"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

i still dont see any difference between the two examples.

Oh you still believe in fairy tales like Santa, the Easter Bunny, and free market competition principles?

is there something wrong with CTRL+SCROLL that people cant blow things up in there browser when they cant read it or something, predefined width is nicer because it doesn't adjust when you shrink or grow the page.

Yes. That is wrong. You shouldn't have to fiddle with each and every web page so that the zoom is correct. If you can't read it, set your font correctly, which is a different issue. Predefined width is lame because it doesn't adjust when the rest of the world starts using multimegapixel monitors (I'm up to 3x3MP, and loving it.)

Isn't this an incredibly simple change?  It would take me all of 30 seconds to try out each of them on my own SMF v2 RC4 forum.

Uhm,,..... Now that I see how it turns out, when the forum is stretched all over, I must say I don't like it that way.  :nervous: It's very uncommon, hopefully I get used to it :)

I know this reply is a little late but I see an issue with the flexible width option... reading from left to right on a monitor that displays 1920px across isn't ideal for human eyes, neither for 1366px but its easier :). I know I can re-size my browser but would it just be better to put the content as a fixed width for the screen stylesheet. A great article to read on the matter is Ideal line length for content and note that the article is very easy to read for the eyes  and yes I know it's an old article :p

Yup, I'm quite aware of the whole optimal line length for reading issue (as a web designer, I'd better be!). Unfortunately for that aspect of things, the majority here like to make use of space, even at the expense of easy readability. I'm considering making this a user-selectable toggle - if I can figure out how. :p

I knew you were :D... but I've discovered in life that its always good to have evidence to backup what you say :p

That would be awesome . Would this feature be integrated into the forum settings thus one change applies to all threads and forums, or would it be selectable per thread or forum?

Definitely a site-wide toggle; per thread would be annoying. At the very least, I think I can make it cookie-based (3rd-party; not using any of SMF's own cookies), but I'd prefer to figure out how to add it as a custom user preference so it's tied to user profiles as opposed to a specific browser.

I really mean no offense, but seeing how much is still left done with the theme itself, I don't think that is feasible to do and maintain. It would definitely have to be done in a form of an SMF modification, akin to those available for download in the official site. I'd just go with one solution that is aesthetically pleasing, suitable for forums and accepted by majority and stick with it.

Well, the only reason I'm so open to implementing it is because I actually did have exactly that feature implemented for the mainpage for a while, so the essentials are already done. But you're right that other theme elements have priority.
