Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
Wait, is this one of those tiny little laptops? I express my doubts against your plan, since I'd suspect OpenGL support, for starters, hasn't been a top priority when selecting the components and writing drivers.

Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
first of which one is it and is it a windows or linux version, and what size is your hard drive....

i have managed to get fs running on a asus eeepc linux( using ubuntu variant and eeepclinuxos but not on the asus xandros lite version), which has a slower processer and as far as i know the same graphics card, (intel 915 thingy) i have 2gb ram and a 4gb internal ssd and a fast 4gb thumb drive , 4gb sd card
but i tend to run freespace on an external 80gb 2.5" hd (ubuntu studio with eeepc kernel

basic problems on eeepc

you need to run everything at the most basic level, no mediavps etc and all graphics at low level)

so if your running a linux acer one , try to find another os tweaked for your acer or install (hits my self) windows ( ok i said it)

remeber that a full install of fs can (with all of the different mods can eat up 20gb, not including babylon project, btrl and wing commander saga)

so please post your acer specs , os , hard disc, graphics card , and if the atom processor is underclocked or not and ill do my best to help

also try google ......acer one freespace games etc im sure you will find someone who has done it......

Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
Yes, FSO works somewhat on A1, but suffers from the graphics problems described in this thread:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,55592

I'm getting about 20..50 FPS when running without any of the MVPs, 640*480 with detail settings 2 steps down from the max (debian Lenny).
Now just waiting for Intel to fix the driver...

Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
sorry, shoulda mentioned the specs to start with.  its the following

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition- English/French
   Processor: Intel Atom Processor N270 (512KB L2 cache, 1.60GHz, 533MHz FSB)
   Memory: 1GB (512MB onboard/512MB SODIMM slot) DDR2 533 SDRAM
Storage: 160GB hard drive, multi-in-one card reader, SD Card reader
TFT Display: 8.9" WSVGA (1024X600), Acer CrystalBrite Technology
Graphics: Intergrated Interl Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Communication: 802.11b/g WLAN 10/100 LAN webcam
   Color: Onyx black
   Battery: six-cell

and i know that everyone loves FSO, but has anyone tried the good ole retail FS?  if i can't have all the new goodies, i don't mind the old ones...

FSO doesn't equal to "best possible graphics". That would be the MediaVPs. And everyone has stated that you really should stick to retail level graphics if you want to be able to play reasonably.

I'd suspect that using the FSO engine would be the better choice, since it will probably run more likely than the retail engine.

Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
Laptops are notorious for being anti-gaming generally  :(

Thor, your computer specs are quite similar to mine. On the 3.6.10 Mediavps I had immense difficulty playing with asteroids and 6-10 ships on my screen at any one time, but with the 3.6.8 Zeta Mediavps, usually there was no problems, except for Battle of Endor type battles.

However, stick to the FS2 Retail for maximum gameplay experience like Lobo says, if the gameplay is what you are really seeking.  :)

Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
*scratchhead* I don't think that is exactly what Lobo said..
That said, with retail you'd get stable D3D support, which will not have the graphics problems Intel OGL has (I assume).

Well that "Intergrated Interl" card sounds like crap.

Intel graphics cards in general suck. But the color being onyx black has a decent chance of making up for that.

yes, the onyx black will triumph at the end of the day.  (what, so i copied and pasted, gimme a break :p )

well thanks for the advice.  I'll give it a go and see what i can do.  Agreed that the intel 950 isn't a graphics power house, but surely it can run a game from 1999 in some fashion.  and yes, in the end i am after the core gameplay, the graphical bells and whistles are purely added bonuses i can live without on this (don't you guys worry, i got a good desktop rig for that  :p )

I'll be sure to post how it goes.

Re: FS2 on an Acer Aspire One
ok, so far the demo (waiting on a portable disc drive to install full retail fs2) seems to work almost flawlessly, although works best at 800x600.  a few things seemed a bit more stretched then i remember, but otherwise, all is good!  will update once full version is installed.

I assume that thing has a widescreen monitor. Unless using a forced 800x600 (with black bars at the sides), the picture is sure to be stretched.

I have a fairly old subnotebook with a comparable configuration (Sony TR2A: Pentium M 1GHz, Intel Media 82855 graphics accelerator, 1 GB RAM). Latest incarnation of Saga runs reasonably well (15-40 fps), I experienced no glitches or slowdowns. That being said, I believe, that 845 chipset is slightly better when it comes to OpenGL support.
