http://orange.half-life2.com/ (http://orange.half-life2.com/)
So who's getting it? I can't wait to try out Portal.
-
I've never played any Half-Life games. But I want to play Portal. End result? I don't spend money.
-
Portal looks absolutely stunning, I really can't wait for it to come out - even if I do already have HL2 and HL2:EP1
-
If you got it through Steam you can give those two to someone else.
-
I never got Ep1, so, I'll probbaly pick this up.
-
Anyone be willing to donate 512 Mb of PC133 RAM and a P4 3+ Ghz? I have borrowed HL2 from a friend before and it played fine except for excruciatingly long load times. Do you think that Portal will cause any problems?
-
anyone want a free copy of HL2 and Ep1?
-
I'll have it. :P
-
me.
[/nonchalant]
...
-
So, if you already have Half Life 2 and Episode 1, you have to either pay for crap you already own or pay extra to get them separately?!
Tossers!
-
I preordered the Orange Box and I have to say, TF2 itself is worth the 45 bucks. I haven't been addicted to a game this much since I played FS2. Then we got Peggle Extreme which is pretty awesome in itself. Very entertaining for just two games; it's definitely worth preordering and saving 5 bucks. I'm already extremely satisfied but Portals and EP2 are still sitting there waiting for the release date on Steam. The Orange Box is the best thing since sliced bread and of course, FSO.
TF2 is just pure fun. They designed the game to be fun and less about competition. Even the models look silly and hilarious. This game is just built for pure fun. All the classes are fun to play and at least one of them will suit your gaming style.
Not to mention, you also get HL2 and EP1 as well. And if you already own them, you can even give them to a friend of yours. Preorder it now and get Peggle Extreme while saving 5 bucks.
-
I preordered it to and must say that its definetly worth the money I think it is worth the money just for TF2 and then you get portal and Episode 2 so I cant wait until tomorrow.
/Dice
-
Pre-ordering FTW!
-
The classes in TF2 make me giggle. Especially when they're on fire. They say such funny things.
The whole game just oozes style. I've never seen anything quite like it before.
-

I pre-order at Bestbuy (on the 5th), they promise to have it and to not oversell, and when I check my order, they say "Out of Stock"!!
-
Portal rocks ...... the voiceover alone makes it worth playing :)
-
Portal and TF2 and both very entertaining.
I started playing HL2 ep1, also entertaining.
-
Just pre-ordered the "real" box today. I can't say I like not having stuff on CD so I'm going to wait for the hard-copy release.
-
HL2:EP2 kicked ass (combine ass) espeically the last sequense against the striders WOW is all I have to say.
-
The final battle left me shaking for about 30 minutes afterward since there was so much adrenaline in my system.
-
The final battle was a bit too arcadey for my tastes. Oddly enough Ep 1 seemed to me to have better design in general, though the plot and environments of Ep 2 were better.
TF2 has good art direction but not really my sort of thing. Portal though... very well done. It'd be fun to do a "mage" sort of game with the Source engine. Gravity gun and portal spells as the only two weapons. Use the cinematic physics to make buildings and such destructable. A multiplayer game sort of like Magic Carpet:
Claim areas for mana which is used to fuel the spells.
Anyway just imagine uprooting a tree and tossing it at someone through a portal ;)
Ideally fluid physics and speedtree would be nice features. (opening a portal in a river and seeing it pour through)
-
A multiplayer game sort of like Magic Carpet:
I miss Bullfrog. :(
-
I love thinking with portals.
Oh, and THE CAKE IS A LIE.
-

:wtf:
I still haven't received mine yet.
-
THE CAKE IS A LIE
THE CAKE IS A LIE
THE CAKE IS A LIE
THE CAKE IS A LIE
THE CAKE IS A LIE_______
-
I take it I still need Steam to play this? :(
-
Nope. Not if you buy it from a store.
-
Incorrect, you still do need Steam to play it, you just don't need Steam to buy it (you can buy it from a store, but if you install it on your computer Steam will be installed with it).
-
Piracy then... :(
-
Can't, Steam is required to run the game, it's heavily built into the game's architecture.
Also, HLP does note condone the discussion of piracy (obligatory anti-piracy remark). :p
-
too bad it's $50... I don't particularly have that laying around these days :(
-

Ah, my bad :p

I get it now!
It's true:

THE CAKE IS FOR REAL!!!1

Any chance they'll break it apart after some time? I've heard good things about portal, but HL2 bored me to the point where I couldn't finish it, so I'm unwilling to spend any money on it.
-
Why the **** does Australia get the ****ing Orange Box one ****ing week later than the rest of the ****ing world!? It's not ****ing fair! ****!!
-

You can buy them separate from Steam.
-
Speaking of Portal, Rooster Teeth just put out a HILARIOUS comic about it:
-
too bad it's $50... I don't particularly have that laying around these days :(
do you have half life 2?
if not, give me your steam ID or email address... i have the game, along with counterstrike source, as 'gifts', and i'll send them to you :) :) :)
-
actually i'm lying, i don't have counterstrike source; i have half life 2, and then half life 2: episode 1.
means you only have to buy episode 2 :) but HL2 and EP1 should keep you busy for a week or two
-
portal is just fun, even my sister enjoys playing.
-
I have HL2, yes. But not Portal, Ep2, TF2 or Ep1.
-

This is kinda twisted a bit, as there is no "out" portal, but still funny.
-

ok message me, i'll send you my EP1 gift, and i'll buy EP2 for you
-
I just completed Portal...
Excellent. Just excellent.
At first - with only 19 challenges - I thought it was going to be far too short. However imagine my surprise when I discovered the truth. Having sat down around challenge 16 thinking "I'll be done in half an hour" another 2 hours have passed and I've now finished. The voice acting and commentary was very very well done. Part of the story took its pages a little blatantly from the likes of Cube and Resident Evil but never mind, because the usage and implementation of Portals really did bring a new and interesting perspective on getting from A to B. Where I started the game I was running down corridors - by the end I was using portals to skip the long distances and just jump from point to point.
Great stuff. Hopefully it'll see lots of user expanded content. Now on to Episode 2!
-
i'm on ch.11 of portal (looks like a tough one).
took me 20 minutes to get through the first 10, but i can tell they're definately getting harder. some of them were total no brainers, but some had me thinking/experimenting for a couple of minutes :-/
you're going to like EP2
-
your gonna like ch 19 LMAO :)
-
I liked the one where you used portals to get to increasingly higher platforms. ;7
Did you know that you can donate one or more of your vital organs to the Aperture Sciences girls self-esteem fund?
-
I miss my Weighted Companion Cube :(
-
I euthanized mine quicker than any previous test subject.

Aperature Science... we do what we must... because we can...

for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying until you run out of cake.

Turret: Come over here.
*BANG*BANG*BANG*
Turret: Are you still there?
*gets knocked over*
Turret: No hard feelings...
-
*Turret gets picked up*
Turret: Please put me down!
*Turret is dropped"
Turret: Is anyone there?
*Turret gets picked up again*
Turret: Who's there?!
-
But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying until you run out of cake.
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive.
-
I'm not even angry...
I'm being so sincere right now...
-
Even though you broke my heart
and killed me.
-
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.

There's no need to quote them all. That's a subtle hint, by the way.
-
"Please note that we have added a consequence for failure, any contact with the chamber floor will result in an unsatisfactory mark on your official record, followed by death"
"Remember that time we tried to kill you by putting you in fire and you were like NO WAY? That was great."
Man, I've got to play it again. Brilliant, JUST brilliant.
-
Wheeeeee

I took all the turrets and cameras from the android level and threw them into the Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grill.
-
With a portal? Or you walked over? This game is awesome...
-
Portal alone was worth the $50 price tag for Orange Box IMO. Best game dialogue evar.
I can't wait for some user made levels to be possible, though I'm sure it'll take some time before people make some genuinely good maps.
-
Yeah, most of the user-maps don't seem to be very free-form. I'd be happier with maps that had a combination of easy (i.e. you can portal everywhere if you really wanted to) but very free-form puzzles where you can do all sort of interesting solutions.
-
I wonder is there a way to play custom maps on any of the console versions?
-
Portal looks very nice from the comments I'm seeing, although I don't want to pay $50 for that alone as I don't care about the other stuff. I'll probably get it if they drop the price later on. I have too many other games on my backlog right now anyway. :p
-
It's available single on Steam.

For those who want it.
-
Enjoyed both games lots.
-
vyper: x2 :)

"Be adequate!!"
-
Holy ****! HL2:E2 is 10 Gb! Anyone want to donate a 100+ Gb ATA100 HDD?
-
You guys and your Portal credits song had me laughing my head off. I love that game. :D

Well, he's got a girl to cosplay with him...
Screaming fangirls aren't all that hard to come by, son.
-
Yeah, but screaming Half-life fangirls?
-
I still cannot shake off the feeling that the orange box is what we Germans call "Abzocke".
I won't pay that much money for games I already HAVE! I would have bought the Black Box, but (SURPRISE!) Valve cancled it to make even more money. And I thought Mircosoft was terrible...
-
Well, you CAN just buy Portal, TF2, and Episode 2 seperately, but that all comes out to about $80. Plus, you can give your extra copies of HL2 and Episode 1 to friends/family as Christmas gifts. It's not all as bad as I think you think it is.
-
I think they're just trying to 'encourage' you to buy it on Steam. They make more money that way too y'know ;)
Ahh, but Portal is awesome; For me the best game in the pack!
I actually went out and bought it! (And they think piracy COSTS them sales...)
So now I have a licence to play my Pirate (Arr!) Steam-free version of Portal! \o/
And the box is still in shrinkwrap so I can sell it easier later :D
I wish I'd played EP2 before playing Portal 'tho... EP2 SUCKS if you play it right after playing Portal :(
It's the song. It just won't get out of your mind!
I kept humming it through the course of the game "This was a triumph! D, Bm, D, Bm..."
-
Is it just me, or were the makers of Ep2 and Portal feeling just a little bit... psychotic?
-
Well, I decided hell with it, and actually bought portal. Cool game...but wow, is it short. Took me about 3 1/2 hours to beat the story mode.
Still, it's a puzzle game, and a damn fun one, so chances are there will be homemade puzzles.
-
Is it just me, or were the makers of Ep2 and Portal feeling just a little bit... psychotic?
I'm convinced someone on the dev team for Portal was a /b/tard.
I mean really? Delicious Cake?
-
or everyone, maybe.
-
Just spent the weekend playing episode 2. Good stuff; certainly wasn't a let down in terms of the previous installments and has definately left me waiting for the final episode. It was fairly easy though, even on hard. And the end was a bit of a downer. Now I just have to give the commentry a run through.
Looking forward to portal too from what I hear bout it.
-
I'm convinced someone on the dev team for Portal was a /b/tard.

Actually, they wrote for Old Man Murray. (http://www.oldmanmurray.com/)
-
There's dedication, and then there's...
Oh god. It suddenly struck me that that's probably what they would look like in real life. That's really sort of depressing.
-
Nah, one of the biological anthropologists in the department here looks more like Alyx Vance then that person :p (and goes by Ally oddly enough)
-
Did the delicious cake thing come from Portal, or did 4chan start it?
-
4chan started it long before Portal was out.

I use a lance made of Dragonforce to pierce the box and gain access to the delicious cake therein.

It repels everything.

The cake is floating. Dragonforce doesn't float, it's too heavy.
-
"Scotty, lock on to that cake and beam it out of there!"
-
"Scotty, lock on to that cake and beam it out of there!"
Well that's just preposterous. Totally unfounded in reality...
"Daedalus, this is Atlantis. Scan for the cake and have Hermiod beam it straight to the control room."
-
Me loves cake, and the end song form Portal. Did you know the woman who voices the AI in portal also does Overwatch from HL2? :D <3
-
Did you know the woman who voices the AI in portal also does Overwatch from HL2? :D <3
Or that she also does Opera. Which, for some strange damn reason, is kinda sexy. :nervous:
-
Portal was like a really, REALLY fun rollercoaster.
all over too quickly. But apparently, how quickly (or how slow) you finish Portal depends on your IQ.
As for Episode 2, it was hella good, if albeit more system-demanding then HL2/ep 1. Especially the in-game 'cutscenes' (the lagged me like you wouldnt believe)
TF2 got pretty boring pretty quickly too (like any good multiplayer game, its full of bad idiots)
-
I finished it in an hour and 45 minutes. My friend who thinks he's smart took that long to get to Testchamber 11.
-
Over two days (I tend to play games less now i'm actually "SHOCK" growing up) it took me about 50 minutes each day.
I like the turrets, it took me a while to bring myself to hurt them.....
-
I know, they're so...polite.
-
I just got Vanilla Crazy Cake. :D

Yes! The turrets, geez...

That's... terrible!!
-
"No don't shoot
it's me
noo"
"oh no why did they program me to feel pain?"
:( They're so cute when you KILL THEM
Aperture Science would like to take a moment and remind you that Android Hell is a real place where you will be sent at the first sign of disobedience <3

That's... terrible!!
It's VG Cats. What else did you expect?

I didn't have any expectations since I don't follow them.

I have a question. Is Steam evil?
-
Yes, but it's less of an issue if you have broadband.
-
I have a question. Is Steam evil?
Pretty damn handy but I'm a heretic
-
Steam is not resource or internet-efficient. I don't get why big companies don't bother optimizing their software. It's like "It works - It's done".
-
Is there any way around it?
-
http://forums.prophecy.co.za/f4/how-make-steam-offline-mode-work-5301/
Don't know if it still applies. What it does is makes it so that you only have to internetify it once a week or so.
-

It's actually just the VGCats guy.

Steam is not resource or internet-efficient. I don't get why big companies don't bother optimizing their software. It's like "It works - It's done".
Optimization requires lots of time and skilled coders, which translates into money.
You think they actually care beyond that?
As long as consumers buy it, they'll do as little as they can get away with. Look at Microsoft if you want another prime example!

You say that like it's a bad thing. What, you want Valve to waste plenty of money and man-hours on optimizing Steam when it already gets the job done, taking time away from development of their games?
-
Alright, if there's no legal way to do without Steam... then I have another question. Does Steam affect the performance of a PC overall (malware), or just when it's in use (badware)?
-
I'm all for digital distribution, I got the first season of Sam & Max that way. Steam just rankles me to my very core with it's model of online distribution though. I want to get something and be done, rather then having to constantly connect for no damn reason. Steam is why I don't own Half-Life 2, because it's a freaking requirement when you pick up a box copy! Everyone hates Microsoft's stupid "Windows Genuine Advantage" because it presupposes you're a pirate, so I can't fathom why designing retail software that requires constant "phoning home" to play offline is a viable model.
I have no idea if it impacts performance when you're not running an application that uses it, as I won't allow it anywhere near my system.
-
Steam is only "badware".
-
the cake is a lie!
also i miss the WCC. :(
edit: the ingredients for the cake would kill you if the cake did exist. :sigh: :ick:
-
:wtf:
-
listen to blue Glados eye speech. enough rhubarb, sediment shaped sediment, fish shaped sediment, rhubarb on fire, needle injectors and 18 pounds of cake mix to kill anything. theres more but i don't feel like looking for it all.
-
If you get yourself a file-extractor, you can dive into the game files and extract all the audio clips from GLADOS, as well as the Still Alive song and all the other sounds etc. of course.
They're well worth listening to if you ask me.
-
i've got the orange box on xbox360 can't rip anything out. =(
-
Ah, well give me a shout if you really want all the audio files that GLADOS says. But only if you really want them, I'm very lazy :p
-
iight :)
-
SHOUT!
-
So is there any way to play Portal, or any of the HL episodes offline? I restarted Steam in offline mode, but it says I still need to be online.
-

The reason this happens, I assume, is so you can't download a game to several computers and turn them on offline.

That only makes sense if you purchased your copy via Steam in the first place. You expect a retail box for an MMO to mention how it requires an active internet connection to play, it doesn't make any sense at all for single player titles played exclusively offline to require that though. Valve is essentially forcing Steam down our throats, even if we're not buying things from them online.
-
It's a viable model because Valve is the industry's darling child. Everyone loves them, and anyone who dislikes them is immediately shunned - Valve is probably the only developer that could have pulled Steam off, and they STILL had to push it hard.
-
So is there any way to play Portal, or any of the HL episodes offline? I restarted Steam in offline mode, but it says I still need to be online.
Unplug your internet connection.
Steam does have an offline mode for when no internet is available, and it does work (I've used it). That said, if you're trying to force it offline when you have an internet connection, it's probably not going to work.
-
Alright, if there's no legal way to do without Steam... then I have another question. Does Steam affect the performance of a PC overall (malware), or just when it's in use (badware)?
Neither. Steam's resource usage when running an application is actually minimal - it only uses significant resources when running as background without a full-screen application (e.g. game) active. So, turn off the start with windows functionality and only launch Steam when you're playing a game.
-
It's a viable model because Valve is the industry's darling child. Everyone loves them, and anyone who dislikes them is immediately shunned - Valve is probably the only developer that could have pulled Steam off, and they STILL had to push it hard.
Why would they even think of doing this in the first place?
-
A split between combating piracy and eliminating distributors, probably heavily favoring the latter. Plus, you figure if someone buys a retail game that needs steam, then there's at least one person who might look at your online catalog and buy something.
-
They don't want piracy and they want to keep 100% of the profits from their games, which they can't do with a distributor (who keep a large portion of the profits for themselves).
Steam does do great things for indie developers though (aside from the fact that they're linked to that damn program) - I talked with the lead of Red Orchestra, and he said that the great thing about Steam is that if they publish on it, they keep the rights to the universe/license and to any further games, unlike with a publisher, who gets all of that (as we in the FS community are acutely aware).
-

I would say it's more about hitting the used game market than having anything to do with piracy. It's well known by now that Steam is as useless as anything else in stopping pirates, but the used game market would take a chunk out of their sales and Steam locks a game down to the original purchaser, which is good from Valve's point of view.
-
Whoa. I just bought the rest of the Orange Box, and man, is it fun. (I previously only owned Portal.) I'm partway through Episode 2, in the chapter "Under the Radar". And I am a terrible Spy.
-
"Dang, a spy's been sapping my sentries!"

Team Fortress 2 is the only thing in it that I dislike.

Join the club. I didn't like that game, I found it too chunky. (could be that I have to play it at 800*600 and low detail, maybe I'll try it out when I get a new PC)
-
Same for me really but I like the gameplay.
-
Well, Team Fortress 2 isn't on the same level as Half-Life 2, or Portal, but it's still an excellent game that offers variety. It's a welcome break from the pervading monotony of COD4.
Or, maybe I should just play on less-crowded servers.
-
I remember finding a /b/ themed server. It was full of lulz.
-
I remember finding a /b/ themed server. It was full of lulz.
I pity you.
-
I know... but it was funny at 3 in the morning.
-
... The 4chan servers are all I play on, because I can't be bothered to take the game seriously.
-
What servers are they?
-
I always just sort the server list by name. There are usually 2 or 3. They'll be in the 4's...
-
They'll be in the 4's...
Really?
-
I finally got the Orange Box a couple of weeks ago and it runs great on my new pc. Episode Two was a bit short, but it was so well done and intense that length was well worth the sacrafice. Portal was fun and very amusing. I laughed my ass off at a few parts. Now I'm waiting for Comcast to get off there rears and build that two mile cable line to my house so I can play TF2.
-
Ouch man. Ouch.

You could always spend $1000.00+ per month for a pure wireless connection.
....
I've seriously seen ads for those. :doubt:
-
EV-DO is only like 50$ a month where I live, and it's as fast as DSL/Cable in some places. That's about 20$ more than Cable, if you can manage.
And I know that AT&T has it, so Comcast probably does.
-
Most ISPs have Cable nowadays. In rural areas though, it's patchy.
-
I live in a rural area, and cable's been here for a while, but it's not used by Bell. And since my dad gets 40% off Bell services (he works for them) it was a no-go until about '05.
-
Good stuff. I suppose I'm lucky since I live on a tech-heavy college campus.

The only choices I have for broadband is Satelite and At&t's data connect plan which is something called either hsdpa or hsupa and it uses normal cell towers. Satelite is not going to happen. It is too expensive, horrible lag, and the stupid so called fair access plan (very limited). The At&t thing would be good, a 3.6 mb per second cell card. They want a two year contract though and if cable or something newer and better comes through here I will not be stuck with that, especially for 60 dollars a month.
