Title: A New NTV Demo?
Post by: Mobius on November 23, 2008, 07:41:46 am
The title is self-explanatory. Would you like to play a short demo of NTV or you prefer to wait for the main campaign, or at least for the first part of the campaign? I want to know what the community thinks about that possibility. I'd be happy if you cast a vote and post a comment to explain the reasons behind your choice. :)

PS

Sorry for the asbence of Snuffleupagus but it wasn't the case to let it(him?) here.  :p

I'd even just like to see if the patched version of the old demo could be found and cleaned up a bit....

I'm afraid an eventual new demo isn't goign to be anything like the old one. The new NTV campaign doesn't start with the beginning of the rebellion...

Okay, then I'd still advise a demo / incremental release strategy. :)

I'm also for a demo. I like NTV for being an NTF campaign and now having good FREDders, so I am interested to see what you can do with NTV. Second, everyone likes demos. Plus, it'd be benefitial for all. You show off your work and attract a crowd, while we get to play something.

A demo would be swell.

I don't know, I love to play, but enough with the demo thing, better than playing a demo is playing the first part of the campaign.
Look at BP, was there a demo version?? I relatively new so I'm not sure but playing the first part of the campaign was even better than any other thing.

I'd like a demo if it doesn't interfere with the overall progress of the project.  If you go for a segmented release, the initial offering could serve just as well.

/me has voted.

I support a demo if you guys can manage it. Demos are good because they set the tone for the whole campaign. In fact, the reason why I reversed my judgement about FS2 from "something that will never happen" to "the best space simulator in the world" is primarily because I played the demo and was swept away by it.

...and as a matter of fact, while INFR1 wasn't technically a demo, it gave me high hopes for anything Inferno. Which is why I still sit and wait eagerly for INF SCP even though it'll take quite a while to come out. ;)

Yes, please. My FREDding on that old Demo is embarrasing. The less anyone feels compelled to play it the better. :)

Thanks for your votes, the team will consider them... :D

And Black Wolf, should you contribute to the project? You have an NTV badge... :p ;)

I voted yes, but I'm hoping a demo would be just the first couple of missions of the main campaign.  Don't do a demo that fills in background information and will require an additional plot and dialogue.

If we release a demo pack it'll contain at least the first 5 missions of the main NTV campaign. Most of these missions are now WIP, so don't worry... :)

What's the demo download on the NTV site?

You must be refering to the old demo. Since I wasn't part of the team back then the new NTV won't be based on that demo...we're using many of its features, but nothing more...

Sounds good.  I just don't like when developers put a lot of effort into a demo that is a prequel to the story, when all that does is delay progress on the actual game.

I would also like to see a demo. The old one is now super buggy and I don't want to put the effort into getting it to work. As for the two people who voted no, might I ask, why?

Didn't want anything spoiled for the main campaign I guess. Is there a working link to the old demo? I wouldn't mind taking a peek at it.

hm, i would've liked a side campaign or something, set at the beginning of the rebellion. i always wanted to know how they pulled it off. maybe introduce a couple of characters that in the main campaign are veteran commander, etc.

The main download page. http://ntv.hard-light.net/ntvdloads.htm (http://ntv.hard-light.net/ntvdloads.htm)

EDIT: Great. Now you got me interested. Now my inexpliciable need to fix everything computer related is becoming irrestible. Guess now I have to fix it.

We may create a side campaign in the future, set during the beginning of the rebellion...I said "in the future" because the team wants to stick with a main campaign plotline that, at least at the very beginning, is as much close as possible to the one of the main FS2 campaign. In other words, NTV will begin during the Battle of Deneb(the second one :D) and the player's effort will help changing the course of events. Obviously, don't expect the NTF to crush the whole GTVA fleet and conquer TV space because it'd be nearly impossible - we'd rather go for plausible compromises.

You will also see in-game cutscenes like jumping sequences to other sectors of a given system. I planned to keep the use of cutscenes to acceptable levels(if I will ever release Steadfast you'll find out what pure cutscened missions are) to preserve the immersion. The result may be something that takes its distance from FS2 gameplay, but the atmosphere will be pretty much the same... :)

Well, fixing the demo seems hopeless. It always says "Missing [at least] 5 ship classes" when loading any mission, the Cyrene always shows up as the dreaded Ulysses model of doom, Subach-7s are invisible, and no cap-ships have any engine effects, only the wash. All of this stuff happens regardless of what build and/or media vps I run it with. Oh well. Dragon, could you try it and see if you get the same errors, just so I don't feel alone :(

Does that mean that we will encounter the GTVA's/FS2's Alpha 1 and get to kill him/her ?
