FreeSpace Discussion / Re: Weird Freespace dreams

Another one. This was supposed to be a mission in the new Blue Planet Chanticleer campaign (which I haven't actually played yet, all I really know about it is that you're flying for the GTVA against the UEF). We were supposed to ambush and raid an enemy fleet and destroy at least 4 capships before the fleet jumped. The fleet was huge, with easily dozens of ships, and they didn't look much like UEF ships either. They had a strange look, a slightly red color and extended shapes with rounded curves, not like any type of ships I was familiar with. They ranged from about the size of an Argo transport to Juggernaut size.

I destroyed one of the smaller ones but then got distracted by something else in the mission and flew far away from the fleet, and a new group of ships jumped in close to me. They registered as hostile but they didn't shoot at me, even when I attacked them. So I figured maybe these could count for my 4 required kills. I began firing on a corvette-sized ship, but when it was down to only 8% hull integrity, some dialogue happened and that entire small group of ships changed IFF to friendly. After that, we were suddenly engaging a bunch of Shivan fighters, including Scorpions, and it took a while to deal with them all.

By this time, the enemy fleet was almost ready to jump and I was still quite far away from it, so I used afterburners to catch up, but I ended up needing to cheat to destroy enough ships in time.

I forget what I was flying for this mission, but I remember that it was some kind of heavy fighter with a turret.

In the debriefing, there was some strange plot information revealed. Some of the ships in the enemy fleet formerly belonged to the NTF, while some didn't, but they were all being commanded by a rogue GTVA admiral who was trying to sell out humanity to a faction of AIs that wanted to stop the GTVA/UEF war, but also enslave the human race (and supposedly make things peaceful and everyone happier).

It was never explained why the enemy ships looked so weird, or why there were Shivans there, though. I think there might have also been some ships from the Wing Commander universe in the mission, but I'm not sure.

Mission & Campaign Releases / Re: RELEASE: Ancient-Shivan War II
« Last post by cy387_lk on April 27, 2024, 03:05:22 am »
A question. It's been a while (like 8 years) since I played this campaign and I'd like to play it again. However, one of the most annoying things is that all in-mission messages are technically bound to some "message notification" sound, making the text to speech module ignore them. This in turn, imo, greatly reduces campaign's story immersion, as it's nearly impossible to read the messages (and there is quite a lot of them) in real time while trying not to get killed.

So my question is: Is there a way to turn this off or somehow remove this binding of all in-mission messages to this sound resource, so the TTS could kick in?

Star Fox: Event Horizon / Re: Star Fox: Event Horizon for FSO

With the recent garrys mod incident of removing nintendo IP based mods from Garrysmod's workshop i have to ask is this mod in danger?

A neat little video essay about the inaccessibility of certain older games, and how it ties into System Shock and its remake which I'm currently streaming.  You know I love a good analysis of game and UI / UX design, and this has some good lessons to take into mind when looking at FreeSpace, the phenomenal job it did in UI and UX, and things to keep in mind when modding for it.

What?  What do you mean you haven't been watching my System Shock streams???

My gut is pressing X as well but I was kind of hoping with that pedigree there'd be at least a little observable evidence when this all gets examined.

FreeSpace Discussion / Re: Should the GTVA build a new frigate class of ships?

The GTVA should just build a bunch of maxim and trebuchet wielding gunboats that leave any larger ship drifting helplessly through space.

I don't think that's a niche that really needs filling.  The Hecate packs enough of a punch to deal with anything smaller than a destroyer, and its firepower is diffuse enough that it can deal with several ships of that size at once.  Where the GTVA is weak is dealing with other capital ships.

If you could build several frigates for the cost of one Hecate, sure, but that's a very difficult question to answer since our information on the engineering and economics of shipbuilding in FreeSpace is extremely limited.  Off the top of my head we know that

  • The Orion costs more to build that it costs to pay its crew of 10,000 for 3 years
  • The Aelous was too expensive
  • The Colossus took 20 years to build
  • The NTF managed to build the Iceni in 18 months or less

If they could pump out Icenis they'd be very useful, they have as much firepower as a destroyer, are more manoeuvrable, are considerably smaller and therefore easier to defend and have 90% of the armour of the Terran destroyers, but who knows how replicable that design is.  Maybe it uses loads of rare materials.

We've been here before.

A drive that does not require reaction mass would indeed be a great invention. However, so far, we haven't found one that wasn't ultimately a measurement error.
