[RELEASE] Sirius Skybox 2025
(1/1)
Gamma39er:
Here it is. My first skybox release in 2 years. Sirius.
I've been playtesting this skybox by playing the only mission in Freespace where we go to Sirius, Clash of the Titans.
So I'm actually pretty satisfied with this. I know there are things to improve, but this skybox actually covers a lot of what I've always been trying to do all along. Now I just need to take these techniques I've learned and design:
* Betelgeuse.
* Ikeya
* Deneb
* Ribos
* Ross 128
* Alpha Centauri
* Altair
* Delta Serpentis
* Beta Cygni
* Beta Aquilae
And then all of FS1 will be done.
The zip includes:
* A maps folder with .dds files for the 6 sides of a cubic skybox.
* A models folder with one cube with the textures attached to the 6 sides.
The model is important. Just doing a normal cube projection on any cube isn't going to work. I specifically render out my cube face textures to have a camera angle of arctan(1024/1020)*180/pi. The UV's of the model are scaled to the same ratio and so the result is a perfectly seamless skybox with no extra effort on my part after this setup was finished.
Here's the download. As always, critique is welcome.

skdKitsune:
Very nice. The sun lensflare looks good as well.
Now I just wonder how Delta Serpentis (the notoriously very green system) and Gamma Draconis (apparently also green-ish in retail?) will differ from this.

My plan for both of those systems is to make Delta Serpentis more bluish green as well as darker and creepier, with the nebulas implying a direction towards the node. For Gamma Draconis I want something similar but with more sparse Bok globules.
Marguel:
Impressive! Can't wait to see the rest of them!
ShivanSlayer:
Looks impressive!
