Title: sun glitches?
Post by: decembered on September 05, 2007, 10:20:45 am
Hello, Babylon 5 team, and THANK YOU! for the great job you have done and keep doing.

I'm not sure, if anyone have already posted about some glitches discovered (and even less sure, are those indeed glitches), so excuse me, if I'm wrong... Anyway, in TBP 3.4:

- Sun seems to *move* as the pilot pitches his vessel, move over surrounding nebula. I've got some brain rupture trying to figure out if such an optical illusion is possible in, ahem, reality, - yet still think it isn't. Most strange it looks, really.

- A some sort of a funny glitch occured after I have launched Earth-Minbari War campaign, haven't complete its first mission and switched to mission simulator (single missions-> boarding party), where I have chose Minbari fighter as my ship. Tried this. Came back to Campaign. And... Found myself flying around in a Nial  ;7 Minbari-busting was piece of cake then, surely. Yet since ship selection is disabled it wasn't really possible to switch to usual Aurora. Next mission was okay, of course.

- At least once I've caught a female voice messaging from a Centauri ship, - with a Centaurian male in the message animation (Raider Wars campaign).

Anyway those are petty glitches in comparison with that GRAND work you have done so far. Personally, I think that among other Freespace TCs Babylon Project is a new sheriff in the town.

Thanks a lot again!

K, since no one seems to be replying, I could give you one answer. The sun glitch thing is something I've noticed also in FS. So I guess it's just a feature. Or a glitch, whatever. It does get worse if you try to play in widescreen so just stick to 4:3.

Don't know about the other points you mentioned. Maybe someone does. Still,
:welcomeblue:

I don't think it's a glitch. You seem to be describing lens flare to me.

Actually, it is (in my humble estimation) some kind of glitch/feature in the way the different background elements are rendered. I wouldn't call it a bug since it works without errors, but erroneusly.

My own description - the background retail stars and sun bitmaps don't move at the same rate when you turn your ship, and it's not sun glare/lens flare either - the whole bitmaps seems to be moving in front of the background. It's distressing and annoying and gets even more pronounced if you use other than retail field of view settings, but its present on default one as well.

I would guess it has something to do with background stars being more like part of the HUD than background elements, since other elements on HUD (like subspace nodes) move excactly like the stars in relation to the sun bitmaps... I don't remember right now if the planet backgrounds do the same, though. Probably not since they are effectively the same as nebulas and everyone would notice if nebulas were swaying around the place all the time.

Also, I don't remember if it's present against a skybox star background or not. Probably is.

As mentioned by those above me, this sounds remarkably similar to a problem I experienced with FS2. When turning the ship/camera, the starfield and nebulae don't seem to scroll at quite the same rate.

My, I've forgotten 'bout this topic already.

Yes, you're right, this glitch occurs in FS2 Open as well: stars and nebula 'move' at different rate as you move your ship/camera around, as if stars and sun are WAY closer to the viewer than nebulas and planets. Perhaps some rendering mishap in the FS2Open code.

This issue has been fixed (to certain extent... the way I understood it is that the problem that causes the glitch is still there, but it's re-compensated on the code so it now renders almost if not exactly as it should be) along with the HUD widescreen mis-alignment fix, but I don't quite know how those builds behave with TBP. Or rather, how TBP data is handled by the builds. AFAIK they *should* work but as I haven't tried, I won't be saying anything for sure.

These builds are found for example in the Recent Builds subforum of the Source Code Project forum here on Hard Light (although, good luck trying to find an Inferno build so that all the ships will be used by the game).

Also,
