:wtf: Would you mind specifying what Freespace 2 "stuff"?
And you could stand to have some more RAM. But that shouldn't be the cause of whatever your problem is.

It says i need 3d Software to run it. That the video card does not have.
Do you know where i can dl the retail version if i can't run this?
-
Do you have OpenGL? I think you need it. What graphics card do you have?
BTW, retail is required to run FSO. There are DL links here : http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38195.0.html

This is going to sound stupd but i don't know how to find out.
And wiki says free space 2 is 250mb thing. the download i saw was 3 times that for 1 disk. s the hades one the retail normal one? i think the thing that i dl'ed incuded the game. but i can't run it with the extra specs
-
IIRC, the HOTU version is 250mb. The HOTU version has no voice, movies, animations, and only very very very low-res effects. The real retail version of FS 2 has three CDs.
You don't have OpenGL. OpenGL is a 3d accelerator, and is required for FSO. If you want, you could try some old builds of FSO that still have Direct 3d compatibility, but they aren't going to look so good. Otherwise, your screwed. You'd have to stick with retail until you get a more recent card.
To find out your graphics card:
1: right click on "my computer"
2: go to manage
3: go to "device manager" in the left box
4: then in the large box on the right, look for "display adapters". It's in there.

Ok, found it, its a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
Where can i find the low res one? even if it looks a little better then the original Freespace 2, i'm ok. I want to take screen shoots to school and get more to play!
-
Ok. I have never heard of that card, so it probably sucks.
http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?list.9
there are all the old builds. You can probably also find some old stuff that you can run on that site, too.
-
Thanks! what version do you think would run best on my computer?
-
Depends on how you define best. Start with the most recent old build, and if doesn't work as well as you want it to, then work your way down the list.

Thanks. It took so long to install before, so i wont take any chances. ill download the most oldest version.
-
Your computer isn't that bad. In fact, all it needs to run the current, modern version is a new gfx card.
-
Thanks, But i don't know whitch version doesen't need that.
I think ill install the original Freespace 2 and play that abit, then install a 43 mb version 3.5 or 3.6

Sorry, you're screwed with using Freespace Open. The VIA/S3 chips don't support OpenGL unfortunately - however, you can run the game in DirectX8, as long as you don't use the new effects (as I believe they are alpha blended - try it with them enabled, if you don't get white boxes then you're ok). Go to the Launcher, go to the Video tab, and select "DirectX 8". :)

I'm going to sound like an idiot to you, but i don't know how to switch. it says only direct X 9.0 were do i un update to 8.0?
-
:wtf:
I think UT means Direct 3D8, not DirectX 8.
-
Once again im an idiot, not the best with computers, but where do i dl direct3d8?
-
OK, ive givin up on sfreespace open, but i have 1 more question:
i have the choices of core files, sounds, animations, and high quality graphics. Do i need the better video card for those?
-
You can't run those without freespace open.
-
Right then. Off to Google land i go!
-
On the hades site, does the download of freespace need a CD Key? i lost mine
-
Freespace 2 never needed a CD key. :p
-
Well, that helps, thanks!
-
How rude of me to forget:
:welcome:
Keep posting if you run into any more difficulties. I'll be here and try and help. Unless I'm at school. In which case, it will be a couple hours. Unless it's near the end or beginning, when it will be less than one or several hours, respectively.
-
Ok, after dl'ing all 3 cd's from the hades website, i have NO idea how to install it :doubt:
Can you please tell me how?
-
Okay, I'm assuming you have a CD burner, if you don't, see the alternative
First you download an ISO burner
You put a blank CD in the burner
You select the first freespace cd file and click "burn"
After cd is completed repeat process for the other two.
Then use the CDs to install the game
----------------
Alternatively get 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/), use it to extract the files in the ISOs to a directory, and run the setup program from there.
-
Gah! Stop with the falsehoods!

Nope. HotU is ~600MB, and the only thing it's missing is the cutscenes.

If you're using my Installer, grab FreeSpace 2 Retail Core and all of its subsections. That'll get you retail, minus the cutscenes.
-
UniChrome IGP should work fine, IIRC. You just need more system RAM, (memory) so that the IGP can share more of it. If you upgrade to 2 GB dual channel (1GB x 2), then your IGP should be able to run 128 or 256 MB of that as GFX memory. Use the CPU-Z link in my siggy to find your motherboard make/model, and I'll try to get more info for you.
-
Unichrome, like I said, doesn't have OpenGL support, so he's probably screwed when it comes to using the new effects.
-

Just to clarify v2 of the HotU is 600MB. v1 was 250MB and was really rather rubbish in comparison to having the disks. I suspect that thesizzler simply forgot to mention that there were two versions.

There are two versions?
When did the second one come out?
-
Feb 2006.
Incidentally, way to go on making me look like an idiot for trying to defend you. I'll have to make sure I don't do that again. :p
-
I'm sorry I didn't pay attention to the HOTU versions after I realized how easy it was to get the three CDs. :nervous:
I suppose it all evens out. Turey made me look stupid for not knowing about the more recent HOTU version, you were tactful enough to not do that too him that much, then I made you look dumb, and then you made me look dumb again. See? And then I suppose there's me making myself look dumb with this message, but I'm too lazy to delete it, so I'll just leave it :blah:.
-

Fair enough but if you're unable to use Turey's installer and want to download the game and FSO, HotU is actually much more efficient than ISOs.

Or he could just get a good but cheap video card that has OpenGL support like a X1300Pro or something.
-
Unless he's on a laptop, which, AFAIK, S3 chips are mostly used for.
-

http://www.s3graphics.com/en/products/unichrome/
Which UniChrome?
The VIA UniChrome™ Pro IGP graphics core features a robust 2D/3D graphics engine...
...
» Full Software support including Microsoft DirectX 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and Open GL support...
-
I think i need to uninstall the Open version, i got mad trying to run the original and went to download the demo. Gave me the same error.
Is there something in the setup? do i have to delete the open version for it to work?

All of the Unichromes. Their OpenGL support is a farce, trust me, I used to have a Unichrome Pro as well. http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=31&threadid=65733&enterthread=y
And what sort of error did it give you?
-
Freespace 2 requires glide or Diret3d Hardware Acceleration. you will not be able to run Freespace 2 without it.
Could the open thing i have in my recycle been be affecting this? do i have to delete it?
-
Good news, i got it to run, but i have to configure a file called lanucher to get open to run. or anything but the demo... im missing OpenAL32.dll
Anybody know where i can find that?

No, you need a better graphics card.
-
I got it to work (yay!!!) but i need to file mentioned above to run the open version
Do you know where i can download that 1 file?
-
http://www.openal.org/ (http://www.openal.org/)
Install this
-
Sorry i keep giving you errors, but i found another one...
i have to configure the launcher, but it says that freespace2/fred2 cannot run from a route directory.
What does this mean?

Try moving launcher6.ini from your FS2 root dir out (or deleting it), then run the Launcher again.

I tried running the game rfom the launcher, the screen went black like it was loading, then it died saying that it coulden't swap buffers
how do i fix THIS?
-
IIRC you must run FS2 from a directory that has no spaces in it. So you can't have "C:\Games\Freespace 2"; it would have to be "C:\Games\Freespace2".
-
That's an old bug that has been fixed, IIRC. Unless you're using an old version of the Launcher, it won't bother you. 5.5 and above should be fine.

Not even Taylor knows apparently. He just removed the error in 3.6.10 :D
I know for certain that the error doesn't appear if you run the game in a window (Launcher->Features->Dev Tool->Run in a window).
