The Star Wolves series has as much elements of a space sim as Homeworld does, it's basically Dungeon Siege with a sci fi theme.

EDIT: Then again you already knew that.  :o

Bablefish it  :) thats how I found the Wing Commander/Freespace comparison.

The other really promising and proper space sim in that list is The Tomorrow War. 3D Gamers updated their gallery listing for it on the fifth and it includes some beautiful shots. The game does seemless atmospheric transitions and surface combat.

I'm personally not at all impressed by The Tomorrow War's engine, but the fact that it's based on a Russian novel series does sound promising.

Frontier wasn't that bad..  I actually preffered it, the stupid one with the semi-plot/aliens, Elite 3 maybe was arse-candy though.
Title: Re: Upcomming Space Sims
Post by: Flipside on September 12, 2006, 01:44:26 pm
I always felt the biggest mistake was the fact that they moved away from the old familiar models. In most cases, I slag the sequel off for being too much like the original ,but in this case, bugs aside, the main problem with Frontier for me was that they changed the entire universe from the Physics up, the only thing it really had to do with the Elite I knew and loved was the name. If Frontier had had either limited or at least easier to deal with Physics, the same Engine otherwise, and a more familiar feel to the ships, I think I'd have enjoyed it a lot more.

Combat, I think, was the most dissapointing part of Frontier.

I rather liked Frontier, but for the exploration and trading part and definitely not the combat. What I really want is a game with the size and scope of Frontier, the flight model and mission variety of Freespace, warring factions and when-you-feel-like-it plot like Privateer, and graphics and economic model on par with X3. Unfortunately no games ever seem to have all those elements at once :(
Title: Re: Upcomming Space Sims
Post by: karajorma on September 12, 2006, 03:37:36 pm
I'm not certain it's possible.

Basically you're looking for a game that is both tightly and losely scripted but you do one at the expense of the other.

LOL Well, I see it only as a matter of time before RTS-Type AI starts to be applied to RPG games, so when two factions are at War, rather than this having little unscripted effect on gameplay, the two sides will actively try to build fleets/armies whatever and invade and capture territory etc. That 'may' end up in a situation where one power dominates all the others, though it's highly unlikely, usually 2 AI's are very hard pressed to achieve anything other than a draw. It could be interesting however if the player were invited along with fleets etc for missions that were in-game generated and could actually effect the outcome of the game.

Any hopes of another FS release or rerelease (or re-re-release since 20th aniversary edition) will lay in Interplay making money and :v: being willing...

Still, good job :v:!

I'm just saying, with this rebirth of the space sim, freespace might be considered once more... not only did FS2 fail because of lack of advertising, but it also lost out because the industry was slowing down. Just now, alot of good sims are comming out, and that is likely a boost of a possible official sequel...

Everyone wants a sequel to FS2 that is made by :v:... we don't give a sh*t about other companies' possible sequel...

Remember :v: is very much alive, but it's interplay, a company that did the game with :v:, that is deep in debt. I personally liked the old games from Interplay...

Well Bob-san, we apreciate your enthusiasm but as you can see, the FS license is in a limbo and most important of all...

Volition will never, EVER as long as they are owned by THQ, make another game with such a niche target such as a space sim... EVER!

Yes, it was a sad day in the world when :V: was bought by THQ.  It might be that never again will we see another British or American space sim of the Freespace/Wing Commander genre.

Oh quit it. It is best for all if :v: won't make a sequel even if it gets the chance.

1. Much has changed since :v: made FS1 and FS2, people have come and left.
2. If FS3 would be announced, either by :v: or another company. Do you seriously think it would live up to its expectations?
3. And there is always the possibility that FS3 would genuinely suck as a game.
4. The community has made and is still making unofficial sequels and other mods to FS2 and there is the SCP. Announcement and eventual release of FS3 more than likely would deal a serious blow to the community mod and SCP development.
5. FS2_Open and FRED2_Open is FS3 and much more than that. Because it is open-source, only the skills, time and imagination of the community developers is the limit.

If :v: does have an official continuation to the story, they don't need to develop a new game to tell the story.

Post by: asyikarea51 on September 23, 2006, 01:48:51 am
On the topic of space sims itself, the main things I didn't like about X2:TT and X3:TR were the sounds, the combat, the lack of afterburners, the demanding requirements, the so-so graphics (especially the cutscenes in X2), and IMO, the difficulty in modding it. Especially X2, that thing has some funny limitation in that one can't have more than six guns up front if the fighter has a back turret... :wtf:

Oops. I think I stated too many. My bad, my bad.  :sigh: :( :blah:

But I'm in with the background story... ...along with a manual like what you'd find in the games of old... ...but the X2 and X3 manuals are just inconsistent at times...  :nervous:

From the Tarr Chronicles website:

Quote
Game features:

    * Beautiful surrealistic space and spectacular battles
    * 9 unique missions, connected by a deeply detailed storyline
    * Create your own spaceship, combining various parts and equipment: more than 150 unique wings, engines, cannons, rockets and other subsystems
    * Companions which give helpful advice and fighting together with you

Those 9 missions better be really damn good.

They might not mean mission in the FS2 sense. Each mission might be like one of the Acts in FS2 (Which are admittedly so skillfully hidden that you'll only figure out that there are three acts by looking at the mission names!)

In this thread, will treat XBOX360?

Project Sylpheed (XBOX360) Square-Enix
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/sylph/

this title was released in japan several days ago.
It's very Arcade(Shoot'em up)-like and player plays very strong fighter and the story like 80's Japanese Anime, but this game is interesting.

There is a problem, sale schedule of foreign country is unknown, and the region of DVD is unknown too.

I had Sylpheed:the Lost planet for PS2. Was a top scroller. Excellent models, but the game itself looked mrah.

Infact, that sylpheed ship looks similar to the one I had. I only wish it was a 3d sim, and not a top shooter that turned 3d for cinematics.

Is this new sylpheed a top scroller?

Perhaps, it is so.
I think the country where XBOX360 doesn't sell most in the worlds is Japan.
and Space Sim is not popular in Japan.
(robots(eg. gundam) are more popular than Space Fighters in japan :sigh: and Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Galactica are minor in Japan. of course FreeSpace too! oh my god! :()

i wishes this game sale in foreign countries.

Project Sylpheed is Space Sim, not top scroller.
it's like Battlestar Galactiaca(XBOX), Space Interceptor(PC).
However, the missile is chiefly used for dogfight. this missile have many ammo(hundreds), swarm and multiple lock-on, like macross(robotech).
The enemy fighters is very weak and appears in large quantities, so it's a good target using missile.
non lock-on weapons is chiefly used for anti-large ship.
and, there are many weapons, and the player can setup it by briefing.

The player can use some special moves.
it's multiple shots(all weapons fire), kamikaze-attack, slo-mo.

A lot of in-game event is processed as Movie, it's a bad part.
