Title: Post your TBP DVD Questions and Comments here...
Post by: hip63 on September 06, 2008, 03:05:06 pm
Now that The Babylon Project DVD v1.0 is released, please post your questions and comments in this thread.

The download thread for TBP DVD is here:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/hip63/The%20Babylon%20Project/B516.jpg) http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56246.0.html

KNOWN ISSUE #1: On the ReadMe Menu, If  you click the Print Button,
it will launcher the installer instead of printing the ReadMe.

There are 2 ways to work around this:
1 - Simply click the Browser Button and print the readme from your browser
2 - Browse the root of the DVD and open the readme.txt file and print from notepad.

KNOWN ISSUE #2: In the DVD ReadMe infomation refers to Campaign Pack v1.1
THIS IS INCORRECT!
The actual Version Number for the Campaign Pack included on the DVD is v2.0

Thanks :)

seems like my DVD drive is to slow to handle install, music playback and menu at the same time
(the sounds starts to crackle then)

good job.

I thought that may be an issuse on some systems so I planned for it  ;7

On the main menu, in the upper right, you will see a small button with the ascii symbol for a B5 jumpgate, it looks like the - <*>, click it if you need to pause the video and music playback or you could just wait until the movie is done and then install. :)

Awsome!
And when can we look forward to the moddb link?  ;7 At least there you won't have to break it up into so many parts if any.  There is a 1.7 gig dl for the Project reality mod so obviously they let you upload large files.

Darklord42: the Torrent is the ISO and both read-me's. No multi-part rar files.

Well it's too big for ModDB to accept by about 50 meg.  I'll upload the split files there as well.  2 is better then 20.

Holy crap, guys! Get this in stores! Talk with Volition to see if you can even bundle FS2 and the Turey's installer into the DVD! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL! I would buy a copy for novelty sake!

OK the 2 file download links for FileFront have been added.  Over halfway done on the MegaUpload transfers but the links will have to wait until after I get some sleep.

Holy crap, guys! Get this in stores! Talk with Volition to see if you can even bundle FS2 and the Turey's installer into the DVD! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL! I would buy a copy for novelty sake!

Why in Yog-Sothoth's starboard side testicle would that be cool. Even if it were possible (which it isn't for two major copyright reasons and one commercial), it wouldn't be cool.

Why is it impossible? Well starting from legal issues, TBP uses FS2_Open to power it and bring it to life. That in a nutshell means it's a game that uses an open source engine and in a truncated form that means it can't be used for commercial purposes. Not to mention that Volition owns the original source code, which is still in the core of the engine, despite all the open source additions to it. I don't know exactly what licence FS2_Open is under (LGPL? Something else?) but rest assured that commercial exploitation would be pretty much against law and the spirit of the community around FS2_Open.

Second legal issue is that even though the intellectual property used to create The Babylon Project belongs to respective owners of Babylon 5 trademark (JMS, Warner Bros., possibly some others), the content of the game is still made by individuals (modeling, texturing, stories, mission design...) who have the copyright to their work, and anyone who wants to involve money into things like this must have an agreement with the creators - every single one - about compensation terms and whatnot... which I can't really see happening to be honest.

Commercially, it would most likely be a nightmare. Distribution of physical media would require entering a publisher in the mix, which would further complicate things. Most likely no one would want to publish the DVD either, and few people would be willing to buy it seeing how they can get it from the net as well. Even if physical media, if correctly packaged and marketed, could attract some members of the community, it would be unlikely to gather wide enough interest to be commercially viable.

Not to mention that a game that you can get free legally is a lot cooler than having to pay for same game...

Same points largely apply to Turey's installer, with the exception that vanilla FS2 is actually being re-distributed commercially in small scale already.

RELEASE: The Babylon Project DVD v1.0

Community Created Freeware Space Combat Simulator

Based on the Babylon 5 Universe created by J. Michael Straczynski using the FreeSpace Open-Source Engine.

Release Date: Sept 6, 2008

(snipped)

Is there any way I can get someone who has a decent-speed connection to make a DVD of this for me?  I've only got dial-up. I've tried to download this over a hotel "high-speed" internet connection but after 48 hours I had to abandon the attempt.

I love you guys soooo much right now  :D

My daughter and I just got into B5 6 months ago and have watched all the shows and movies and are now playing A Call To Arms miniatures game.

Just last night I was astonished to find a youtube vid of a B5 game by accident and discovered it was actually a Freespace2 conversion.

The thought of my daughter and I being able to play multiplayer missions in the B5 universe has driven me to build her a gaming computer, take a crash course in open source Freespace, learn how to work with torrents and figure out how to install all the TBP missions... all today!

Then I found the TBP DVD so I set it to d/l and ran off to pick up a dvd burner with lightspeed so we can have our discs labelled.

I may get some sleep but, bah, why stop now?

Thanks again for all your hard work and attention to detail!

Excellent Idea!  Then we can do the voice-overs too. Voice acting has always appealed to me as I've been acting the part of various characters since I started DM'ing back in 19... er... (lowers voice in embarrassment) 80.

On second thought maybe I shouldn't. I'm a perfectionist and a completionist with not enough time. :sigh:
The last time I tried writing levels/missions was for Monster Truck Madness and I LIVED it for 4 months straight.
My kids had forgotten who I was by then. "Hey ma... who's that red-eyed guy in pajamas sitting at Dad's computer? I wish he'd stop gibbering gleefully and drooling on Dad's keyboard."

ah... good times.

Thanks for all the hard work guys.

I have the DVD and like the idea of an install but when I went to print the Disc I found the black inner circle was too big for my Software and since I have no idea how to use photoshop I now have an unsightly black centre circle.
I was wondering if someone could redo TBP Disc Label.jpg so the centre hole is smaller than 22mm so that I will be able to burn full colour discs to give to all my friends here In South Australia.
Thanks for the help.

Almost forgot to say that I downloaded the file from Demonoid and have uploaded 2x and still going constantly at over 500Kbps. If possible I will continue to host this file until the next release.

Problems:

1)How do I install all the B5 Desktop items? The cursors, fonts, icons, sounds, images.

I can add them to the appropriate folders in windows but this doesn't give me a B5 desktop theme option.

2)How do I get OpenAL to work? I ran the OpenAL installer and it gave me the error 'Some OpenAL files were in use--a reboot will be required to complete installation'

I rebooted and ran the installer before doing anything else - same error.

I tried d/l a new copy of the OpenAL installer from the net - same error.

Thanks!

Thanks FUBAR, I had read and followed all the suggestions posted on the forums before making my post, to no avail.

BUT! I went over the creative labs OpenAL site and tried JUST ONE MORE TIME following the download link from the DEVELOPER tab instead of the OPENAL tab I had d/l from previously and this time it worked.

Makes no sense to me as they both link to the same file.

Off to fight the raiders!  :D

Well i hope its the right thread.

Anyone beat the Operation black sun? Can't beat it even on easy, so after trying the first mission, it let me skip to the second which is even more ridiculously hard.  My wingmen in the second mission get wiped out in a matter of minutes and barely make a scratch againt the centauri.

Great missions, but if Earthforce could take on a Centauri battlecruiser and a primus class with centauri fighters and i only have 8 fighters, we would kick everyones ass! Doesn't seem realistic? Any tricks?

Haven't had the time to try it yet but I have a few suggestions.  How many campaigns have you played so far?  You should start with the basics (EMW demo, Raider Wars) and work your way up to the more difficult campaigns.

Post by: Mike2000z28 on September 19, 2008, 08:38:46 am
Yeah i played those campaigns.  Just got done with the earth brakiri war.  I just find this campaign extremly difficult(granted using the keyboard) but still after you play it a million times and try different tactics, its ridiculous.  How can one figther take on(because your wingmen get destroyed quick) a primus cruiser, plus a battlecruiser, plus little centaur fighters? Cmon now.

Hey Everyone.  I am one of those who just downloaded the B5 DVD, and have signed up on the forums.

I am really excited about getting into B5 online, as I just got back into B5 by watching all of the 5 season episodes.

Now I can play the various missions, campaigns, and of course interact online with everyone.

I really do want to thank everyone who contributed to this project, and all of your hard work and time is greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks again!

Switch to the debug build in the launcher, run it, and attach the fs2_open.log from the data directory.

What drivers are you using? A lot of early Vista drivers had serious problems with OpenGL.

First off I am NOT using Vista, I have XP pro SP3.  Unfortunaly the game doesn't get far enough to create a fs2_open.log...  There might be a posiblity that the video card I have doesn't support OpenGL, thus I'm hosed...  :snipe: and unfortunalty too much has changed for me to "reverse port" the files back into retail FS2  :headz:

OK, I've got a question. Why the hell would you include an installer for an unsupported API? The Source Code Project is no longer developing FS2 Open for DirectX and hasn't been for somewhere around a year or so now. OpenGL is the only fully supported API.
Title: Re: Post your TBP DVD Questions and Comments here...

Cause some people can't use OpenGL and it doesn't hurt to have an emergency backup as long as it's clearly labelled as such and isn't installed by default.

Download.com is currently experiencing database problems from an upgrade.  TBP got botched on their site.  The file is missing and the download link is pointing to the forum.  Basically the whole TBP entry is screwed.  I've got a support ticket open on it.  You can get it from ModDB it's just 2 files instead of 1.

Download.com link is back up.  They must have know I was headed there to file another trouble ticket.

Anyway current download total just  between download.com and ModDB is now over 5500.

Is there an aggregate figure for total downloads thus far?  ~5,000 seems low, even if it has been a few years since the mod was really in the spotlight.

 :(

Have no way of knowing how many have downloaded from the other sites or torrents.

Just looked at FreeSpaceMods.net.  There are over 1000 more downloads of the installer and Mac/Linux build.

Possibly worth doing some more promotion.

that's the point!

We need more profile, cutscene-packed, voice-acted, 20+ mission long, perfectly written, extremely well balanced, action-packed campaigns that feature a great story. GO TO IT!

We need to have an online chat about our joint campaign. It ticks most of those boxes but I need some help tying up the plot threads in a coherent way.

This is working great for me with Vista, thanks so much for putting it all in one convenient DVD, it's been a blast so far from the little i've played it.

Just out of interest which one is the main Babylon Project campaign?  They all looked like short ones and dmeos form what I saw in the list, unless i'm just being blind and haven't paid enough attention.

Earth Minbari War Demo is the first one.  Raider Wars is the second.  After that they are all end user made so take your pick.

The dvd is too big for me to get, maybe that's part of the problem. Actually, v3.4b is still too big. Is there a change log from 3.3a?

No there isn't.  You have options for different file size downloads from the full DVD down to 100 meg chunks.  I had it broken down into 20 meg chunks but those seem to have been removed from mediafire.

Hello, I downloaded TBP DVD.

Everything works good, but there is some weird graphic issue.

Green mark of the Asimov (in the right corner) is not on the ship but moved somewhere next. When I am moving with ship, green mark moves up-down left-to-right etc. I know this should have something with fs_open. TBP Demo didn't have this issue. What can I do with this? Thanks.

TBP DVD is outdated, get Zathras from here and update it with that.  (Maybe ask on the HLP Discord server, see below).
