Title: Advise me- new gaming laptop
Post by: Colonol Dekker on August 24, 2020, 11:28:40 am
So Ive got an Alienware M17x R4 already but tits starting to show its age.  (2012 who can blame it).

So I'm window shopping a replacement and wondering what to go for, it just boils down to the processor and gpu obvs.

Intel or Ryzen / AMD vs Nvidia.

I've been out of the game too long what with marriage and kids and being a national bomb god so my bleeding edge knowledge is less than ideal.

Youre all much more up to speed.   I can dump a moderate anount into this so please bombard me with prebuilt choice.   Retailers like curry's or online are welcome.   I'm quite fond of my Alienwares HDMI in, as I work everywhere it's good to have something I can throw my consoles into as well, but I can't find too many with the hdmi in option.

What do you consider "a moderate amount"?

Anyway, here's what I would consider decent choices:
* Dell XPS 15. Can be configured with an i7-9750H, 16 gigs of RAM and a 1650
* ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14. Comes with a Ryzen 7 8-core, 16 gigs of RAM and a 1650Ti for about 1.5k€

1.5k is a fair amount for a laptop I reckon.   More for a 17 inch screen with an hdmi in.

So no major leanings regarding the processor brand camp?  I've heard ryzen is the one to go for but I'm not a slave to gossip.

So a 1650 is the best bang for buck at the moment?  My 660m lasted a good few years so hoping the same will be the case for whatever I go for.

A 1650/1650Ti/1660 is very good value for money.

That said, you might be able to get something off of the ASUS ROG Strix G17 line for that money.

HDMI in, sadly, is something you will not find on these; your best bet would be something like a usb capture card.

Edit-

This is the nearest / most convenient retailer (would rather a national chain so I have recourse and access from wherever I may be deployed). Fair few options..

TUF strikes me as "domestic" tough rather than "tough" tough.

"TUF" is ASUS' mid-tier gaming brand (the top-end stuff gets the ROG branding). The TUF machine they have in their lineup is solid, but 8 Gigs of RAM is getting a bit small these days; from the lineup they're offering, I'd go with one of these machines:

They have a Zephyrus in there, yes, but it's one of the last-gen ones; the really good mobile Ryzens (i.e. Ryzen 4000 series) don't seem to be represented there.

I think it's going to end up being that rog strix.  Acer as a brand looks good on paper but I've had a few of their products over the years and they just leave me unsatisfied.   If I was going to push for the MSI spec I'd go all out on the Alienware unlocked.....and my wife would notice that dent in the bank balance.

Vielen Dank Herr Der E  :yes:

I can't see Any ryzen here even using filters.😭

Sooo I'm still torn,  willing to cast a wider net for the best bang for buck.

So I'm asking you all for your take on what's the best I can get for around (that's above and under) 1500 quid,  from pretty much anywhere.

kinda hard to search for stuff from germanland, but here's the basic specs you should be looking out for:
* CPU: Either a Ryzen 4000-series or Intel i7 10th gen
* RAM: 16 GB
* GPU: Nvidia 1650Ti, 1660 or 20-series
* Storage: 512GB - 1 TB NVMe
* Display: high refresh rate 1080p or 1440p

Within your budget, you should be able to find a model that fits those basic specs; if there is a choice, I would prioritize the GPU.

RTX 20+ is very achievable,  I'm very much looking at ROG but can't work out any difference between strix and scar apart from a novelty NFC tag.

Wife has used her old Ministry of Defence police deduction to work out my plan to spend my own money on me... May have pushed it back a week or two 😂.  I just need to be clandestine.

Well I've ordered the ROG Strix G712LU.   Collecting tomorrow,  and then hiding it from my loving wife for as long as I can 😂😂

I have a ROG laptop, it is only an i5 processor, with 8gb memeory, a 4gb dedicated 1050ti GPU.

Since the last 2 updates of COD Warzone, this has become unplayable on this laptop.

Anything above this should work.

Of course I only had £700-800 to spend at the time of buying, just over a year ago.

Thankfully my desktop PC is still Warzone playable :)

Hoping it does the job.   It'll be in my hands this time tomorrow...   And I'll be having the "I've been made to wait a week, give me free stuff" conversation with the guys at the shop.
