I think someone purged them in anticipation of replacing them with new art but that never happened, so I think uh, the placeholders should be put back for now.

So is there anything I can do to get the portraits in the latest version or am I done for?

I'd say just grab a non-knossos version and replace the visual
.vp files inside the knossos version with the non knossos version's.
New art is currently being worked on but I can't give an exact ETA for when it will be fully complete.
