Title: nameplates?
Post by: Rodo on October 11, 2008, 11:12:00 pm
Hi there!

So, I've been trying to get one done for some time now.

Reading some of the posts over here I made the text for the nameplate with gimp and then went to the fred2 and started changing the textures till I got the one I was looking for.

I want to get a fenris with a nameplate so I extracted cruiser01-04.dds (I guess that's the one im supposed to edit right?) and pasted the layer with the letters, then I went to the game and got nothing :S
after looking a little more I found this strange nameplate or something like that watch images

but I think something is wrong cause I didnt wrote orion on the nameplate.. so I got really dizzy :S

Can someone give me some pointers about this, cause I think Im missing some step but honestly... no I have clue about it.

IIRC, nameplate textures for the Fenris can be handled with replacing the texture "nameplate" in FRED with the appropriate nameplate. It should just be pure whit, with the text in the Alpha channel.
I don't know if that was clear enough, and I'm sure someone else can explain it better...

Name plates should be transparent, with the text written in white at the opacity of your choice.

The issues with lighting are related to the latest batch of shaders (shader003), not the nameplate itself. It can be fixed by fooling with moving replacing a couple of the shader files with ones from an earlier shader release (shader1112), but I'm a bit wary of handing out instructions for that because the latest shaders are supposedly less problematic in general...

The reason you get GTD Orion to appear as a nameplate is because your default nameplate texture (called nameplate.*) has that text on it. Find that and replace it with a blank nameplate texture (fully transparent) unless you want every ship with no pre-assigned nameplate to be a GTD Orion.

Then you need to assign a custom nameplate for your ships with FRED2_Open by using the texture replacement (repalce the default "nameplate" with "shipname"), and it should work.

I get no option "nameplate" om texture replacement in fred2, maybe I have an older version of fred, Ill check that and try to use just the nameplate itself.

Texture replacement should have two fields, old texture and new texture. Old texture is nameplate, new texture is... whatever your nameplate texture is named.

finally I got it working ^^
The problem was that I had fred2 without the -mod mediavps so the option for "nameplate" was not showing.

Tnks guys.
