Title: Request for Lucy (capital02.pof)
Post by: ARSPR on June 27, 2006, 11:53:35 am
Yesterday I noticed FSPort 3.0.3. has its own copy of Lucy (capital02.pof) which has less quality than mv_models one.

I asked about it in FreeSpace Conversion section, (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,40696.0.html), and Goober answered that the main difference is that the Port Lucy has a shield mesh.

Would it be possible to copy/adapt this mesh to the mv_models one so there was no need to use a special port version? Or would it have some kind of side effect on actual FS2 campaigns which use Lucy (like Derelict)?

If possible, can any modeler do it please?

Thank you.

Why not just modify the tables and missions so that the Lucy has surface sheilds?

I don't remember FS1 Lucy having a shield effect - it was just a regular capital ship with 'invincible' set.  Right?   :nervous:

Well, I'd say it's ok to have the effect. After all it's supposed to have shields. :)

*smacks pecenipicek*

The Port specifically asked for a shielded Lucifer when it was first starting out.  It was one of the first things added, after the basic FS1 ship set.

*hides in a corner*

yes master, i'll never repeat my error again!

:p

umm, so, why doesnt anyone just replace the shield mesh with the hi-poly lucy and put that in fsport?

Yeah they're geometrically almost the same, wouldn't the same shield mesh work?  *Knows nothing about shield meshes*

I assume all shields on those ships which have them are enabled by default in FS2. As a result, any campaigns which have a Lucifer which should not be shielded (i.e. Derelict) would need to be modified so that the shields on the Lucifer ship are disabled.

You could probably include the shield mesh with the main model, but give it 0 shields in the table, and then the conversion team would just need to create a second table entry rather than including an entire model?

In overall shape they're close, but a huge ammount of Lucy sticks out through that shield mesh. The problem is simply that that older shield mesh really did hug the hull like a skin, - so the slightest rise in hull height means large areas poke through it on the new one.

Besides, it's another load of work for the collision detection system to handle. It'd be much more efficient using the surface shields feature.
