Weapon selection - Primary weapon animations lag me to death
I think the title says it all, is there anything I can do (besides having a better computer) to prevent this? It makes choosing weapons a pain. I ticked the "Use models for weapon selection" on the launcher but that only works for missiles.

Also I should note the game runs really well even on my system. The only noticeable slowdowns I had were while playing Wings of Dawn (lots of stuff flying around).

I should say that I'd be more than happy with any fix, even removing those animations completely.

First make sure both your desktop and the launcher are set to 32bit color.  Second move it out of program files to c:\games\Freespace 2.  Finally check the FAQ for the x1650 series cards.  There is a workaround for them.  It's basically an issue with that series of video cards.

Setting desktop and launcher to 32bit made no difference.
I read the FAQ before installing FS2 and I already applied the fix for this series of ATI cards. I'd rather not move the whole game to a new directory (unless it's really necessary) because it takes a long time and it'll probably cause problems.
I should say again that this is the only thing that seems to be malfunctioning for me, the game runs well without noticeable slowdowns.

Is there any way to remove the weapon videos from the weapon selection screen? That's all I need -.-

Remove Weapon Choice 3D and the Advanced Mediavps. Would that change anything?

It's best to have FreeSpace in Games/FreeSpace/ because long directories seem to cause problems. It shouldn't be that hard to move it. Just copy and paste.

Unticking Weapon Choice 3D makes the game load videos for secondary weapons as well, which means those lag me too.
Removed advanced mediavps, made no difference.

Remove the AnimGlows as well. And has it ever been fast for you? If not, it might be because of the build. Also, you really should move FreeSpace to another directory. Yours is much too long. Disable the mediavps to make sure it's not that that is slowing you down.

Yeah, you should consider moving your folder to something like c:/games/freespace2 cuz long names can cause issues.

About the .ani animations, well... i had that issue for a long time too, never found a way to fix it, i think somewhere along the line the way they work got changed and resulted in them being sluggish on older systems, but i would have thought your system to be good enough for that. I hope someone with better technical knowledge can look at this and give you an answer that does help.

I moved the game to C:\Freespace2 and tried without mediavps with no change :(

It's been a while since I last played FS2 but I'm 90% sure I did not have hits problem before because it's really annoying and I would remember.
