Question about FRED_open
Hi this may or may not have been answered before but how do you put new mods in FRED_open. I'm trying to put the mods of GTI whitehall, Naroes and Bretnio. The cario mod went in fine

This is more of a modding question so I'm moving it here.

If you've managed to add the Cairo already then you just need to repeat the process of editing ships.tbl or adding a -ship.tbm like you did before.

          ship.tbl is a file inside the root.vp which has a list of all ships in game. You can use VPView to extract that file, and then edit it like a normal txt file. Basically all you need to do is add the game data for the units you want to add to the ships.tbl, then put that .tbl into whatever directory you've got your mod in (under the data/tables/ directory). And then it'll read it. Roughly.

Do not open the .pof just yet. You don't want to do that unless you really really really want to change a model in some way.

Steps for loading in ships/stations/objects:

1. Place model file in the \FreeSpace2\data\models directory.
2. Find ships.tbl in the \FreeSpace2\data\tables directory. If it is not there, you will need VPView to open the Root.VP file and extract the table called ships.tbl.
3. Open ships.tbl with WordPad or Notepad. WordPad is a better choice--will not lag as bad.
4. If your ship came with a packaged .tbl file, or a text file with the .tbl entry, copy and paste that anywhere in the ships.tbl file.
4a. On some occasions, a ship will need special weapons, which should be included in the downloaded directory. Find and/or make the weapons.tbl file, and copy and paste the special weapons into the weapons file.

And you should be good to go.

no i mean FRED could not open it.
ok i just tried what you sayed and i got the best results yet.
it work FRED loaded the .POF file...just not properly. The file had
missing parts in it i have a screenshot if you want.

But does it work in game? If there are no glitches in your actual mission, then you might be able to safely ignore any anomolies...

If you have small craft without a docking point,  make sure you turn support ships OFF!  Otherwise they cause a crash when they call in a support ship when you test missions!!!!!!

Did you use any special textures for it? And what kind of ship is it? It may be that the game cannot find your textures, in the event that you used non-retail or modded textures.

i don't know is the special textures .pcx files special textures also i do have these did i have to put them in a different file to install them?

Heres a screenshot of the problem as you can see there are parts missing.
Edit:Ok i found something new in the mod view program i can see the entire ship (without textures) and it comes up fine (i also got Twists of Fate a few ships have the same problem as below) does this mean that FreeSpace can't find the right textures?

Yeah, that's most likely what's going on.
What you want to do is put the textures being used on the parts that are missing into the FreeSpace2\data\maps folder.

that's where anything related to FS2 looks for its ship textures. If there are missing glow maps or some such, those textures should go in the FreeSpace2\data\effects folder.

Did you ever solve your problem?

Even with NO TEXTURES if the pof and table were correct it would be in game, just INVISIBLE.

Like long ago I added the Xanthus, a VBB pof with no textures and you had this invisible cap ship firing on Shivans :)

Till I opened it in modelview and added temp textures to use of course.
