Title: normal maps not visible
Post by: Skarab on January 16, 2009, 12:55:00 am
Hey guys, fantastic job on the new vp's.  I have only one issue I haven't been able to find a solution for.  The game runs fine, all the models look great, only the normal maps are not visible.  I'm using 3.6.10 release, nightly build 20090115.  My video card is a ATI Radeon HD 3850 (AGP Version from Powercolor) using the latest drivers I can find for it.  Is this a known issue already?  If so a nudge to the right posts would be appreciated since I couldn't find any from searching the forums.  I remember a few months back a separate vp was needed for normal maps to be visible, but I was under the impression those should no longer be needed unless I am wrong there.  Again, thanks for the great job and any information on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Edit:  Just to be sure I double checked to make sure I actually had them enabled in the launcher settings, and the box is indeed checked so they should be enabled.

Could you run the 20090115 debug build and post the fs2_open.log file that will be generated to \freespace2\data\?

Ok done, but the log is pretty extensive... is there a particular section of it you're interested in seeing?  If so I'll trim out just the part you're looking for, otherwise I'll post the whole thing.

If there was a debug_filter.cfg file in \freespace2\data\ when you ran the debug build, move it away and run the debug again. Otherwise, just post the entire log, preferrably as an attachmént or with the "code" tags. We know where to look.

Your game isn't able to use GLSL (Open Graphic Library Shader Language), most likele because of

Code: [Select]
Unable to find extension "GL_ATI_shader_texture_lod".

Might be related to your operating system (Vista or XP?) and these particular drivers you're using, might be the card being AGP (which I doubt since it shouldn't affect the capabilities of the card past interface bandwidth limits), or it might be something more elusive. Most likely it is driver issue though. What OS are you running? You may want to try an older driver or Lobo can point you to a certain OpenGL driver DLL from older catalyst drivers (I can't bother searching it myself)... or you can extract the atiogl.dll from some older driver and slap it on your FS2 root directory and try what different versions of the OpenGL drivers do on your card.

XP sp3 is my operating system... I'm in the process now of getting the dll in the thread Lobo linked above and will let you know how it works out.  Keeping my fingers crossed :P

No dice.  Some particulars about my system:  The HD 3850 in my system is a AGP  version... there is a PCI-e version as well but as far as I know only Powercolor, HIS, and Sapphire make this agp version.  Mine is Powercolor.  The latest drivers listed on ATI's page will not work with this card, it requires something they call a "agp hotfix" that isn't listed on their driver page.  Whether or not that could have anything to do with this problem I have no idea.  I also noticed that the driver being used for this card as of now, provided on the dvd that shipped with it, has no atioglxx.dll file anywhere, instead it has one called atioglx2.dll (6.4.10.7659 dated 6/2/08).  I tried the atioglxx.dll file shown on the other thread in 2 locations:  in c:/games/freespace 2... putting it here had no effect whatsoever, unless it requires some action on my part to force the game to use that dll.  I also tried it in system32 both with and without the atioglx2.dll present.  With atioglx2.dll present alongside atioglxx.dll there is no effect at all, I assume the driver defaults to using the x2.dll and ignores the glxx.dll.   Without the x2.dll present alongside, the game won't even launch at all.  now I'm at a brick wall, looking like I'm just not going to get normal maps with this card :P
