there is a word I am thinking, it starts with a B and it's Bull****.
-
Totally sending that while laughing to my friend who lives in Chicago. Ahahahaha
-
Chicago: city of ****ty weather, terrible pizza, and bull**** taxes?
-
I noticed this on the comments
Easy fix
There is an easy fix for this. Netflix stops streaming to Chicago and presents a banner page that the currently elected officials have decided to tax the service and due to the efforts required to collect the tax they are no longer able to supply service. Include links to how to recall your elected officials. I'm sure Netflix is more popular than any politician.
And yes, it would be the best solution from Netflix.
-
wow, this really provides an even bigger incentive for piracy, doesn't it?
-
I hate taxes just as much as the next guy, but I feel like it's kind of necessary. Not the tax in Chicago, that's bull **** since Amazon. But taxing online businesses in general. With more people doing transactions online and with more growth expected in the future, it is inevitable for the internet to become a source of revenue for the government.
My issue is with this piece meal approach. Chicago, the city I was raised, keeps giving me no reason to ever want to stay. For such a "liberal" city, they're not progressive at all.

DONT TAX MY NETFLIX TAX HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS THOSE GUYS SUCK
edit: LEVY A PROPERTY TAX FOR ALL THE SPACE GOING TO HALF-FINISHED BOE CAMPAIGNS

I find it hilarious that in the United States, a country that practically screams how "free" and limited in government it is, a municipality can levy a tax on a global web-based business. Not even a state... a frickin city.
Taxation jurisdictions and powers in the US are apparently all kinds of ****ed up.

Yes, in short I find it baffling that Chicago decided to go solo and tax the internet while the federal government and the state sits idle and do nothing.
For the sake of transparency,i haven't lived in Chicago for five years so it doesn't affect me whatsoever. I'm willing to be taxed as long as it makes sense.

If you operate in the jurisdiction, that can be taxed by the jurisdiction.
-
Yes, but what then happens if the state and federal governments also decide to tax Netflix. Should you really have to pay 27% tax on one particular usage of the internet?
-
What happens when the local, state and federal government taxes something? Is there something taxed by all 3, and what happened to it?

Then all three get to. Gasoline or cigarette taxes frequently work exactly that way.

That's how your basic yearly income taxes work. Most people's paychecks get automatic deductions for municipal, state, and federal taxes, and after doing your taxes some combination of those could wind up owing you a refund.
-
One of the many reasons why I love living in Texas. Any moronical city council that tries to pull something like this would probably get overthrown by a mob of angry Texans armed to the teeth with automatic rifles*.
*In case the government is watching, this post is a form of humor that satirizes the common stereotype of Texans as gun nuts. C.F. Houston Chronicle: "TexMessage: Poll shows “trigger happy” Texas stereotype may be dead wrong". Neither the author of this post nor HLP endorse or condone the use of violence against government officials.

You pay the taxes and get nothing back, it's capitalism.
You pay the taxes and get healthcare and schools, it's socialism.
:p
-
Hey we do get schools...largely bad ones, but still!
-
I'll concede that we also have a ton of aircraft carriers.
-
Yeah but nobody needs those.
-
vpn time. I supply one.
