Now imagine if every weapon in the game was like that. Would it be balanced? Would it fcuk. But would it be fun - fcuk yeah!

You could make these weapons deal exactly the same DPS by tweaking literally one more value. I wonder if that would change the balance by a lot.

By nerfing the damage per shot I assume? It could be fun to find out how this affects things. One of the guns in ASW has a very high RoF but each shot is weak, so the DPS balances out. One of my favourite weapons actually :-)

I recall my gatling-type guns dealing anywhere between 2-6 damage per shot yet still being likened to "powerful ship shredders"

If two weapons have equal DPS the one with the higher alpha is generally much better, so you would probably actually need to increase the DPS a bit to keep the higher-ROF weapon even.

Interesting! I tend to make weapons with a higher fire rate have a lower DPS because they have greater utility than slower firing weapons. Have I got my balancing all backwards these past few years?

Re: A celebration of Freespace
that seems sort of experience dependent. Besides the initial merge, I expect higher skill players get more out of the high burst damage weapons as they can make the most of momentary opportunities to fire, especially if that burst is enough to kill many of the things they're facing. Players not able to reliably take advantage of that on the other hand will favor weapons that they can walk onto enemies, and get the most out of spray and pray.
Name your damn turrets and sounds! Numbers alone aren't helpful!

It depends on what you're shooting at I guess. Against slow nonmaneuvering targets where you don't have to take a lot of evasives, DPS wins. But if you're under any kind of pressure, the ability to put all your damage out in the moment when you actually have a shot — when the Dragon is right in the crosshair AND you don't have to evade a missile AND you're not getting whacked by beams AND you have enough energy — is more valuable.

So spike-damage alpha tends to trump DPS in those circumstances.

Obviously if you swing too far towards DPS weapon supremacy you can create some very boring guns. This is why games like Halo tend to keep their DPS weapons pretty weak, since they're easier to use. And a high-alpha weapon costs you more DPS each time you miss.

Another way to think about it is that a guy who has to hide for 59 seconds and shoot you for 1 second is more dangerous than a guy who has to shoot you for 40 seconds to score a kill, even though the second guy technically has better DPS.

BRRRT style weapons like that would still be "fairly" balanced in-game if the energy consumption rate per shot remained unchanged. Energy reserves would be drained much faster. :)

Speaking of which, craft with high energy outputs, combined with proper ETS management, could potentially maintain a stable rate of fire for a long time. In that case I'm afraid the balance would be conaiderably affected.

Wow it's been quite a few years since I played any Freespace. Decided to fire up Blue Planet since I don't think I ever played War in Heaven. I've been spoiled by modern games. Every major mission is absolutely harrowing!
Will have to spend some more time and effort to capture some neat scenes!

Haha you know it's funny I forgot what they originally were playing through Age of Aquarius, but I was pleasantly surprised to find them documented in the wiki https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/Sample_Lighting_Settings--some other options there as well.
Getting rid of the old tags and upping the ambient factor for BP, I ended up with -missile_lighting -post_process 5 -snd_preload -ambient_factor 70 -spec_point 1.2 -spec_static 1.7 -spec_tube 1.5

Kudos to the folks working on Knossos! It's seen massive improvements over the years!

Either Settings>Global Flags or Mod of your chosing>FSO Settings - both have a "Custom Flags" input field. Drop them in there as command line arguments.

Which mission is that 5th shot from?  All of the others appear to be from FS2 missions, but I don't recognize that one.
