content. I did have some rough plans for some. I'll share some details about it later, but don't count on it being made.

And to give general answers to your other questions...

Spoiler:
What happened to the first and eight beta tester in 2.23?
FRED is the First Beta Tester (as he would have to be the first one to play his own missions), the Eighth went on some other weird adventure in other dimensions. But she did eventually return for JAD3 for the GTVAngelion mission.

Why does alpha 1 have suddenly a gf in 2.23 when he clearly doesn't have anyone close in the original trilogy?
Alpha/Epsilon 1 was single in JAD 1 and 2, him and Harriet only became a thing in JAD2.23. The Alpha 1 in JAD3 is a different Alpha 1.

Why is there a sudden skip into the future in 2.23's ending when JAD3 exists?
So I realize I'm reeeeally stretching the timelines and stuff but JAD3 hasn't happened yet in the flash forward in 2.23's ending. (Holley's kid asks what happened to FRED, so he hasn't returned yet). I realize that this makes JAD3 take place some 30-40 years after FS2 and they're still using FS2 ships but uh... FRED really likes retail ships?

Why should anyone play JAD1,2,3 when it probably is not even part of the 2.2x universe? is 1.0 and 2.0 even canon at this point? i mean those two alpha 1's are completelly different in how they act.
That's a pretty interesting question and I think that is the primary issue Holley has when she discovers this truth too. What is the real truth, and what does it mean to me? Does this glaring contradiction mean everything born from it make it worthless? Stuff to discuss and think about!

How does FRED even return in JAD3? is it first and eight beta tester related?
Mysteries!

Am i doing something wrong when i play the JAD original with the new campaigns in the JAD1 -> JAD2 -> JAD2.21 -> JAD2.22 -> JAD2.23 -> JAD3 fashion?
You can play however you like!

How can playing this in a chronological order be more confusing to me than the entire evangelion plot???
That's up to you and your FRED.

Just finished this. Thought I'd throw out a few rambling thoughts and impressions while I've still got it fresh in my mind.

I went in expecting a fun and light-hearted conclusion to the adventures of Holley and friends, using the power of friendship to overcome the bad guys.

(Don't get me wrong, the finale delievered this in spades)

But I wasn't expecting the unabashed love letter to FreeSpace and its community. I'm talking about "Alpha 1 Forever", a mission that will be talked about long into the future whenever someone brings up JAD. When the
Spoiler:
HLP community members
started appearing as well as the
Spoiler:
references to Inferno, Blue Planet, Derelict etc,
I admit I did feel a flicker of emotion. (I ended up failing that mission about ten times, so definitely lots of emotion involved; the difficulty of the JAD beta tester battle was brutal even at the easiest difficulty setting).

I've only taken a passing interest in anime in the past and I haven't seen Evangelion, so I suspect a lot of the references were lost to me. However I do feel that a lot of the themes of JAD (+/- Evangelion?) are universal: the power of friendship to overcome, Love Conquers All, the real Alpha 1 were the friends we made along the way etc.

My personal highlights:

Spoiler:
  • MOOOOOOO
  • In fact the entire MGS battle was awesome and entertaining (so much so that I didn't mind hammering at the mission for three or four attempts - that final transmitter was a tough beast)
  • Henrietta's Final Form
  • Beautiful winged seraphim Herc 2's flying in a distant circle. I would have enjoyed more development about STEELE's different projects - the contrast between the nightmares and the winged fighters was a nice touch - but I understand time and creative energy was a big factor towards the end there.
  • Alpha 1 Forever

JAD is one big massive tribute to the HLP commuinity and the love of FreeSpace and I'll echo previous posters by saying again: Thank you Axem.

Thanks so much! And not to deflect any appreciation, but really thank you for your own works that have helped shaped this evolution of JAD. Just the idea that FS campaigns could be more than just war stories and transactional battles. They could be about people, with either their own little battles they set themselves up for or just trying to find a place in a big giant uncaring universe. (Also stealing the name of a primary antagonist for my own primary antagonist with similar cold hearted plans and ideals).

I'm happy that worked out. I try not to front load JAD with references and in-jokes too much so I can actually have my own writing in there and let people unfamiliar with the source material have some fun too. But uh yeah, Eva does not have as happy or uplifting messages like JAD. Quite the opposite...

Spoiler:
STEELE was fun to write, especially coming up with over-complicated background projects, so more indeed would have been nice. Who knows what the future might hold though. Anna and Nick: Mom and Pop Bounty Hunters destroying STEELE's old unfinished projects? (Coming 2049!)

That was incredible.

It was like a love-letter and a send-off to both Freespace and it's community.

I loved every second of it.

The ending was great and surprisingly sentimental too

Infinity + 10 out of 10.  no mention of shivans on planes.

Can I also say how much I loved the part when
Spoiler:
Holly and Alex fly through Alpha 1's memories? (Alpha 1 Forever) I mean going through; FS1, FS2, Derelict, Blue Planet:AoA, one or two other mods I've evidently never played but absolutely should, and all the Beta Testers, was really fun; and the part before that with the classic FS2 mission setup. (Alpha 1 Returns / Surrender! Belisarius!)

I enjoyed that so flipping much!

Gonna be one last patch (or I hope it'll be last) in a week or so.

I saw a lot of people mention having difficulty in Alpha 1 Forever (or at least they had to restart so many times). I was thinking of doing the following...
Spoiler:
For difficulties Medium and below:
Third Beta Tester has a 10-20 second beam free delay
Eleventh Beta Tester won't attack until it's cores are destroyed (just like in the original mission)

I think that might allow the player a bit more time to score some easy wins and not get completely overwhelmed.

Unless you guys like that.

speaking of needing patches, um
Spoiler:
in the first campaign when you control both delta 1 and holly to take out (I think the Eleventh Beta Tester?) things are very borked- I have no weapons until I switch but the guns I get after switching have no effect on the color cores.

even stranger is that this does not stop you from playing the mission as the AI fighter can still damage the cores just fine, and does so very quickly.
you can only win the mission by not playing the mission.  (insert wargames joke)

I didn't do an all-though test tho, so you might want to take a look at it yourself first.

I also have a gripe about balance:
Spoiler:
In Cake Eater, the Seranerges are equipped with Flames of Justice for some reason and the Iapetus gets knocked to like 5% if you get hit by one of those. In my last playthrough I had to do like 4 retries because of that.

My hat is off to you, Axem.  This is impressive on so many levels.  The creativity, the technical skill, the mastery of so many areas of modding (scripting, model work, FREDding, art), and the sheer extravagance of JUST ADD EVERYTHING.  Outstanding work.

Yes, even if takes 9 years, I do get around to crossing things off my to-do list.
