Title: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: The E on February 03, 2013, 07:19:07 am
So, unfortunately, there have been quite a few of you who are unable to play BP due to issues with the deferred render code.

This is a package that comments out those features so that BP can be played with regular Antipodes builds. Note that the official 3.6.16 Build WILL NOT WORK. We're using a few new mainhall features that require current features from svn to work, so you need to use builds from this forum (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=173.0). Grab the most recent build for your system, unpack it into your FS2 directory, select it in the Launcher, and you're good to go.

Now, because the stock Blue Planet files have a few features that will cause standard builds to error out, you will need these files as well: http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/BP%20Compatibility.7z
Unzip the archive, and place the folders in your FS2 directory. Windows will ask you whether or not to integrate stuff with directories that are already present, you need to give it permission to do so.

Do note that you will probably see a few glowpoints on models where there were none before; those were placed to pretty things up with the deferred lighting code.

Just to be sure (sorry for a layman's question):  I should download both those links (I'm a Windows user)?

Where should I put the stuff in the second link?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: General Battuta on February 03, 2013, 12:22:21 pm
The first link is the compatibility files (which you need to have - please follow the directions under the link carefully), the second link is the build you should be using, which goes in the FS2 directory like any other build and should be selected as your current executable in the launcher.

I just wanted to say despite having to kill off all the shininess effects (and now I have to experiment if any at all will fit), it works on my craptop. Now I can refrain from recalling Richard Hammond and Patrick Stewart in my head about lights.

Spoiler:
A Not-So-Well-Lighted Typhon doesn't mesh well with internal thoughts and realities.

Spoiler:
THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS! I lied about one part.

Thank you for that exhaustive and informative bug report.

Can you please give us some more information? Like, for example, an fs2_open.log (Instructions here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180359.html#msg1180359))?

It works for me now, thank you.  I'm really looking forward to playing BP.  Right now I just completed the mission where you escort the CO of the Sanctuary to the Temaraire.

I was going through Mission 20, all went smoothly until there was a plot crash which... (major spoils ahoy)

Spoiler:
... I call the "Curse of Sergei." The instant he shows up, the game crashes, but everything was cool for me up until that point. I cored the MacDuff and made the transport land.

I tried to reproduce the crash via debug, but I get...

Spoiler:
Radius <0.1f warnings for turrets and centrifuges upon loadup for the Morana MacDuff during mission loadup.

The closest I could get to trying was just after making the initial jump, then I had a warning box that had two options (not three): break into debug or quit.

The last warning I got and the fs2_open.log are attached.

A character (or major ship's) appearance causes a crash for me... again. It's like the plot is deliberately trying to stop me or something.

So, is this gonna continue to be supported in the future seeing as its pretty much a must have?

On this system:

i5 750 @ 2.7 (turbo 3.2)
4 gigs ram
Radeon HD5750

I did a small test with fred putting 2 sathanas facing and firing at each other. With this build I get constant 120fps vs 30fps with the build from this thread: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.0. The second the beams start charging the fps drops and plummets when all 8 beams are going off.

-mod blueplanet2,blueplanet,mediavps_3612 -nomotiondebris -3dshockwave -no_vsync -rearm_timer -ship_choice_3d -weapon_choice_3d -3dwarp -snd_preload -fps -ambient_factor 80 -spec_exp 11 -spec_point 0.3 -spec_static 0.8 -spec_tube 0.4 -ogl_spec 70

I realize that most of the time there isn't 2 sathanas nor 8 beams lightning up 2 enormous models, its just to illustrate how severe the performance drop is from one version to the other.

Thank god. I actually had a black screen bug when I was trying to land in Delenda Est, that was horrible.

Quick question: does the BGM in Icarus cut out at the second shot of Saturn for anybody else? It's probably just my computer but I might as well throw it out there just in case.

e: confirming Black_Yoshi1230's crash.  Mission 20 invariably CTDs when Sergei jumps in.

I'm also confirming the sergei crash. The Macduff core was exposed and the transport was en route, then sergei jumps in muttering something 'bout his son and boop! we're at desktop.

This with the compat pack, GLSL disabled.

When loading with the debug build, following warning shows up:

I also attached the full log.

Other quick question, why is it mission 20? It's only your 3rd real mission, and mission ~7/8 if you count the opening cinematic and dreamscape.

The mission count treats the entire WiH2 as a whole. When counting from the first mission of WiH1, it's actually M20.

Oh I see, thanks.

That about the crash? If the 'turretarm' being too small is the problem, is there a quick way I/we can notch it up? Or is that just a side effect of something deeper down?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: qwadtep on February 07, 2013, 01:01:48 pm
gefwarship.pof is the MacDuff, if it were the problem I would expect the CTD to occur much earlier.

...soooo what do we do then? Maybe the compat packs forgot to modify Sergei's ship...?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: The E on February 07, 2013, 03:05:50 pm
They didn't "forget" anything. This is a new error that the engine wasn't checking for before. We didn't know it existed prior to this; we'll be putting out a fixed model soon.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: Shorebird_One on February 07, 2013, 03:25:28 pm
Ok ok, I didn't mean 'forget' in a 'bad' way, I was just speculating since I wanted to keep going with the story. I wouldn't blame you guys even it were the case, I mean you guys really don't have to take the time to throw these packs out there for us. But why would it crash upon sergei's arrival, and not after you exit the jump though?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: qwadtep on February 07, 2013, 03:27:27 pm
...soooo what do we do then? Maybe the compat packs forgot to modify Sergei's ship...?
Sergei's ship is a Ulysses and changing it to something else doesn't fix the CTD, meaning the problem isn't there either. It's definitely tied to Sergei's arrival somehow but nothing I do seems to fix it. I'll try just cutting him out of the mission later.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: Shorebird_One on February 07, 2013, 07:16:11 pm
bu- bu- but then I/we would lose story content :(

Anyways, is there anything I could do to help? I can't get logs since the debug version doesn't get far enough, but it's reproducible at least.
What else does the compat pack change?

I think I've pinpointed the event causing the problem, fix inbound.

e: here we go. Sergei's set-armor-type was muddled into "boost gwilym burners" for some reason. Moved it to its own one-off event. Also added an is-destroyed-delay check to the burner boost event, just to be safe.

Place attached in blueplanet2\data\missions\ and enjoy.

Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: General Battuta on February 09, 2013, 02:28:22 pm
Because nothing in that event should have been remotely a problem.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: qwadtep on February 09, 2013, 02:56:53 pm
The CTD in question is an access violation several seconds after Sergei and Leo Wing jump in, but before Tactical warns you about their payload. I didn't think that event would be the problem either but upon trial and error deleting it solved the problem.

The specific fixes were moving the set-armor-type SEXP to a new event only called once (since it only needs to be anyway), and adding a check that Sergei is still alive when trying to boost his afterburners just in case. I tested both fixes at the same time so I don't know precisely which it was; I'll run another test later.

You're right, there was nothing in the event itself that should logically have been a problem, so my best guess would be something in the set-armor-type SEXP source not playing nice when called in rapid succession.

Yeah, that SEXP was added in the BP.patch. Here's (http://pastebin.com/vEwYs4qJ) a patch, derived from the original BP.patch, that should just add that SEXP and bump the ship class limits, which BP.patch also did. This is what my unofficial BP build uses.

EDIT: Well, the patch also comments out a warning that BP.patch comments out for some reason; I just decided to leave that in.

The patch is really just for coders. I'm afraid you'll have to wait until there's an official build that includes the changes in the patch.

Anyone using it should follow the install instructions in the OP (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.msg1670192#msg1670192) about the compatibility .vp files. They should also delete any data folders that they got from the unofficial OS X BP build, since those are no longer needed.

You might be using the compatibility build executable without the compatibility build VPs?  i.e. the exec is finding entries in the ships table (i.e. glowpoint stuff) that it doesn't know how to deal with.

Haha, headdesk. I'll report back when I install that part.

At first the error seemed similar to http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83720.0, since the popup and black screen crash was exactly what I was getting, but I popped the original deferred rendering build in and the game works fine.

It may be useful to update the OP stating that the .7z contains VPs. I thought from the wording that it was a link containing a bunch of builds in one package and ignored it.

Edit: things run great when I installed the VPs.

Something is still not right for me, I downloaded new Antipode versions of fs2_open 3.6.17 and put bp-compat.vp files in Blue Planet and Blue Planet 2 directories but now Freespace doesn't load at all, I have info that "Freespace 2 Open is now running" and I can see that process in programs manager but nothing happens. Other mods load properly.

I have the same problem here. I have used the new patch, as before this andropodes thingy error came up and i could not play. And I have got shocking quality of the gameplay. The graphics are very rubbish, are they supposed to be like this? I have played previous versions of blue planet and everything worked very well (shiny graphics etc.)

You'll have to give more informations that "rubbish" for us to have any idea what you're talking about. A couple screenshots and a debug log couldn't hurt.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package

Where can i find this debug.log and how can i copy and paste it?

See my signature for a link on how to create the debug log (aka fs2_open.log).

You can either attach it to your post (in which case it'll be deleted after a while) or copy/paste it in
Code: [Select]
code tags (i.e. use the button with the # on it when you're composing your message)

Here is the debug log thingy I think. Concerning these " rubbish" graphics, well there are only basic textures, just shape of the ship, nothing fancy. Where should i put the BP patches? in respective blueplanet folder? Should i delete something?

Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package

I think you should delete these two files:

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\bp-compat.vp' with a checksum of 0x6ef45eaf
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\bp2-compat.vp' with a checksum of 0x9c7d79f8

They seem to be duplicates of the same files in the blueplanet2 and blueplanet directories.

If doing that doesn't help, then also rename this file with a new extension, like multi-mission-pack.vpx (since the error seems to occur when parsing this file).
Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\multi-mission-pack.vp' with a checksum of 0x645cb38e

Lastly, don't worry about the BP.patch files, they're for people who build binaries from source.  You can remove it, or leave it alone, it won't have any effect.

Now the game just crashes. Antipodies error comes out. I have put a couople of screenshots.

The error seems to be in the multi-mission-pack.vp. Please delete it. Not rename it, delete it completely or move it out of the FS2 directory.

Done it. Now this error popss out. Did you check screenshots in my previous post?

EDIT: I am an idiot. I had another blueplanet 2 folder in the blueplanet 2 folder. Stupid. Am i supposed to have a data folder which inludes ( cache-diomedes.bx) in the folder? I can now lauch the game, but still ships only have crappy textures. The engine and glowy effects work fine, as well as laser and missiles effect. Only ships and universe is messed up. I am using 3.17 patched blue planet exe.

Are you using the correct builds? That error only pops up when using a 3.6.17 nightly, or the BP compatibility build without the compatibility vps installed.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: mikomess on March 06, 2013, 07:34:23 am
Which one should i use then?      I have BP compat.vp files and still only textures.

I have fs2_open_3_6_17_SSE2

fs2_open_3_6_17_SSE2_BP

Or should i use 3.6.18 or 3.6.14?

You also have the -spec, -glow, -normal and -env maps switched on, which have been deprecated a while ago. Try removing them; they're probably unrelated to your problem, but one can never be too sure.

More importantly, according to your debug logs you're missing bp2-compat.vp in your BP2 folder. As The E pointed out, this will cause exactly your problem.

And, you should probably use the _BP build.

ah crap, I forgot how windows hides extensions by default, which can cause unexpected behaviour when trying to rename file extensions  :nervous:

mikomess - when I said to remove the bp-compat* files, I meant *only* the copies in your base freespace2 directory.  You need them in blueplanet and blueplanet2 :) (as the other guys have pointed out)

I have uploaded screenshots of my blueplanet 2 folder and contents of mod.ini document.  As you cann see, i have bp compat in my blue planet folder and still the problem persists. Which build should i use? When i use 3.6.17 sse bp, antipodes error comes out.  When i use 3.6.17 sse2, i can play game normally, but ships have no textures.

Can you get us a new log ?

It seems like all textures are reduced to 1x1 or something. First time I see something like this happen.

Can you also look at your ingame settings (F2) to see if you don't have your texture setting set to something ridiculously low ?

One thing I am noticing is that you are using a rather old version of the GPU driver. Please update it.

I can't update the driver.  Version of graphics adapter is not supported at all. I have a notebook.

Buy a real computer ?

No one with a BP badge should behave this way towards users.

Put more politely, it sounds like you hardware may not be able to support BP as it stands. It's possible a coder would have a better idea of what's going on.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package

Well if he has a computer which hardware aren't getting any driver upgrades, ie hardware that is now unsupported by their own manufacturer, he's going to hit more problems than just FSO problems. Getting a new computer is as legitimate an advice as it gets.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package

I would say waste every option available if you're on a laptop and that's the only platform available before you start considering another investment. Hell I did it (being a crap laptop owner), and managed to get compatibility working.

If you somehow can't update your drivers by the GFX manufacturers (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx), see your laptop maker's support/download pages or Google your card for the drivers (be sure you set a System Restore point or some sort of backup if you decide to try a driver you Googled that wasn't from AMD's site). If not, see if your card ended up in the "discontinued" list (it's probably sad to say if that is the case*, then run the next contingency you can think up).

Wanting the best of both power and mobility... shame it can turn out to be a bloody hard dilemma.

Since Antipodes has been merged into FS trunk, dedicated compatibility builds are no longer necessary. You still need the compatibility vps to play with the current nightlies, but you can use those now.

Please try starting the executable with the "-no_glsl" commandline option.

I really have to reiterate that updating your GPU driver is something you should do (I have the exact same GPU in my notebook, and I know for a fact that AMD is still updating them!). If you can't update them, try reinstalling them, as I suspect they've been corrupted.

In the "Features" tab of your launcher, you should find it under the "Troubleshoot" flag list, with the description "Disable GLSL (shader) support". Alternatively, just type -no_glsl in the "Custom flags" field.

Hey guys, how does BP, and the latest version of FSO in general, perform on the Intel HD 4000 located on low-voltage i3/i5 models? Thanks!

For example, how would the following run this game?

Intel Core i3 3217u 1.8GHz
HD 4000
6GB RAM
1366x768 screen

You'll be fine running base FSO, no MediaVPs. But BP will struggle and you will need to use the compatibility package.

I'm using a nightly build I downloaded a few days ago I think.
I ran debug and got some random errors that didn't seem to affect gameplay but might mean something to you guys.
Also post processing freezes the screen every 5 seconds oddly?

Your first issue can be addressed by changing the resolution.

The second one is, unfortunately, a result of your rather old GPU.

Changing the resolution up down, sideways? That's as high as I can go right now, my good monitor is broken. Anything else I can do???
Post processing used to work fine, guess I'll just leave it off. Forgot what it does anyway.  :blah:

Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: Black_Yoshi1230 on March 22, 2013, 12:59:34 am
About the double-HUD elements (this should be thrown in known release issues or something):

4:3 (which this happens on the most from what I've read) - 1024x768 and 1152x864 tend to be the best options. (I've also had some success running it on 1200x900, but that is a custom resolution, which is typed as "-res 1200x900" in Features/Custom Flags.)

16:9 - 1280x720 is the best option for low-end users. From what I've heard, any 16:9 resolution above 720p is safe.

You will need something above 1024 or 720p to run, otherwise, you get no HUD.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: nickd0121 on March 22, 2013, 02:08:34 pm
Thanks a bunch Yoshi, I'll try that when I get back home. I got it to work on 1024x768 the other night, maybe I'll mess around with the res some more.
Thanks again to E also.

Knossos, yeah I know, just hate lowering the res if I don't have to (1280x1024 is pretty low lol).

Did anyone notice the site seemed to go down last night?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: knossosfs2 on March 22, 2013, 04:37:08 pm
Yeah I have experienced resolution problems as well, but never the hud problem. In my situation, all of the ship models become elongated if I set the resolution to my laptop's native 1366x768. 1024x768 works fine for me too, but it appears to zoom in on the models when compared to other resolutions.

On another note, I've been wanting to ask the devs how this laptop would hold up when playing BP:

As a guy stuck with a computer made mostly of virtual duck tape (Mackie?) I'm grateful and impressed that the BP team would take the time to make a compat package for people like me.

Thanks a ton guys!

Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 1680x1050 with 32-bit color...
  Initializing SDL...
  Requested SDL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, stencil: 8, double-buffer: 1, FSAA: 32
  Actual SDL Video values    = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, stencil: 8, double-buffer: 1, FSAA: 8
OpenGL Vendor    : ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL Renderer  : AMD Radeon HD 6770M OpenGL Engine
  OpenGL Version   : 2.1 ATI-7.32.12

That can't be right. That GPU can support OpenGL up to version 4 with proper drivers (read: Windows and closed-source Linux/Unix). If you can, I would suggest updating; as it is, you will need to use the BP compatibility pack and the official 3.7.0RC build of FSO.

Oh yeah, I'm running OSX Lion, last I checked my hardware drivers are up-to-date.

OpenGL 2.1 belongs to the operating system iteration before OSX Lion. The newest OGL that apple supports is 3.2, which is Lion (10.7) and beyond. If you are on Lion and are completely up to date, you shouldn't still be on OGL 2.1.

Being on OpenGL 3.2 could probably fix all your problems as well.

So how do I do that?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: jg18 on July 02, 2013, 11:26:32 pm
It's simple. You can't. :)

You'll need to follow The E's instructions and get the compatibility package (first post of this thread) and the FSO 3.7 release candidate (RC) 2 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=84731.0).

Hi Guys ,

Even after installing the latest nightly builds as suggested in the first post of this thread and downloading the compatibility vp's I am not able to run the game .  :banghead:

Installing the compatibility package atleast got me from not being able to launch the game at all to atleast able to get to the main game screen . I can view the tech room etc.. However still not able to launch any BP missions itself . Here is the relevant piece of error from the debug fs2_open.log:

Please help !  :(

Code: [Select]

Can you please post the entire log?  This may be related to a long install path and the rest of the log will give us that (plus other) info.

That looks like a long path issue alright, unfortunately Freespace2/FSO has problems with long paths like the one that you're using.

Please move your Freespace2 install directory from here 'C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Freespace 2\' to here: 'C:\games\Freespace 2'.

Then also move the blueplanet mod directory from here 'C:\games\Freespace 2\FreeSpace2\BP WiH\blueplanet\' to here: 'C:\games\Freespace 2\blueplanet'

Finally, rerun the launcher and check that the blueplanet mod is correctly selected after the directory moves.

That did the trick.. Thank you so much  !! I am finally able to play the game  :)

Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: The E on May 27, 2014, 09:59:40 am
It seems that you have altered the mod.ini and the locations in which mods are installed. This is a bad thing which we do not recommend; BP currently does not play well with the 2014 MVPs and still relies on the 3.6.12 ones. The blueplanet folders (blueplanet and blueplanet2) as well as the MVPs should be in your FS directory, not in some "mods" directory.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package

The_E, can we expect some way to install BP through the FSO Installer at some point, or are you preparing everything to come together when you release the director's cut (with the VOs, new non-compability pack mods, etc.,etc)?
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: cahdoge on May 27, 2014, 10:40:52 am
I changed it to use the 2014 media VPs
so i replaced the entry in the multimod.

but deleting the multimod entry has no impact.

The problem is caused by something different.
It's irrelevant if the multimod is enabled an also if I'm using the 3.6.17 or the 3.7.1 build I always get the self warnings in the debugger.

I'll give a try with the 3.6.12 build.
Title: Re: The BP Compatibility package
Post by: General Battuta on May 27, 2014, 10:47:24 am
The problem is caused because the game can't find the MediaVPs. It looks like this is because you didn't install them in the right place.

See how you have C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Mods/blueplanet\adv-bp.vp? That will cause huge problems if you try to run BP2, and I'm betting it also has something to do with why the game can't load the MediaVPs (causing all the errors you're seeing).

Nuke your BP install and reinstall like this:

Your blueplanet folder should be located in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\blueplanet
Your blueplanet2 folder (if you are using it) should be located in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\blueplanet2
Your mediavps_3612 folder should be located in C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612

You do not need to worry about getting a 3.6.12 build. You just need the mediavps_3612, and you need to have all your folders in those locations.

Sorry about the hassle. Creating a subfolder like 'mods' will break Blue Planet and any other FreeSpace mod with a dependency structure. If you have any more questions or problems, please just let me know and I'm happy to walk you through fixing them.

Thanks for the information.

But the Media VPs Mod is working out of the FreeSpace2/Mod/MediaVPs_2014 Folder.

I just tried It's also irrelevant if it's sitting in the /Mod Folder.

You need to make sure the 3.6.12 (not 2014) MediaVPs are installed to C:\Games\FreeSpace\mediavps_3612.

Please follow my instructions, then generate a new fs2_open.log file and post it. We can work from there.

Much better. The game is now loading a mediavps_3612 folder - see:

Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612\MV_CB_ANI_2.vp' with a checksum of 0xb58a1f46

The problem is that you don't actually have the mediavps_3612 installed there! Please install the 3.6.12 Mediavps (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0) to C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612.

that mediavps folder looks a bit empty to me. you sure it's filled with the usual awesomeness? You should have some 11 (?) vps there at least, 12, if you count with the mv_advanced.vp

What it looks to me is that fso tried to bring some effects to memory but couldn't find them because it didn't load the mv_effects.vp

funily it works wit the 3.7.1 builds but not with the mediavps 2014.

The 2014 MediaVPs are not a build. They are a content package. They are not compatible with Blue Planet. You need to have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs installed in your mediavps_3612 folder for Blue Planet to work correctly, as described in the install instructions.

The other way around it does.

That's not funny at all; the 2014 MediaVPs require a 3.7.1+ build of FSO.

Out of curiosity, I remember that some people posted in the BP discussion thread that the 2014 MVPs work with a simple mod.ini edit. On my end, MVP2014 is working without issue. What exactly would cause incompatibility? (Mind, I usually just play select missions here and there like Aristea and Delenda este because I found them the most fun. Haven't done a full run through with MVP2014)

We say they are incompatible because we haven't had a chance to test. If a couple reliable people can start a thread and cert that BP works fine all the way through on 2014s that'd be awesome.

I went through Act 1, at least, with the 2014 MediaVPs with a debug build and found no problems. If nobody else gets around to it, I'll probably find some time sooner or later to finish the rest of WiH.

In principle it's working with 3.7.1 and madcaps_2014.

But i get several bugwarnings of missing LOD0 animations of impacts and explosions.
Also some of invalid armour names.

The result is that some glow effects are missing.

The first post has the latest version, and it is compatible with 3.7.2 RC1 & 3.7.2 RC2.
