Title: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: karajorma on February 01, 2006, 01:36:23 pm
*Removed*

You can buy the game from Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2) now.

After you've done that simply run the FS2_Open Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html) to upgrade the game.

Stickied. The others have been destickied. PM me if you want them back up for any reason, though I don't see why you would.

Edit: Though it seems someone re-stuck them. Why? This'll only add to the confusion.

I never saw them unstick actually. Maybe the board glitched when you tried.

Just wanted to confirm this before I download the 670MB HotU file at 7kB/s...

Has this file been updated since the SCP (http://scp.indiegames.us/e107_plugins/custompages/scpinstallation.php) and Freespace Oracle (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/hotu.html) pages were written? They claim that the voice, music, hi-res info and some animations have been ripped in addition to the movies.

If these are still missing, I'm probably better off with the torrent (which, at 2.2GB, will probably download just as fast...).

I would get the torrent, but that's just me.

Yes it has. I've been rewriting the Oracle pages refering to the HotU version. All that is now missing is the cutscenes.

It's up to you whether you get the torrent or not. I find the HotU a cleaner version to start from but then I know exactly what I'm doing. For someone new to FS2 the torrent probably would be easier :)

Just a question: how legal is the download? Is FS2 totally free of rights nowadays with Interplay gone? Does anyone know this?

Its not exactly legal, but if you password protect it, and only let those u know download it, technicly that way IS legal if you read the terms and conditions. But to tell you the truth, as the underdogs say, its a bigger crime to not distribute this game. :)

Oh, and once I get the ISOs created, I may put the Freespace Battle Pack up, Freespace 2: Collosus, and Descent Freespace: Darkness Rising.

Ummm. We know about it. That's DW-Hunter's site. He doesn't want it linked to in such a public thread cause he can't spare the bandwidth of having everyone reccomend it as the first place to start :)

The 3CD download on that site is best suited for people who only want to play retail. As such there is no point in wasting his bandwidth for people who are immediately going to upgrade to FS2_Open when the HotU download has much more bandwidth and contains everything except the useless (for FS2_Open) mve cutscenes.

Can someone please remove the link in the above post?

Not a problem. :) It's just that there have been a few times when links that were supposed to be for the community have been posted to places like Something Awful which resulted in no one being able to use them cause large numbers of people attempted to download them all at the same time.

Can someone remove that link to DW's site? He specifically asked for it not to be posted on a thread like this cause there is too much traffic here and it should be a last resort rather than the first stop it would be if I added it to the list.

Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: karajorma on May 02, 2006, 08:49:38 am
It's not that it's warez. Simply that posting the link on HLP on a high profile thread like this means that his bandwidth gets used up in the first week of the month.
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: [DW]-Hunter on May 05, 2006, 01:11:45 pm
if i wanted it here i would have added the link a long time ago. but HLP gets too much traffic and I only have 720 GB of transfer a month. I get charged extra if i go over that quota. It is great I get traffic, yea yea i know i have the fastest download speed for freespace as well but too much traffic just means that my mirrors will be down 90% of the time. Lately I have been looking for good unlimited transfer servers with a price i can afford or just more bandwidth then Canaca (http://www.canaca.com) offers, but no luck yet. I think i might get another account on Canaca (http://www.canaca.com).

EDIT: Actually if i upgrade i will get 1.5TB transfer  still not enough  :drevil:

Dreamhost?  That's what I'm hosting the ISOs on, it maxes out my 6.0 meg cable connection, and it's cheapest plan comes with 1 TB transfer a month that increases like 8 gigs a week or something.  This is what MatthewPapa uses as well.

Hi there! complete noob here! Don't be to sure that people won't want the freeware versions. It might just give people a taste and once they've had a taste they'll be hungry for more. I assume these would be smaller downloads and for those with little bandwidth or only on dial-up they may prefer to try these first before commiting to downloading the full thing.  I myself have been looking for such a thing as I could only transfer files from work to home on a 256mb memory stick (LOL). Luckily a friend has broadband and a DVD burner and has obtained the disk images for me today (I shall be playing Freespace2 b4 the weekends out YAAAY!). Now I believe the original HoTU download was only 219mb (by ripping the guts out of it), that would have been ideal for me to start with to start building my SCP open version. However the newer version is around 6-700mb I believe, (by Kara, the link to their site at the top of this does not lead to their site, but their old one which is up for sale I think? anyway I get nothing but ads on that link??) I guess I should have bought a bigger memory stick eh? (No connection at home, lowly 600mhz pc with 311mb of memory and a s**tty 8mb graphics card till I can upgrade later (much later) this year)

P.S. Freespace 2 : Colossus,  This is the 10 level OEM version that came free with certain joysticks, correct? Well the first time I played Freespace2 was off a disk that came free with a second hand graphic accelerator card called the Righteous Orchid (3Dfx). I can't state that this was Colossus (didn't say so on the disk or any splash screen that I can remember) but seeing as this disk also had Carmageddon2 and Turok on it (maybe 1 or 2 more games as well but these I played) I can't see it being that big a file.

Just wanted to mention a few things and I've waffled on a bit. BTW I like the sports thread, Baseball in my opinion is nothing more than the child's game rounders with more complicated rules, so there you yanks LOL!

The original HotU rip was a real nightmare to use or upgrade. It lacked music, voice acting and the high res graphics (meaning that you could only play in 640x480). The second version was basically everything except the cutscenes. I could have made it smaller. In fact... *Digs out e-mail to Underdog*

Quote
I've prepared 3 different rips of the game so that I could offer you a choice as to how much of your precious bandwidth you'd have to give up.

Rip 1 is the whole game with cutscenes and is 1.5GB in size. Probably far too large for you but hey you never ask, you never get :)

Rip 2 is everything bar the cutscenes and is 685MB in size.

Rip 3 is the core game (only missing out the command briefing and techroom animations) and is 400MB in size.

Rip 2 was what Underdog put up. Rip 3 is basically Rip 2 with 4 VPs deleted. After that you start losing more important things like music, high-res graphics and the like.

BTW. HotU link updated. I wasn't aware that downloads were working on the new site so I hadn't updated seeing as how I though the issue was temporary.

Thanks.

That's the 3CD version, plus the official 1.2 patch (necessary). Using that would be a good basis for building Freespace SCP from it.
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: karajorma on May 14, 2006, 06:03:23 am
Yep. That is the 3CD version of FS2. FS1 isn't in that pack but it along with FS2 are included in ShivanSPS's pack (Although the version in his pack is the FS1 on FS2 port rather than the original stand alone game).

Just a quick question. Every time I try to un-RAR the game after downloading all of the various parts, I get that part1.RAR is corrupt. I have tried re-downloading part1 several times now and get the same thing each time. Any clues as to what might be causing this. Thanks.

Hello. I just downloaded Shivan's bittorrent package containing the media VPs and the full version of Freespace. While the media VPS seem to be working, as I am getting the effects and all, I can't change the resolution. It is extremely low,and no matter what resolution I set it to in the Launcher, it does not change in game. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but this is a very ugly resolution and I can't stand it. Another problem is with the sounds, there are no voices when there should be, just that stupid Microsoft Sam thing. Some help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the HLP. Keep all your fingers and toes inside the installation at all times! Exits are located near the "rear" of the station, however, due to the fact that the airlocks are broken... well let's just say we're not going anywhere . Flamethrowers are located beneath seats, but due to the moon conspiracy, GodTM, legalized flaming, ect. the napalm has been replaced with holy-water. Plasma rifles and shotguns are located in the weapons lockers, however, only the admins, :v:, and the hyperintellegent shade of blue have keys. At no point should you combine the symbols F S and 3, as you will be drowned in holy-water. If you should meet a Shivan in the airducts, give him your lunch and back away slowly. Strawmen may be constructed at any time in the gally.

Unfortunatly, due to speed problems cause by my FTP server, I am now enforcing a cap of 50 to 75 kbps.  My parents are complaining and the internet snails on every computer in the house so the cap will be enforced immediatly.

If its too slow for you then I suggest you go to swantz, as his is MUCH faster than mine.

Thanks, Zman.

try the FS Wiki (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_Freespace#Freespace_Zone). It has a great way to open .bin files.

Attached are .cue files for the 3 CDs of FS2 since some sites have the .bin files without the cues. Please note that the filename listed in the .cue MUST MATCH the filename of the .bin for it to work.

Example!

Code: [Select]
FILE "disc1.bin" BINARY
  TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
    INDEX 01 00:00:00

.cue files are simply .txt files with the extention changed. Use notepad to edit them, not wordpad or anything fancy-pants that might sneakily add extra formatting characters.

When trying to access the retail vp or freespace 2 CD images and patches link above it gives this error :

Error 501: You have entered an incorrect username or password.

    * Please verify that you are using the correct username. Your username should be in the form of an e-mail address and should be the e-mail address that you used when you initially signed up for your Xdrive account.
    * Please verify that you are entering your password correctly. Your password is case-sensitive. If you have forgotten your password and need a new one, please click here.

I tried both copying username/pw and typing them in with the same result

.bin files are supposed to have matching .cue files. Just because _some_ CD burning or image mounting apps don't need the .cue file is no excuse to not provide them with the .bin! Not providing the .bin causes noobquestions such as "My CD burner says it can't find the .cue file!" ;) As for  WHY anyone still makes CD images this way instead of the .iso format... bin/cue is olde, goes back to the earliest days of CD burning. The ISO created the .iso image format to make things easier. There's not one #@#%@#% thing superior about bin/cue!

I've uploaded all three retail CDs (in .iso format!) to www.mydatabus.com. I had to break the .zip file up into 9 parts, so if your Unzip program has a hard time with them, download 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org) and it should work fine.

FreeSpace 2 ISOs and Related files:
ISO Images Part 1 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.001")
ISO Images Part 2 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.002")
ISO Images Part 3 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.003")
ISO Images Part 4 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.004")
ISO Images Part 5 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.005")
ISO Images Part 6 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.006")
ISO Images Part 7 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.007")
ISO Images Part 8 (250 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.008")
ISO Images Part 9 (61.17 MB) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2.zip.009")
FreeSpace 2 Patch (patches to version 1.2) (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/fs21x-12.exe")
Patch that removes the squelching noise that plays when you talk in Multiplayer (http://"http://www.mydatabus.com/2z/tznvy.pbz/na.enwa/FS2VoicePatch.exe")

Wouldn't have worked anyway. What screws up multiplayer is the info in the .tbm files in the media VPs.  No matter where you added new .tbl files they wouldn't have prevented the .tbms from being read.

Kara, in your first post you say that the cutscenes don't work with FSOpen.  This confused me when I first attempted to download the game.  With 3.6.9 RC7.8, won't the .mve cutscenes work?  If you fix this it might help more newbies.

Title: ShivanSPS Freespace 2 SCP Installation Procedure
Post by: Huggybaby on December 09, 2006, 01:07:45 am
Here is my install guide with collection of links that work, as of 01/04/2007.
If you find any of the links have quit working please let me know.
If you know of additional links for these resources please let me know.

This guide is a bit unwieldy, I'll try to break it up into digestible pieces in the future.

First, you might want to look this whole FreeSpace thing over to see why we like it so much, and a good place to start is the FreeSpace Gamespot Link with Reviews (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/freespace2/index.html). You'll see some good looking screenshots there to be sure, but WMCoolmon's screenshots will really get you excited (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/index.php).
Finally you'll want to bookmark FreeSpace Source Code Project Headquarters (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php).

By now of course, you're itching to install FreeSpace Open, but there are two strategies:
1. Install everything all at once (my preference), or
2. Start with a Retail install, then Upgrade to FreeSpace Open

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Section 1, Installing Everything at Once (And Then Making a Backup)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

OPTION 1:
So far, the easiest and best way to get a properly working install is ShivanSPS' Freespace Open Full install. (THREAD) (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39499.msg803663.html#msg803663)

ShivanSPS Pros: Smaller, more efficient install. Many mods included. Includes details that make it work better than the other options IMO.
ShivanSPS Cons: It installs more than one program group. Not current with latest files. Includes the obsolete avi rather than mve or ogg files. (A version 2.0 is in the works though, so stay tuned.)

Before you get started:
You'll need about 4GB of free hard disk space. Make sure you have more than that.
It's OpenGL, not Direct3D, so quit trying.

The following seems complex because there are a lot of steps, just go one at a time, OK?

Note: The following is not intended to provide backward compatibility with the Retail version. I don't play that and haven't tested it. I only use the upgraded SCP version, so be advised.

A) First, get the 2GB ShivanSPS 1.5 pack from BitTorrent (http://www.mininova.org/tor/347634) or from ftp (ftp://213.48.38.123), (ftp username & password are both "hardlight").
Get "fs2scpfullpackv15c Shivansps.zip"

B) Second, get the 500MB FS2 SCP 1.8 update (7zipped) from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?2zfnwzymgkw), or  from Hunter's fs2downloads (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/FS2_SCP_full_pack%201.8%20Update.exe), or from ftp (ftp://213.48.38.123), (ftp username & password are both (hardlight").

C) Third, get the 40MB ShivanSPS 1.8 to 1.9c update pack from Hunter's fs2downloads (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/FS2_SCP_full_pack%201.8%20Update.exe) or from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?8mwjfu0o3mw) or from Filefront (http://files.filefront.com/fs2+scp+1+9c+updateexe/;5520456;;/fileinfo.html).

Now save these three files somewhere, or burn them to a DVD, so you won't have to download them again.

Then, run the 1.5 setup.exe from step A. It will "think" for a long time while it's preparing to extract so be patient, and make sure to accept the default install directory of C:\Games when prompted.

Next, run the 1.8 update exe from step B and accept the default directory of C:\Games\Freespace2.

Finally, run the 1.9c update exe from step C and accept the default directory.

In your C:\Games directory, find fsnodemap.gif and copy it to C:\Games\FreeSpace2.

Optional, but not necessary: There have been some changes since the installer was released, and some other files snuck in that don't need to be there, so let's do some housecleaning. This will all change in the near future with the ShivanSPS 2.0, but for now, you can carefully move or delete the following:

From C:\Games, OpenALwEAX installer.exe

From C:\Games\FreeSpace2, all the fred2_open_*.exe files and all the fs2_open_*.exe files, and Launcher.exe.
Leave the Fred2.exe and freespace2.exe files.

The flags.lch file and server.txt file.

Search your FreeSpace2 directories for all the Thumbs.db files and remove those.
Search your FreeSpace2 directories for all the Shivan files and remove those.
Search your FreeSpace2 directories for all the settings.ini files and remove those.
Search your FreeSpace2 directories for all the multi.log files and remove those.

From C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\movies, all the avi files.
From C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Fs1_port_3\data\Movies, all the avi files.

Do not delete the ending.avi file from C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Transcend\data\movies

You can also delete both the Freespace 2 SCP folders from your start menu.

There, all cleaned up.

LATEST EXE's:

D) Download the uber Windows Pack (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/3.6.9.rar) containing the latest build of the exe (3.6.9) and launcher (5.5a) (THREAD) (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.msg904548.html#msg904548).

Put the files in "C:\Games\FreeSpace2". Put a shortcut to the launcher on your desktop, or somewhere else convenient.

Your FreeSpace2 root folder will look like this:

CUTSCENES (MOVIES)
E) NEW! Running movies from a VP file!
Download Hunter's FS2 ogg format Cutscene Pack VP (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp). Put it in your "C:\Games\FreeSpace2" folder.
The FS1 ogg format Cutscene Pack VP (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS1OGGcutscenepack.vp) goes into your C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Fs1_port_3 folder.

Remove the old .avi's if you haven't already.

---OR---

Download the 20 Theora ogg format cutscenes to replace the old .avi's.
These new format movies are half the size of the originals with no discernable difference in quality.
avi vs. ogg vs. mve and why d3d is bad thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44370.msg906092.html#msg906092)

Put the 10 FS2 cutscenes (from Hunter) (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/FS2movies.rar) in your "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\movies" folder.

Put the 10 FS1 cutscenes (from Megaupload) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=T301ZT5I) in your "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Fs1_port_3\data\movies" folder.

Remove the old .avi's if you haven't already.

Original Format Movies
If you have a really old, slow computer, you may consider using the mve format cutscenes instead of the ogg's.
Download the mve format cutscenes from here (http://fsfiles.nukelol.com/), or get the fs2 mve files from filefront (http://files.filefront.com/fs2+movieszip/;5481311;;/fileinfo.html)  and fs1 mve files from filefront (http://files.filefront.com/fs1+movieszip/;5482460;;/fileinfo.html).

UPDATE OPEN AL:
F) Download the latest OpenAL installer (http://developer.creative.com/articles/article.asp?cat=31&top=38&aid=46), currently 1.9.9, 12/12/2006. Put it in a new folder in your FreeSpace2 directory for safekeeping, then run it.

UPDATE FSPORT from 3.03 to 3.04:
G) Download fsport-patch-3_0_3-3_0_4.zip from fs2downloads (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/fsport-patch-3_0_3-3_0_4.zip) and follow the directions contained in readme-patch.txt. When you're done you can remove the fsport3_0_3.vp file from your Fs1_port_3 directory. (THREAD) (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44127.msg901990.html#msg901990)

When you're done, it will look like this:

(If you aren't using the installer procedure, you can download fsport 3.0.4 complete
 from Hunter's fs2downloads, 470MB 7zipped down to 227MB (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/Fs1_port_3.7z)
)

ADVANCED EFFECT TWEAKS:
If you have a beefy machine and want all the eye candy (and lower frame rates), you can go to the C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps\mv_adveffects folder, and move the mv_adveffects.vp and mp-710_adveffects.vp files up one directory to C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps. When you're done it will look like this:

HIGH PERFORMANCE TWEAKS:
If you need more frames per second, skip the advanced effect tweaks (previous step). You can also go to C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps\data and replace the NaRR10_Nebulae.vp file with the Nebula pack from Wanderer (http://www.game-warden.com/starfox/Non_SF_related_stuff/Nebulae.rar), which contains compressed (and presumably faster) versions of the same files. If you put them both in the same directory, then the higher quality versions will take precedence, and it will look like this:

(If you want to know where all these mediavp files came from, they are the 3.6.8 zeta builds and you can download all of them from Hunter HERE (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/mediavps%20368zeta%20complete.7z). Using 7zip saved 30MB over rar. (THREAD) (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.msg812147.html#msg812147)

CONFIGURING FOR MULTI-PLAYER: THREAD (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43782.msg896204.html#msg896204) and THREAD (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44100.msg909126.html#msg909126)
Download this config file (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/fs2open_pxo.cfg). Put one copy in Freespace2\Data and another in Freespace2\Mediavps\Data.

Now, FINALLY, before you run the game for the first time, zip or rar your FreeSpace2 directory, then burn it to a DVD. It will compress a bit less than half. I'm told that if you don't compress it you will have issues later with read only attributes.

Now make copies and give them to your friends! Make sure they put it in their C:\Games folder.

OPTION 2:
[DW]-Hunter and Turey's new Online Retail Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43905.msg898110.html#msg898110).

SWANTZ's NUKELOL SITE HAS BOTH SETS
Get the FS1 and FS2 CD's HERE (http://www.nukelol.com/fs/)

FREESPACE 2 RETAIL
NORMAL (RETAIL) INSTALL FROM FreeSpace 2 CD's:
Pros: Provides the best fallback for a clean install.
Cons: LOTS of downloading needed! Updating is tricky. You need CD's and need the software and knowledge to burn iso or bin/cue files.

You can use this very well seeded torrent to get your FreeSpace 2 CD's
Download the CD's in Bin/Cue format using BitTorrent (http://www.mininova.org/tor/403521).

---OR---

Direct download
FreeSpace 2 iso version, #1 of 3, 607.4 MB from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?8zio2innnmt)
FreeSpace 2 7zipped iso version, #2 of 3, 455.84 MB from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?9zrttwtyjvm)
FreeSpace 2 7zipped iso version, #3 of 3, 459.67 MB from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?emtdm2m2t02)

---OR---

Direct download
Download the iso's from Turey's MyDataBus account in 250 MB multi-part 7zip fomat (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38195.msg885225.html#msg885225).

Install the game, then run the game's updater to update.
Otherwise download and install the Freespace 2 v. 1.2 Patch (http://www.freespace2.com/downloads.cfm).

FREESPACE 1 RETAIL
Note: FreeSpace 1 has been majorly upgraded. You will get the new version as part of the FreeSpace 2 SCP downloads above. If you insist on installing the old musty FreeSpace 1 and the Silent Threat expansion, they come on 3 CD's.
FreeSpace 1 7zipped iso UK version, #1 of 3, 317.43 MB from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?5mow2nd5t2o)
FreeSpace 1 7zipped iso UK version, #2 of 3, 310.65 MB from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?2n00zkwooyy)
FreeSpace 1 7zipped iso UK version, #3 of 3 (Silent Threat), 283.52 MB from MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?2nrgnonaonl)

If you patch these you'll need the United Kingdom version. The in game patcher goes to a dead link.
Get the 1.06 UK patch and optional EAX UK patch for FS1 here (http://www.volition-inc.com/fs/downloads.cfm).

Glad I could help karajorma.

[DW]-Hunter, the x52 looks fantastic of course.
http://www.saitekusa.com/USA/prod/x52.htm

The page doesn't mention, is it force feedback? Also, how would it work for left handers (a big concern of mine)?
I'm guessing the throttle is right hand only.

Finally, I can't find a link for the keyboard reference chart that came with versions of FS2. Does anybody have one?
I have the chart that came with FS1, it folds into a three sided "table tent" and if I can find a scanner I'll upload it.

I redid my links page. I properly formatted the links with text and repositioned a small chunk to make a more logical progression. I think it's easier to read now and less dry to be sure.

I've avoided much explanation because I don't want it to turn into a full blown install guide, thought that's the essential format.

The main ingredient is that every link works, a big time saver to new users. There is way too much info out there that's wrong. Almost all the web pages relating to SCP I can find are full of dead links years old and instruct in the "old" installation procedures which totally screw up the new ones. I don't know why those guys keep paying for hosting.  :hopping:

Hmm, I guess I did add some, four I think.

I found the keyboard reference, bundled that with the guide and uploaded that to a new link. I got them from replacementdocs.com. I added the µTorrent link. And I added two computer speech links (hint hint).

Oh, and I just found a link that I found last night and lost today but I bookmarked it for some smart reason so I could find it again. HA HA
It's wmcoolmon's screenshots, an awesome sight you can't just stumble across on google.

---THAT'S IT FOR CD's.---

If you don't have CD's, use the internet strategy.

The online strategy for establishing a Retail install is
[DW]-Hunter and Turey's new Online Retail Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43905.msg898110.html#msg898110).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOW THAT YOU'VE INSTALLED A RETAIL BASE, YOU CAN UPGRADE YOUR INSTALL TO FSOPEN.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new FreeSpace Open Installer upgrades the normal installations (above) to the enhanced Source Code Project versions,
and you can get it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html). The installer can fetch over 800 MB!

You can also get all the mediavps files together from fileho (http://fileho.com/download/ad75505775/mediavps.rar.html).

My retail Installer gives you the open Installer link, you dont need to download anything else. Plus, my installer installs 1.2 not oem 1.0. My installer gives you everything you need, its the best way to get it, because there is no confusion involved, just double click the installer and check off the options and you dont have to do anything else! No annoying file extracting to do like most FSO installers, it does everything for you! It even adds the start menu links! So that mediavps link you got under my installer, is pointless lol. However, I still suggest downloading the open installer as well for future updates.

For mods, everyone will be able to upload their own mods and campaigns to my mod database (http://www.fs2downloads.com) soon, It currently already has some content, and I have been slowly updating it, If you guys want your Mod or Campaign on there find a effective way to contact me via instant messenger or if you want a slower way, contact me through email (i check it every few days).

<edit> Fixed (hopefully). I may add a bit more verbiage after I've done some testing.
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: [DW]-Hunter on December 20, 2006, 07:06:46 am
oh i forgot to mention as well, my installer also includes cutscenes, and you dont HAVE to install any other files then the ones you choose, so if all you want is cutscenes from my installer, you can do it! :D

Also, with the no-cd crack included into my installer, it does not contain the no-cd flaws like the other crack used in the HoTU version.
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: Huggybaby on December 20, 2006, 09:20:21 am
When exactly is the no CD crack necessary? Is it needed if I don't use the HotU version?

Will your installer ever check for the pre-existance of files or will it always download over them?
I guess you can tell I think an updater is almost as important as an installer.

Thanks for making FSOpen easier to use.

Huggybaby

Question regarding the updater:

If I check the mods I want to update will it automatically redownload everything regardless if it needs an update or not or does it check to see if I already have the latest version and abort?
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: Huggybaby on December 27, 2006, 11:47:57 am
For me, it doesn't check existing files properly which leads to a lot of unnecessary downloading. That is, if you haven't used the updater before it won't recognize the files that exist. It only reads the contents of some text files it creates itself to see if has been run before, which is an odd solution.

What is your experience?

The problem is that it's a lot of work to make sure each individual file is up to date. The version numbers are a way of bridging the gap between no updater at all and an updater that checks the CRCs of each file (which is a PITA, as the filenames won't stay the same between versions)

I know that the version number method seems a little odd, but it was the best I could do on short notice. The updater really was just a quick feature addition, as I wasn't planning to have one until people started asking for it. Maybe once I get all the other bugs ironed out, I'll be able to look into better ways of implementing the updater.

Post by: Huggybaby on December 28, 2006, 12:50:12 am
Very good, thank you.

What do you think of using rsync ? It could work as an updater as well as an installer. It only sends the piece(s) of any file that has changed, not the whole file, and compresses the piece(s) too. It seemed like a really neat, extremely fast solution but was beyond me to implement. Although I did manage to move files between directories on my hard drive, I gave up on understanding all the switches. It seems to be in common use amongst Linux users and works on Windows too. Hunter says he'll host the server side part if it's feasible, and keep the server file up to date.

A friend of mine said that if I could figure out all the command lines then a GUI would be easy (for him). I'm just curious if it could work, there may be some reason that it wouldn't.

Man, the installer situation has been changing so rapidly lately...

There is Hunter's online installer, (which ends up downloading Turey's installer after all), and then there's Turey's Java installer, which might download as a zip file, but is really a jar file, and needs another download to work.

So, can you be extremely specific about which one doesn't work?

Ok, I'm a bit lost and frustrated because I haven't been able to find a working link to the 1.5-1.8 patch. First was that oxyshare link that doesn't work, then the FTP that doesn't work any longer either. So where the heck is it? I've been waiting to start playing FS1 forever, but it gives me errors on the wrong ships, so I'm figuring the patch fixes it, as I already have the 1.9 one

Thanks for reporting the bad ftp. It was working last week.

And dangit! I had taken half a day to upload that to fileho, but they're not working either.  :hopping:
I knew that service was too good to be true!

I'll have it up somewhere else sometime time tonight then, please be patient.

<edit>
OK, uploading.
Also, I added links to both new Theora cutscene packages to the post in my sig.

OK, I'm having a terrible time completing that 512 MB upload so it will be a while longer. I've wasted 8 hours across two hosters and strained my back, but I'm still trying...

<edit> I uploaded all night, got up this morning, no link. No answer from tech support on the other site that failed. OK, now I'm ftp'ing to Hunter. After that, I'm splitting the file into two smaller chunks then I'll try again. I have a feeling that even though a site says it will take a 1GB file, they really don't like them over 500MB. I'm beginning to see why Rapidshare is still in business. They may be inconvenient, but you can at least complete an upload and get a link.

OK, Hunter graciously accepted the file. Please tell him thank you, it's costing him money you know.

Get the ShivanSPS 1.5 to 1.8 update pack from Hunter's fs2downloads (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/FS2_SCP_full_pack%201.8%20Update.exe).

Links updated. SEE MY SIGNATURE.

<edit> changed the PIA filefront fsport 3.04 update link, thanks Hunter and your kickass hosting.
My links post is now a rather comprehensive install guide, using ShivanSPS' install as a foundation. I've updated my signature to reflect that. Still some more pics to add, but it's coming along nicely. I just hope it's not too hard to follow.

I need and welcome feedback from new users, oldbies won't be using it, and I've stared at it so long I've lost some perspective.

I just wanted to thank everyone SO much, especially huggybaby and hunter, for making this so convenient.  I bought the retail CDs off Ebay (for 20 bucks!!) like 6 months ago and saw the Open Source project on Wikipedia.  Not seeing Hardlight listed anywhere on the wiki (it is now though) I ended up Googling stuff and wound up with like 5 conflicting installations and about 40 dead sites.  It took literally 3 months to even get it to launch.  And then after that, I had my VP files in the wrong directory, so I played through the whole thing with retail FS2 graphics.

This game is really amazing and so is what you guys have done with it.  As soon as I get the directory burned to a DVD I plan on distributing a bunch of copies.  Just a few things, I looked everywhere for a donate page (to help defray hosting costs, or a simple token of appreciation) and couldn't find one anywhere.  Is there one?  Also, if I'm pointing friends towards here to download the game, should I have them use torrents or just download off the sites?  I'm not sure which is cheaper for you all.

Anyways, thanks again, and GREAT work on this game.

if you click on the little "Donate" Tab on the top of the page, there's a paypal link to help with server costs. It's kind of hidden, so I'm not surprised you missed it.

Humm.. Where to start, I got 3.6.9 final, 5.5 launcher and All of the Extra goodies form Huggy's download guide .And got them to work [buildt modularly]but the files; some are incomplete\corrupted[??].I'm getting missing Model errors From FOW Chap 1, A corrupted FS Port Tango.VP in the rar and in my fav mod Inferno R1,I can't shoot anything with Primaries. Ive reloaded most all of the files from the individual sites But am missing the R1 scp Patch and the FoW ship pack and I can't seem to find them. Now I know someone is going to say Use this or that Installer but I'm using a different computer for the game and I burn most of the gaming materials a install later. Also I don't want to wait for a 10 hour download only to wait another 36 hours to load FS port. If some one could put up a link or Post the R1 scp patch[and explain why I can't shoot nobody]and the ship pack for FoW.That would be great and the funny part is those are the only ones I've tried so far..So great work on the Guide it Helped me build my SCP Freespace from Reatail V1.2 to Open but the Extra links Need to be checked.

All the rar's I made used a recovery record, to help in case of corruption during download. If the file was bad I would have heard about it by now, so your download got corrupted, not my upload.

My guide was made to be used with Shivan's installer. The only problems reported so far have been with one other guy, who also tried to put together an install "modularly".

As I explained to him, my instructions don't include anything about converting from retail, though there is a guide for doing that here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/installingfs2_open.html#upgrade).

The InfernoR1 download is already patched, but you can find the separate files at their site (http://inferno.hard-light.net/).

There may be problems with Flames of War, I only uploaded it so see their section for help (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43835.msg896794.html#msg896794), I can't support it because I'm neither qualified nor responsible.

It sounds to me like you're missing some critical files you don't know about. Have you compared your directories to the screen shots in my guide? If you had you could tell me exactly what you're missing.

Sorry you wasted so much time already. My guide will be massively simplified in the next day or so, which will allow me to eliminate a lot of instructions. Shivan's downloads won't be required at that time either. But I can't make the downloads any smaller unfortunately, they're already the most highly compressed available.

To Huggy, O.K thanks ,I'll double check my files.Don't get me wrong It does work but with all the different posts about installers, downloads, patches and different versions it gets dam aggghhh.which one do Iget, use blah blah. Will this version of this work with this version of that and so on.And if that doesn't work I'll just clean sweep a start again,Hell I've had the game since early 2000>i am an addict.Need something to do while I recoperate any way. Checked the files on the other computer and compaired them don't seem to be missing anything had to get rid of 3extra tango VP in data[the main one] Let's see..Again thanks for the help, the guide is good and helpful download size big=more stuff.. peace

Cool. I'm trying to upload something simpler, stay tuned.

I feel your pain. I can't get a straight answer to many of these questions we share. If even the veterans can't agree on where to put certain files, how the heck can us noobs hope to figure it out? We'll just keep plugging along, maybe to find consensus one day.

<edit> Using the ShivanSPS/Turey install as a base, I've removed every unneeded file and directory, added a couple of nifty tweaks, wrote a cool readme, and 7zipped it to fit on two CD's.

Then I spent a couple of days uploading. Then I downloaded to make sure they weren't corrupt.

Much time spent, MUCH time.

Only one problem...it takes 45 minutes to decompress, and this isn't a slow machine! OUCH!

OK, maybe I should have used RAR. Back to the drawing board.

The links are uploaded, if you don't mind waiting an eternity for decompressing, I'll post them.

<edit> OK, the rar's are 83 MB larger, but decompress in 5 minutes. So, does it take 40 minutes to download 83MB?

<edit> It's done.

Ok, I am confused. I used all the non-CD links, and none of them work! The top one  installs it, but it says it can't find files. The other ones are something my laptop can't ever recognise. Is there an actual link to get a full version, without the CDs that actually works? I had this game, loved it, scratched the CDs, and wanna play it again!

I suspect the problem is simply that he doesn't know how to work with either torrent or rar files (either one or both) and thus doesn't know what to do with the files he ends up with.

You can get Winrar from www.rarlabs.com to take care of rar files. BitTorrent is pretty easy to use too. Google UTorrent for a client that can work with a .torrent file.

Well, i must say i'm impressed. Every single link in this thread, except for the HoTU link, is broken. Along with every single other link ever posted on the internet concerning a download of FS2, except for a certain ISO download that is about as slow as dialup on a bad day. Heck, even the FS2_open package torrent has no seeds! I'd download FS2 from HoTU except that it starts at 88 kb/s, falls down to 12 kb/s, and proceeds to shrink into infinitly smaller increments until it approaches 1 kb/s and the download's projected time is at around 99 hours.

Is there any feasible way for me to acquire FS2? And could someone please, please, PLEASE update this thread?

You usually won't build up many seeders unless you belong to a site that enforces ratios, or it's a very popular file. In this case too, there are several different ways to get the file directly which takes pressure off the torrent.

Your traffic does seem low right now (2 seeders and 1 leecher).

Probably the way you named the file (FreeSpaceSCPDVD with no spaces) is making it hard to find when people search on "FreeSpace".  :(

You can play the singler player campaign in co-op mode over multi, whether it be a LAN game or over the net! As for converting the demo into the full game, hmmmm! Let me think about that for a while in the meantime...........

Unfortunately the files in Colossus appear to be different from those in FS2. However I suspect that if you can get the launcher not to download Sparky_fs2 the game would still work (saving you from downloading a 250MB file). The other files seem to show a quite large difference from the FS2 Retail versions so I have no idea what would happen if you replaced them the Colossus versions.

However if you want to play FS1 first I suspect that you could get FS1 port to run perfectly on Colossus. So you can probably download that now and upgrade FS2 at your leisure.

Well then......where can i get the launcher from then? ....i find that the FS2 colossus OEM can't be updated, i mean its disabled......if you can find a way to enable it i guess that demo can be auto updated.....And 1 more thing, i also downloaded the FS2 SCP online installer, but it looks different from the last time when i downloaded the game.......my point exactly is that i did download the FS2 SCP but i deleted it by accident and i emptied the recycle bin then i suspected that FS2 was deleted.....anyway the FS2 SCP is different like.....the audio and video stops for a few seconds and then resume.......mostly the audio is the problem.........its find until i reach the mission where we need to kill the Behemoth.etc.........when i reach that mission the audio was stuck half way and my computer got hanged..........when i restart my computer, both audio and video stops for a few seconds rapidly......... And i also see to many stars this time even if i change the video quality to low, medium, high, very high.........try to do something about that too please......   :(

Nix is working on a project to replace all the standard FS2 audio with the original high quality versions he obtained from the :v: composer. That means you can find high quality versions of some of the FS1 and FS2 tunes here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43106.0.html). He had a high quality version of that particular tune on his website but it seems to be gone now so here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/Misc-Downloads/FS2_Brief_04.ogg)'s the high quality .ogg version he uploaded.

Had you asked for any other tune I'd have directed you to my FAQ but that one's my favourite too. :D

As long as you're using the Open Launcher, then just select the mod you want from the MOD tab... eg, for fsport, (FS1) select fsport, for JAD3, select JAD, for FS2 with updated graphics, select mediavps....

The last mission was a red alert and 3.6.9 is currently not working with red alerts. This problem will be fixed soon in 3.6.10.

Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links

If you used Turey's Installer just copy your FS2 directory to a DVD or make a data disc in Nero or something. It is too big (the smallest download is 539 Mbs, just barely small enough) to fit on a CD. You could use the HotU version, but that sucks. My suggestion would be to download Hip63's or ShivanSpS's DVD off of BitTorrent. (as they are packaged as DVDs?)

I recall there being a mod out there to allow you to play as Shivs. All it did was to edit the ships.tbl and weapons.tbl to make the Shivan fighters/bombers/weapons player-usable. If you know how to edit tables, you could do this yourself.

  • HotU (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4150) - Unlike the 3 CD downloads this version doesn't contain the in-game cutscenes. It also uses a no-CD patched version of the Freespace 2 exe. Installation is easy....
Just wondering whether anyone knows of a place to get a similar download file, the 700MEG, rather than the 3 CD download has "Home of the Underdogs" doesn't seem to be working at the moment, or at least not my PC :doubt:

Also, I've got FS2: Collosus, free with my joy-stick, so is there a way/file I can just extend the demo?

Use Turey's Installer, and just get the Retail Stuff.  But getting the .exe files for SCP wouldn't hurt, even if your computer's old... but if you don't want them, you don't have to.

Don't worry about the actual file name, just tell the Installer to get what you need.  It will not list the actual file names, it will say something like, "FreeSpace2 Retail Music files" instead of "warble_fs2.vp".

That was right.  Ok, basically a table file resides inside one of your .vp files, usually.  Now, if you're going to change that table, then you have to create a new table file outside the .vp... darn this is going to be confusing for you.  I think I'm going to go to sleep & try to explain this when I get up.  In the slim chance that you'll be able to understand a brief explanation, here goes:

A table file contains settings for a particular set of objects in FS.  (example, ships or weapons).  ships.tbl would contain a ship's max speed, max AB speed, accelleration, vertical / horizontal slide speed (if any), etc, etc.  These table files are normally stored inside a .vp file, and while they are there they cannot be changed.  But, you can extract a copy of them to the correct directory (inside the vp files, there are directories.)  The correct on in this case is ships.tbl.  Now, these tables also have settings for if a player is allowed to fly the ship.  So, if you extract a copy of ships.tbl to \FreeSpace2\data\ship.tbl & change the values, you can play as the Shivans   (Well, at least fly their ships.)

I like my marquee. Why can't I count welcomed newbs?

Cause basically you might as well have written "I'm seriously behind the times when it comes to how HLP works" in your sig.

The point where welcoming newbies stopped being something you did cause you honestly wanted to be nice and welcoming but instead became something you felt the need to count and display, is the point at which you should have stopped doing it.

I'm not singling you out cause there were quite a lot of people who were doing it at the time. However a while back the more senior members decided that in addition to being annoying it was actually not the sort of image of the board we wanted to give new members. So the welcome speech was dropped (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,47133.0.html) and beaming went back to actually being welcoming rather than some sort of contest.

Fact is that you should remove it anyway just for being a marquee (And I'm going to start taking the kind of zero tolerance attitude to those that we have been taking to image sigs for much the same reason) but to appear to be still keeping count of a contest no one else is interested in competing in anyway is pretty uncool. :)

Oh, what'd be a good program for creating ISOs?  Preferably something free or cheap.

Oh, and once I get the ISOs created, I may put the Freespace Battle Pack up, Freespace 2: Collosus, and Descent Freespace: Darkness Rising.

Swantz!!
How are you getting on with creating the ISO's? I would really like the FS2:Collosus & FS:Darkness Rising OEM versons.
I am collecting all versions and only need these two to complete my set. (I have purchased all the other versions on ebay for $10, amazing price.)  :p
If it is too much hassle then perhaps somebody can post up the campaigns insted.

You should makes your own mod folder, create a Data/Tables folder in it and put it there. Then when you run the game use the launcher to select that folder as your chosen mod. If you want the media VPs active use -mod YourModName, mediavps

You are running the FreeSpace.exe, not the FS.exe, right?  You need to set compatibility mode to Windows '95 IIRC.  Where did you install it to?  Don't use Desktop or My Documents or anything under \Documents and Settings\  Does it give an error message?

It could also be a download problem from them, I have FS1 on manufactures disk and I never had any problems at all installing FS on win 95,98,98se,2000, multiple errors, nt, or vista. In fact FS1 runs better on my vista than it ever did on 95.

If you fond out you need it again let me know I can rar FS1 and up it somewhere and link you to it.

Hmm... if that doesn't work, try using the MD5 troubleshooting procedure in my signature, except use it for FS1... wolfen, you would just "Add all recursively" your freespace dir, then send him the md5, which he would open with MD5Summer.. if you can understand what I mean.  Let me know if not.  That way, he'd know which files were screwed up, and you could send only those file(s).

Right-click on the file, hit properties, click "compatibility mode" tab, select "windows 95", hit apply or OK.. that .exe will now use compatibility mode whenever it is launched, and, all .exes that it launches will inherit its compatibility mode.

The only good files you have in that install are:

Fred.hlp
patchw32.dll
refcard.rtf
Data\std.cfg
Data\freespace.vp
Data\pxohelp.txt

The rest are missing / bad.  How fast can you download?  And, you can has torrents?

Thanks .

Can you first upload just freespace.exe to see if then will work .

If not i will post here again , if you have time to upload whole FS1 somewhere .

I really want to try FreeSpace 1 and Silent Threat because i didn't play them but i'm big fan of FreeSpace 2 .

FS1 or FS2 I have both on the hard drive.

They're both retail so you'll need Turey's installer to get the goodies we play now days :)

Umm... hmm, halabit, try using Turey's Installer (see my sig for a walkthrough)... that will download FS2, FS2Open, and FSPort (which is a FS1 > FS2/Open port).  I thought you actually wanted retail for some reason... if you just want to play it, then use Turey's Installer, and make sure you check FSPort (and the mediavps if you can help it).

Well, I'm on a low bandwidth connection and I really need to be able to stop and resume downloads. There's no way I can get all the files at a stretch. Can this installer resume downloads? If so, how? I stopped after 400 mb and I'm not sure how to get it to resume.

If you install FSO with the Installer to the same directory where you were downloading before, it will take note of the files you already have and not download them again.
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: windrider on November 10, 2007, 12:01:18 pm
The installer does not automatically resume if the connection is cut off. That makes it even harder for me.

Yes I have. The installer works fine. Just that my connection sucks and so I have to manually restart the installer and reselect options every time the connection drops. This should be fixed when I get a new modem on Monday.

Look in my signature, and in the same line as "Walkthrough", get hip63's FSSCP DVD via torrent... torrents can resume with ease, and are nearly impossible to corrupt.  You might want to make sure you're connectible, though.  (Is that how you spell connectable?  I think the spellchecker has a mistake.. w/e.)

If you need help setting up your ports, get uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com) and look up "port forwarding" in the PortForward (http://www.portforward.com) guides.

Wiktionary states that both forms are acceptable. But dunno. The i just doesn't feel right in that word.

The word itself sounds odd. We could just say 'can connect' instead.

The torrent's running at good speed (for my connection, that is). I should be done in another 38 hours. No, I'm not kidding.

I would like to thank the seeders.
Title: Re: Freespace 2 Download Links
Post by: jr2 on November 12, 2007, 01:20:11 am
To achieve a true maximum speed (stop the torrent, do this, and then resume it), go to http://www.speedtest.net and see what your max connection speed is... find the max upload speed, divide it by 8, then take the result, and multiply it by 0.9.  Set that result as your maximum upload (seeding) speed in uTorrent (right-click on the upload speed indicator, in the lower right of the main window).

Torrents can only operate at max speed while uploading, usually the optimum is 80-90% of max upload speed = you get max download speed.  The calculations above do this for you.  Now, if this slows you down (after a few minutes), then, replace 0.9 with 0.8... try that, if not, drop to 0.7, etc, etc.

OK?  :D

After you're done, then set the max upload speed to suit your browsing needs, and leave it seeding (you can stop, then resume later if you have to) until you have at least a 1.000 ratio... any higher, and you are helping the torrent out!  ;)

Oh, and, when you're done installing, rename the \FreeSpace\port_v3 to \FreeSpace\fsport ... or some stuff won't work.  ;)

And Descent: Destination Saturn and Descent II: Destination Quartzon

All they basically do is let you a bit further along than the demo does, because you bought it with some piece of hardware, but they don't give you the full version, because you didn't pay enough for your hardware.  Or something.

Use Turey's FSO Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html). It'll get FSO for you in the simplest possible way, and with FSPort you can play the FS1 campaign and Silent Threat with the FSO engine. No need for CDs whatsoever.

I don't want to seem like I'm complaining or mad or anything; I'm just curious if someone bought up the rights to FS2 or something.  Didn't the FSO installer used to work without having the original installed?

Thanks for the necro 'n all.

Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/) now provides classic games, including FS, Silent Threat and FS2, at most reasonable prices. Legally. That's why Turey decided to remove the retail files from the Installer.

Big thumbs up to GOG for providing such a great service at a more than fair price!  However, I guess I'm a bit confused; I thought the retail files were legal to distribute since '02.  Or was there an issue with models/artwork?

The source code of the game engine was released in '02. Everything else is still proprietary.

Hell, I won't. I don't have that kind of money! Well, good thing I got it before the purge, or I'd never have picked it up.

Interplay may not have ever funded a sequel, and their advertising for FS2 may have been questionable, but let's not forget that they were responsible for the games' existence in the first place.  And from a legal sense, they're its owners, so they're the ones you'd have to support to obtain a legit copy.
