Don't put the mod in the FreeSpace2 folder, make a new folder (e.g: \FreeSpace2\Derelict) and put the mod files in there. In the launcg=her, select that folder with the mod tab.

thats how it's set up. now i can get the fsport to kind of work (dont know why). it loads everything form fs 1 but when i do a mission it runs fs 2.

i have no idea whats wrong.

Download this, extract it with 7-Zip into your FSO directory, and then select a 3.6.10 debug build in the launcher. Run it, and when it crashes post the fs2_open.log from \data.

it works if i just put the .vp files in the main freespace 2 folder and choose the correct campaign. i think i'm just gonna do that.

2. The only proper way to do things is to use subfolders for mods. So, as it was said, place all mods into their own subfolders, like Derelict to \freespace2\derelict\ and FSPort to \freespace2\fsport\ and so on. Note, that the MediaVPs are also a "mod". Then, use the Launcher's MOD tab to select the mod folder you wish to use. After that, start the game and select the proper campaign from the Campaign Room. If you only select FSPort as a mod but skip the second step, you'll attempt to play the FS2 campaign with FSPort and trust me, that is evil

3. I'll repeat, just in case. Do not place all mods into \freespace2\. Sure, it might seem like the easy option at first, but soon you'll learn that it just doesn't work. Numerous mods, like FSPort and Cardinal Spear, have their own table files and if all the mod vps are in \freespace2\, the one that is first alphabetically gets its table files read first. What this means is, that all the other mods will die horribly since wrong table files are used.

Hmm, you did get your FreeSpace stuff from Turey's Installer, right?  Or did you use another source?  Reason I'm asking is just in case you're using an ancient build from a long time ago... Turey's will get the latest official build, and IIRC you can also get some of the more stable development builds from it as well.

Download the suggested 3.6.10 build in my signature as well as launcher 5.5d. Put them in your FS folder, and run launcher.exe.

1. Install FreeSpace 2 from your disks, if you haven't already. Install it to C:\Games\FreeSpace2.  Then install the 1.2 patch.  If you don't have the FS2 Retail Disks, skip down to step 6, below.

Hi, I'm trying to install the mod. I have both retail versions of FS1 and FS2, but the "1.2 patch" link does not work. If someone could help me out here, it would be greatly appreciated =D

You shouldn't need it.  The installer will update the files for you.  To save some bandwidth you can grab it here if you want.

Depends on your internet connection speed. It downloads over 6GB.

You won't need that file, provided you have a full retail installation of FS2 (either from the discs or GoG) sitting on your HDD already.

For now, all I want is to play the first and second game campaigns with FSO and the MediaVPs. I did this a few years ago

I have both games from GoG. So glad that came about... getting them otherwise (way back then) made me feel icky.

If you can't get the installer to work, I'd recommend following the manual install guide found here. While it does not cover installation of the FSPort, using the experience gained from following it will make the manual installation of the FSPort (using the instructions in the release thread) easier.
