Title: Author Topic: important wiki matter: please post thoughts 2
Post by: General Battuta on February 05, 2021, 11:21:42 am
I thought we all agreed the Mixalot got to stay. The page got protected with the Mixalot there!

Then it got unprotected and somebody removed the Mixalot and now it has been protected again with no Mixalot. Why the reversal? Mods??

we all agreed

Nope. At no point in history it was widely accepted by this community.

You don't speak for the community, Mobius.

I vote Mixalot stays.

EDIT:

And seriously, the last time we discussed this, it was pretty clear that people don't mind jokes on the wiki.

Yeah, last time we talked about this there was a clear consensus, and TopAce protected the article with the very good joke in place. We're supposed to be burying old conflicts, not reopening them!

Here is TopAce's verdict as of November 2020

Yeah, put it back. A little bit of levity never hurt anyone and the broad consensus last time was to keep it.

Okay, for some reason I remembered as if I had removed the comment before protecting. Seeing the page's history, it's a false memory, apparently. Sorry about that.

Just please tell me this stuff is now over. For real.

I think we’d like it to be!

Looking at the history it was someone called Meganew who deleted it this time. I can’t find anyone by that name on the forums or Discord so I don’t know who that is.

Probably just an innocent poster trying to clean up some vandalism ;)

e: We should put Meganew's perfectly valid VC back in while we're at it, will do that in a few if nobody has

Just saw this - the meme honestly seems pretty dated and am opposed to it being in a place with serious veteran feedback.

No, comrade premiere. It has only begun

there was a clear consensus

Again, nope - many members, including myself, did not agree with it. And my opinion on the matter hasn't changed.

While "most" people who posted on that thread claimed "to be fine" with it, phrases such as "we all agreed" and "there was a clear consensus" do not genuinely describe what happened during the debate.

I can't apply any vetos of course (I'm no FS Wiki authority and I absolutely don't want to be one), but you can't just pretend my voiced opinion doesn't exist. Just my 0.02€.

Okay, phrasing it as "we all agreed" is factually untrue, and "clear consensus" is debatable, too, but there were more who either did not care or approved the comment. I was with you when it came to explaining the reference, and tried to came up with a compromise but it was quickly reverted and the edit war continued.

Clearly there's no solution that would please everyone.

We could leave it off as pretty much no one cares at this point, and leave the veteran comments for actual comments intended to be made about the performance or characteristics of the Aeolus.

If "noone cares", which is entirely untrue as there are people who do care and they outnumber the people who don't, then there's nothing wrong with this one line, which is both a funny reference and entirely true to stay in there.

Is there not a dedicated place where those who contribute to the wiki regularly can go hash this out, politely, without generating further drama?  Go create a policy on wiki contributions and the frivolous versus the factual.  I'll set you lot up with a Google Meets invite if I must.  While I see no harm in the odd amusing comment, this seems like an issue that should simply be resolved once and for all so it does not keep coming up.

In fact, an editing/commenting policy on the wiki itself, created by the collaborators on it (HINT HINT) seems like a great place to start.

We hashed it out and arrived at a consensus last time. The topic is closed.

Why though? No reason to not re-examine it down the line.

Why though? No reason to not re-examine it down the line.

...it is a nine-word joke that was decided could stay. What possible reason could there be to revisit it?

Perhaps the fact it really does to the average user look like vandalism that hasn’t been reverted yet?

You will have to explain to me any possible universe in which someone stumbles onto the Aeolus article, scrolls down to the veteran comments, reads a joke there, and has the immediate reaction of "Oh no, vandalism!"

Andreas and Mongoose: You are both speculating. Unless someone (who doesn't know the origin of that comment and the... the... discussion about it) comes along, and incites a renewed discussion about it, let's not worry about it. Want a little factoid? It's been more than 10 years since that comment (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php?title=GTC_Aeolus&oldid=30892) was added.

I'm not vetoing the edit. I'm in no position to do it, either, and I'm not willing to edit that Aeolus VC. If the Wiki Admins want to leave that VC as it is, so be it.

I decided to post on this thread simply because I found the proposed description of our previous debate to be rather... inaccurate. There definitely was some consensus in favor of Battuta's edit, but it wasn't unanimous. Hence my comments on this thread.

So, in other words, by reply 23 we've got to the point where you're saying that the matter was discussed previously and the agreement was that the comment would stay.

I thought we all agreed the Mixalot got to stay.

Seriously?

This. This is what needs to stop in this community. Pointless bickering over nothing. The matter was addressed last time, it was resolved. It does not need to be constantly relitigated so that people can find fresh trivial issues to argue about.

Perhaps we should all have a Frozen gif on hand for these conversations.

This one seems useful.

I suspect we will be seeing a lot of it in the future.

Yeah. I know I've singled out Mobius for doing it on this thread, but he's definitely not the only one doing it in the community by a long way.

I'm letting it go, in fact - do whatever you think it's appropriate about that VC.

However, you should at least acknowledge that it's not ok to change history, either. If somebody said something you can't pretend it didn't happen at all. In fact, as I said earlier, I'm not posting on this thread because I want that Wiki edit undone - my comments over here are aimed specifically at the several, inaccurate references to the previous debate.

Mobius, I know English isn't your first language but if someone says "We all agreed" that can mean that people had other opinions but the majority decided differently. Which is literally what Battuta's first post said.

So seriously, stop.

Hey, it was mentioned up above that English isn't your first language, right? I totally get how it sounds like "erasing history", but this one really is just a miscommunication. At least where I'm from, "we all" is usually understood to refer to the group as a whole, not every individual.

Maybe the lesson here is to be more mindful when choosing idioms for an international audience...

Does the wiki support comments? <!-- The wiki staff have decided this comment is funny and harmless. Please don't delete it. --> (or whatever syntax) should address the problem of people thinking it's vandalism, if its possible.

AFAIK there's no dedicated syntax for jokes so you could theoretically add [this is a joke, don't take it seriously!] right before/after the joke itself. I guess doing so would not violate any of the Wiki policies or rules.

I don't care about the long term storage of the screenshot I just took.

I don't really know the song off the top of my head but there is zero way that last line is offending anyone, new, old, informed, uninformed.

Please can we lock it off and move on 😂😂😂😂
