Title: Translations
Post by: odo2063 on May 13, 2009, 12:32:03 pm
Maybe we should have a look on this : https://translations.launchpad.net/  for our diffrent translations.

just my 2/100 €.

When it comes to translation efforts, I'll say what I've said before. The first, most important step of a translation project doesn't require the Diaspora team at all. It's something the fans can do all on their own. Get strings.tbl converted into your language of choice and then I'll know you're serious.

I've said that several times in the past and I've yet to see anyone do more than a half-hearted attempt. You can find the last attempt here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56811.0.html).

its just a suggestion.

sorry for my incontinence, eh, inconvenience.

It's a good suggestion actually. I just don't think the team need to be involved. The file that is needed is freely available so there's no reason people can't get started now.

AFAIK, localizations fulfilled by teams of 3 per language tend to move forward quite well

What do you want to translate ? Into which language ?

Watch out folks, there's no unicode support in the engine. Which means you're limited to a-zA-Z (IIRC).

It's so funny to read that after yesterday's translation spree...

Seriously, no one said that the miniproject died. IM programs and PMs are enough to manage its progress - there's no need to use the forums.

From 2 to 3 bilingual translators per target language should be the way, IMO.

As I've said, that's all I've seen. If there is stuff going on under the surface that's great but if no one bothers to post the slightest bit of evidence how is anyone to know that?

I agree.

Me and 134th have been proposing alternate versions of each other's edits in a reasonable way. If I was the only translator, the result wouldn't be as good as it is now. Translating strings isn't enough - the translation also needs to transmit the original FreeSpace feeling (not to mention the changes led by space constraints, Italian words are usually longer than their English counterparts). :)

As I've said, that's all I've seen. If there is stuff going on under the surface that's great but if no one bothers to post the slightest bit of evidence how is anyone to know that?

I don't have to show anything to anyone. You don't see me posting updates/pictures on any of the following: Celebration of FreeSpace thread, Inferno board and NTV board. I do have stuff to show, but I'm not a big fan of pre-release mystery threads, teasers, trailers, etc. etc. I don't know if my modus operandi is correct (I have doubts), but that's how I behave.

That's why you won't see anything until me and 134th are done.  :)

Fair enough but until someone proves that they have done something I'm going on the assumption that no one has. And I'm most certainly not basing any decisions on what translations we'll have based on that kind of non-information.

Nice work Richard. I'll pass this on the the various other mods who can also use it (Diaspora isn't the only group who can benefit from this translation) but we'll definitely be using it.

I'll contact you when we have a final script for translation into French.

When Diaspora will be release I'll be more able to see if there are mistakes (or imperfections).
I'm sure this translation can be better.

Don't hesitate if you need other help.

Wait... How did Komet do the Japanese Port, then?

...And, off-topic, how's the integration of the Japanese Port's features into FSO going?
Title: Re: Translations
Post by: The E on January 05, 2010, 04:00:33 pm
Comet did it by patching the source so that it could do unicode. That patch has not made it into the FSO source yet.

Post by: karajorma on January 05, 2010, 05:50:52 pm
You've kinda answered your own question. He altered the code to allow other characters. But since he did that for the original source and not FSO there's no way to simply patch it in and it has to be added in by hand now.

Someone who did the german translation? If noone does it im going to do it today ;)
Title: Re: Translations
Post by: karajorma on January 28, 2010, 12:26:35 am
Freespace 2 has always had a German translation actually. So the translation of the engine text is already handled.
Diaspora will need translation of the text specific to our game of course, but it will be quite a while before we are ready for that as translations of the actual mission text is something we will only do about the same time as we handle voice acting.

But don't install the german version. Doing so causes problems with other FS2 based games.

Good luck with the translation.

Hi people, I don't know if there's a Spanish version of strings.tbl , because I have seen the first link to a year old post of translations and it said that there was a Spanish one and I've already started with the translation :) . I hope to have it ready in 3 or 5 days  :D !!
Title: Re: Translations
Post by: karajorma on January 28, 2010, 08:55:47 pm
As far as I know the only file we've ever gotten out of this is the strings.tbl Richard posted which fixed French translations. No one else who has posted on this thread has ever finished as far as I'm aware.
Title: Re: Translations
Post by: Agba on January 29, 2010, 09:37:25 am
so, should i translate the file into german or do you take these one from the german version of the game?
Title: Re: Translations
Post by: Richard on January 29, 2010, 09:39:32 am
I thinks you have to do all the translation because in the original game, there is no the word "diaspora".
Take my strings.tbl, search the german part and start translation =).

Good luck!

Yeah, a quick read through and replacement of all the instances of Freespace/Freespace II with Diaspora wouldn't hurt. There shouldn't be that much more to do at this point though.

I have one problem, between 502 and 620 I have no more than this sentece: "The control config action text goes between 507 and 619". but I've checked Richard's translation and it has one part that the English one doesn't have: "Misc. new strings added".
Where can I find it in English? And do I need to erase every Freespace copyright or replace it with Diaspora copyright??

You can find it in the string.tbl I tranlated.
Take the first part which is in english and use the text you need =)
And you can go here :http://wbe03.mibbit.com/?settings=293cbec0e27282897519f438e6cb5b44&server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23diaspora

Just one thing, I said that I would finish the Spanish translation in 3 or 5 days... but I'm sorry to say it's taking me more time, but don't worry, I'm working on it. I only need some extra days and I'll have it entirely in Spanish!! Just wanted to say that the translation is still alive.

There's a lot to translate so I'm not surprised it's taking you a while. :) Keep at it. We'll be really happy to include this with the game. :)

Ok, now I'm really proud to say that the translation is completely finished. I've checked spelling mistakes and I've put the translation with the rest in the same strings.tbl. I hope it may be useful!!
