Yeah I know.  I've tried running it again a couple times with the same effect.  I am installing "The Works".  When I manually navigated to one of the sites it was trying to reach, I got a 404 error, and working from teh root site I eventually got to a page showing files - except there were none, just a link back to the parent directory.

That's not a problem with the Installer; it's the problem with the people who set up those file downloads.  The Installer merely goes where it's told, and if people let their hosting die, the Installer has no control over that.

Now granted the Installer should probably have a more helpful error message.  But the only way to get those files, if they're no longer hosted, is to find someone who downloaded them previously.

This is true, its not the installer's fault, already knew that .  The only thing directly related to the installer would be if I had an out-of-date version, which I don't believe is the case, I downloaded it last week.  And only putting error messages in a log in order to not interrupt program flow is perfectly understandable.  Also, now doing more searching, apparently there is an offline version of this installer, so I'm going to give that a try.

Akshully, there is no offline version of this installer, but indeed there are alternative methods for installing FSO. The stickied threads here (and on the support board) include valid installation methods, and each one has links to the other ones.

I always get the installer from either page 1 of this thread, or I link to tureys webpage and download it from there, which transfers me right back here anyway LOL

It would be kind of cool if one of the coding geniuses here could code a bittorrent client into Turey's... it's Java, so I know it can be done, the open-source client Azureus (now Vuze) is Java-based.  Then we could have volunteers run the client in SuperSeeding (always seeding and prioritize peers that can download and share faster to increase total speed) mode and just have the installer download from the hosted sites and if it gets a 404 on all alternates, finish what it can by regular means and initialize a torrent download of the rest of the files.  When the installer finishes, give the client an option to seed for a specified amount of time (none thru Merry Christmas forever keep it alive always) or data upload amount.

Just a thought.

I tried downloading a game once ( free) from a bit torrent and I wound up with a couple of nasty little programs that the computer owner didn't' know he had.Another time I used bit torrent I downloaded another game ( free as well) but I got the game owners personal preferences also, so I spent three days redoing the game

Bittorrent would be a good idea, but it requires a consistent amount of people seeding the content. Unless you have lots of seeders, your download speed will be lower or equal to regular hosted downloads.

At any rate, a rewrite of the installer is planned. We'll see what distribution method makes the most sense then.

They didn't know how to do it... if you're coding the torrent client ofc you know how torrents work.  Torrents are validated by hash - you will get absolutely what you are supposed to and it will be exactly the same on each machine.  However, if the original source is messed up, you will all get exactly that.  Apparently whoever made the torrent wasn't careful or didn't know what they were doing.

If that's the case then I probably wouldn't be afraid to download anything by torrent from anybody on this forum.

I'll keep this page bookmarked, might be good to have more than one installer on my computer, I made a separate sub folder in the Freespace Downloads folder ( yea I have one) and I'll keep your installer in there as I have collected just about every installer anybody has put out so far, and I collected the mods back before GoG re-released FS

I have the shivan installer, Tureys installer, and I'll get yours later this weekend

I just wanted to confirm what had been noted in a bug report (I couldn't find a way to reply to it since it was only the print version): The Wondrous Installer of Turey the diminutive Turambar downloads a Mac binary that doesn't have the executable bit set. Simple to fix for someone with a little know-how (and the wit to check the console) but it would be nice if it were fixed.

On the other hand, if it isn't fixed, it would be nice to keep a note (maybe appended to the readme/sales sheet) telling Mac users what to do if the program doesn't run.

We've contacted the owner of the Installer web site.  He hasn't responded yet, but the domain hasn't expired either.  Hopefully it'll be back up soon.

In the meantime, I'll try to fast-track the completion of the new installer.  It was already programmed in anticipation of one of the installer websites going offline, so it will be able to handle this if it happens in the future.

Incidentally, the installer isn't required to play FSO.  If you have FreeSpace 2 installed on your machine, just download a recent FSO build and play it.

That's what I get for not checking the website.  Last time it was down, but Turey seems to have put it back up without telling anyone.  The installer won't work without the ability to download the list of mod files from the site.

It was down when Hunter's domains expired, but that was at least a couple weeks ago.  It's been up since they all came back up I thought, unless there was another outage I missed.  But I don't think Turey has even as much to do with it as Hunter does these days, does he?
