They were Lokis until I realized that they were anachronistic, and asked Ransom to change them. :)  Lokis didn't exist at the time this teaser takes place.

But the GTI couldn't have begun to construct the Hades until they had seen the Lucifer.  Unless you are trying to imply that the GTI knew about the Shivans before they attacked :nervous:

Hmm.  That line sounds oddly familiar...

But it's not necessary to know about the Shivans, or the Lucifer, to construct a ship frame.

Was that all done in-game? Or no? I guess if you used the game models it would look pretty much like the game. Some of the models didn't seem to move quite like they would have in the game either. Hard for me to say.

Good stuff though. Reminds me a bit of the Star Trek trailer.

It was all in-game, except for the text which was added in post-production.  It took advantage of several of WMC's new camera sexps.

Go right ahead.  Now that the teaser's out, it's fair game. :)

I actually emailed Ransom to ask if he could make another version of the teaser with the model rotated 180 degrees, since it's hard to make out a lot of the detail currently.  I haven't heard back from him yet.

Title: Re: Teaser
Post by: Vasudan Admiral on September 07, 2008, 01:41:24 am
Rightyoh then:

Well, the hades is the most complex model I've built to date, surpassing even TI's 'Spaceball-One' look alike. (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Spaceball1/Act1PirateBaseClay1.jpg) The greebles on it will make heavy use of detail boxes, and the entire ship will be mapped as efficiently as I can possibly make it. The geometry is completely stable, and if all goes to plan the full detail version shouldn't be too much of a performance hit in-game. :)

I expect there will be two versions eventually - one of around 30 000 polys and one of around 80 000 for those with higher end machines. If you can run ships like the HTL Orion and HTL Hecate with the MVPs, you should at least be able to use the lower detail one. :)

(http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/th_HadesBig20001.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/HadesBig20001.jpg)

(http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/th_HadesBig20003.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/HadesBig20003.jpg)

(http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/th_HadesBig20006.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/HadesBig20006.jpg)

(http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/th_HadesBig20007.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/HadesBig20007.jpg)

And finally, to show the model works in-game:
(http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/th_HadesInGame1.jpg) (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/Hades/HadesInGame1.jpg)

That's a very nice Hades model, VA (= Vasudan Admiral?). I want to hug it. :D

It makes the Hades look very, very pretty.

Now waiting for the trailer to download...

...looks like a lot of people have been patiently waiting for ST:R, eh? Silence is golden. :)

...still downloading...

I wonder how nice the trailer will be. I can't wait to see it!

Got it.

lol, well....errrm.....haven't gotten that far yet, so I'm not sure myself. :D

I'm hoping to cap it at 2 2048 res textures as a maximum for the 30k poly version, though I can probably go up to around a 4096 res for the 80k.

I'm just about drooling on my keyboard right now.  That is drop-dead sexy.  You didn't just raise the bar; you threw it into the next time zone.  Amazing work.  The trailer is great, too. :D

It's funny I'd never noticed it before, but the Colossus's head section and general layout seems to take some cues from the design of the Hades.  Maybe those old GTI schematics got put to a bit of good use.

(And speaking of Spaceball One, you should totally throw that together next.  Complete with transformation. :p)

The uv map should be fun, and that amount of detail calls for simpler texturing. Either way you are going to be a little bit busy for a while.   :drevil:

It's worth noting that neither the Port nor ST:R require SCP. :p  (Although the SCP does allow you to have certain enhancements.)

Ransom has been nice enough to do another version of the trailer with an alternate view.  See the first post.

Great trailer by the way, I wasn't so much impressed with the model (these things seem to go straight past me unless I see them in an untextured view) as I was with the overall style of the trailer, the smaller views followed by the big reveal.  Nice work whoever made it.

But it's not necessary to know about the Shivans, or the Lucifer, to construct a ship frame.

Still, I thought the Hades was a specific attempt by the GTI to reconstruct the Lucifer... :doubt:

There's really not much more I can say without verging into spoiler territory, so you'll just have to wait until the release. :D

I will say this: All the plot points in the original Silent Threat are there in Silent Threat: Reborn, in one form or another.

Quote from: The Return to Ross 128 - FreeSpace Wiki
Despite it's imposing name, the mission does not reveal anything of vital importance -- in other words nothing -- about the mysterious events that took place at Ross 128.

Are you going to invent something about the Shivans' mysterious arrival, or just leave it alone?

mmm, question VA, did you have any problems getting it into pof?

for example, i cant really manage to convince pcs2 to convert a 120k poly's model. it just doesnt save...
This took a lot of work and hair-pulling to figure out actually, and I'm still not 100% clear on what was going on. The engine can seemingly accept models that have huge polycounts (I've gotten a 230k poly test model in-game), but the catch is that there is some kind of crash bug that is limiting the total number of polys that can be in any one subobject. I say bug because this number appears to change. A lot. On one model you might be able to fit in excess of 30k polygons into one subobject, but the next you might trigger it at about 18k.

I also think the bug is originating from PCS2 (and it affected PCS1 as well) rather than FSO, because according to Wanderers analysis of one such 'dead POF' the file terminated unexpectedly, which would pretty clearly be a death-sentance for it.
Title: Re: Teaser
Post by: pecenipicek on September 11, 2008, 02:37:28 am
it does originate from pcs 2. it either a) hangs when loading the model's smoothgroups or, when it actually loads the model, it hangs when saving to pof. either the bsp tree generator is bugged or something else is wonky.
Title: Re: Teaser
Post by: Vasudan Admiral on September 11, 2008, 07:50:46 am
Those are different errors to the one I was describing I think. What kind of polycounts per subobject did you have in that model?
Title: Re: Teaser
Post by: pecenipicek on September 11, 2008, 10:18:14 am
120k per single subobject. PCS 2.0.3 imported it fine if there was no texture defined in ts7.6, but hanged when importing a .cob with a texture and any kind of smoothgroups or when saving the one with no texture. its possible that when saving into pof the bspgen has a preallocated amount of bits per subobject (and the amount of data depends on the type of polygons included...ie, smoothing data, if its planar, if its not, the rotation or such. i dont know really how pof handles that sort of data, but the pmf format handles it well). that would somewhat explain the difference between importing 18k and importing far less than it.

Well, when you think of it, the lost generation should be all the Terrans who were not in Sol at the time of the jump node's collapse, so in ST:R, that is relevant.

Actually, the Lost Generation was the generation born AFTER the sol node collapsed. Those who  were not in Sol WHEN it collapsed is probably what the intro refers to as the Elders. "The Elders call us the Lost Generation."

Actually, on second thought, probably not. Remember Bosch is part of the Lost Generation as per his monologue, and he's old enough to have served in the Great War I believe. Speaking of his monologue, maybe silent threat reborn will end at Deneb with the Hades crashing planetward to fit the intro.
