Lately I've been having problems with FS2.
It freezes constantly, then comes back, then freezes again. Sort of like a slow stutter. The strange thing is, it has just started doing this and I have not changed anything as far as my system configuration goes and so forth. I notice that while it's temporarily frozen, task manager does indeed tell me the program is not responding. A few minutes later, it'll start working again. Then temporarily freezr again. I've tried re-installing it and such, but it still does it. Any ideas?
Here's a list of things in my system that may be useful info:
win2k (with latest compatibility update)
GF2 MX (det drivers v662 whql)
SB live value w/liveware3
Thanks for any help (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Try disabling the sound. I had this same problem with Descent 3, and it went away if you turned off the sound.
I never figured out how to actually fix it, though. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

I don't really know what is the problem if you have installed the latest patch for FS2 and also updated W2k with service pack (latest is 2) and latest compatibility updates. FS2 runs smoothly in my W2k, actually you should try next trick:
Open notepad and create a txt file on a same folder where fs2.exe is located and write next lines on it:
echo off
start /high FS2.exe
then save and close, now rename the file to fs2.bat and launch it to play FS2. Create a shortcut for this .bat file on your desktop or on startmenu
W2k uses priorities for processes, by default every process is started as "normal". You can change it manually by using task manager but launching it via .bat file is easier. Mostly it is recommended to use "real time" protity, but for me it caused my mouse to lag badly.
More tips and tweaks look at this site: http://www.3dspotlight.com/guides-os.shtml ("http://www.3dspotlight.com/guides-os.shtml")
There is also a good services guide, definitely worth of looking. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Latest drivers for your Geforce or Voodoo or whatever you have, and if you are using a motherboard with VIA-chipset, download latest VIA-drivers and install them, http://viahardware.com/ ("http://viahardware.com/")
Remember to install VIA drivers first, then drivers for your video card, and remove old ones first.

Or don't use VIA at all, cause they're crap... won't even acknowledge the sound card they made me :grrr:

Well, I tried changing the priority but it didn't help, still doesn't work right (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
All my drivers are the same they were from before, and FS2 worked then. My Via 4 in 1 drivers aren't the latest (ie, they aren't the drivers released a few days ago)
Looks like formatting, which I could use anyway, is my best bet. Hopefully I'll get that done thursday.
Thank you all for the help.
