Title: Stealth Ain't Dead
Post by: Sandwich on June 26, 2008, 03:32:54 pm
The rumors of Stealth's demise have been greatly exaggerated. I have received concrete proof that Stealth is indeed alive and well. (Stealth sent me a video of himself, telling me that he was not, in fact, dead; and greeting me with the then-current date.) Stealth then sent me his version of the events prior and subsequent to the posting of the "RIP Stealth" thread.

This is simplifying the story somewhat, but the basics are that while Stealth was away for a week in an area without free access to the Net, an ex-co-worker of his managed to exploit a weakness in certain systems that were temporarily up for an upgrade, and got ahold of many of Stealth's passwords. With this information, he posted on HLP the "news" of Stealth's death, using pictures he found on Stealth's computer to enhance the validity of the story.

Yes, Stealth had pictures of a wrecked car on his computer (which he had gotten from the cadillacfaq image gallery); and the pictures of him, supposedly taken scant hours before his "death", were actually pictures Stealth took while on his trip, which he then remotely uploaded to his account.

This was merely a nasty practical joke in extremely poor taste. We can just be thankful that Stealth is alive and well. As for why he hasn't posted on the forums yet, he's been waiting for us to make this announcement, which was delayed due to the arrival of my baby girl.

There's no need to bombard him with "Thank God you're alive" messages, really - he read the threads about his "demise", and saw what you all posted. No need to go overboard.

Thanks,
The HLP Administration

P.S. I've removed the "RIP Stealth" and "Stealth Memorial Thread" threads to prevent any further confusion.

Thank God for that!

Welcome back Stealth! It's good to see you around again, and be sure to administer multiple slappings to whoever was responsible for that level of 'humour', because there was nothing funny whatsoever about it.

The best news is that you are well, and that is what is important.

thanks man, i appreciate it, but no need for anyone to welcome me back.  i've been here, just out of it for a couple of weeks, and then when i got back i didn't post 'cause of all this stuff that i wanted to resolve with the admins first.

Aye. At one point I did start to wonder why a co-worker would be arsed to track down the web communities Stealth was a member of.

Don't get me wrong, I bought it at first, but once the first suspicions were raised, it all sort of became clearer to me.

Good job not actually kicking it Stealth

Dammit - that was really rude. Buuut it beats him being dead - that's for sure.
it was a pretty well done practical joke though, and i'm kind of impressed actually. it had a lot of people fooled. (including me)  i will not be expecting shadowlurker to show up here again :)

I had to restrain myself from posting more in the RIP Stealth thread--I too felt very weird about the entire thing--stuff was just not right. Anyways--glad that Stealth is back. If he can prove he was only using HLPBB during his breaks, he could have a valid reason to have that ass-hat of an employee taken down a few notches.

Glad to know you are in fact still here, Stealth.

No shame in being fooled, it's nothing anyone in their right mind would try to make a joke about.

Everyone note it was an ex co-worker, which sounds like a case of sour grapes to my mind.

This changes nothing about my opinions as to how the RIP thread turned into a cluster****.

They should all still be ****ing ashamed of themselves.

lol to be honest i haven't started.  i have a garage full of parts, but the car's still stock.

had it professionally polished and waxed the other day.  took almost 8 hours, but it is FLAWLESS again.  makes me almost want to just keep it stock :)

on the other hand, the warranty expires in less than a month... so i have to make up my mind real quick whether to a) extend the warranty another 2 years, or b) build a complete monster ;)

also just FYI - i didn't read all the posts on my "RIP" thread... some of the first couple were so heart-felt, that i just skipped over most of them until the very end.  i'm sure a few of you posted some really heartless comments about me in the thread, but hey, to each his own.  i love the community, and hold no grudges against any of you :)

also i have to thank Goober for leading the investigation

so that's it.  please no one else say "glad you're alive" or whatever.  it's pretty embarassing.

Well, I in turn have to thank Inquisitor for first planting the seed of skepticism. :)

This whole episode should illustrate the fact that the Internet (and, unfortunately, people in general) shouldn't be relied upon to be universally trustworthy.  Con artists popped up even after 9/11, so this minor incident is child's play.

Also, I feel I should remind the board that one or two members were calling for the deletion of all posts that even mentioned the possibility of a hoax.  Suppressing an opposing viewpoint is hardly the fairest or smartest way to have a discussion, regardless of your opinion on the subject.  And in this case, that opposing viewpoint turned out to actually be correct.

Yeah, was still rude to doubt someone's death. Just goes to show the power of hoaxes.

Maybe a little rude, but sometimes it is better to express doubt over something that seams awkward. It saves some of the energy of driving yourself crazy by thinking it over. ;)

Well, I was half expecting this development by now, but it's nice to you see back around here. However, I thought it was obvious that many of those comments were anything but heartfelt. :p Most people were just trying to appear polite given the situation.

I have to admit though, the whole thing was very clever on that coworker's part, even if in poor taste. He posted exactly the right kinds of images that would convince people, and he only really got cornered when people started pressing him for an official record.

It was more than one or two, but I agree. I had a mind to say just this on several occasions in that thread, even though at that stage I would have still bet on the whole thing being genuine, but didn't want to get into an argument with someone.

I know i shouldn´t write that, because i´m a new Member...BUT...i have the right to have my own Opinion.

1. This Story sounds even more unbelievable then the first "Stealth is dead Story" .
2. A Co-Ex-Worker got all his Passwords and startet a "macabre Joke" ?
3. He first has to "deal out" something with the Admins, before he´s starting to post again ?

I mean. If I read a Thread on a Forum that says i´m dead. I would want to proof at once, that i´m not^^

Sorry to be honest, but I feel like this whole Thing is just some attentive-thingy.

If Stealth had come straight back, there would, no doubt, have been people attacking him without even bothering to see his side of the situation. That will happen anyway, but better for the Admins if they can keep their eyes on things and be aware of the situation, rather than suddenly have the forum erupt into a massive flame-war.

I think that's why Stealth chose to wait.

Personally, I think the best bet is to put this behind us and move on, the one thing Stealth's ex-colleague wanted to do was influence people's opinion of Stealth, the best way we can get revenge on him for this sick joke is to move beyond it and not allow him/her to succeed.

being a new member doesn't mean you don't have the rights of everyone else man :)

how everything went down is kind of confusing... it was a long story :(

and yeah, i read the thread, and contacted the admins first.  i wasn't about to just post, without clarifying what happened (i had to run an internal investigation first, and they needed me to prove that it was me)

Edit: Though, in all fairness, I don't know how much physical evidence there is that it was this person, knowing someone did something doesn't always mean you have the means to prove it.

So who's responsible for this prank? (Sorry if this was answered...I was too lazy to read all the comments)

Thanks in advance.
Some ex-co worker.

You know, it's funny,  I read the thread. I even downloaded the mission, which was pretty good. But something always struck me as being...off. Now that I think about it, it was the pictures of the car. Maybe I watch too much CSIs and Forensic Files and North Mission Road, but the damage to the car in the pictures was not severe enough for the accident described. Anywho, welcome back Stealth. Glad you're here and not in the great beyond. And your former Network Admin needs an official Tae Kwon Leap "boot to tha head" (woosh-thud).

As for the hoax, it's unfortunate this sick person put some thought into it that fooled most of us. I hope the old cosmic "what goes around comes around" kicks in someday.

It would be particularly just if his antics were not covered up under the rug as this is just the sort of activity future employers should be made aware of.

Ahh, thought so... I was wondering if somehow something weird happened, as Caddys are quite safe, no?  And, IDK how the heck what's his name would have known that you decided to dive off the side of a ledge instead of taking oncoming traffic... as it might have been just a knee jerk reaction.

Also, did you change your PayPal password and securtiy questions?  He has (had?) access.  Ofc I'm sure you know this, just wanted to point it out in case it got overlooked somehow.

EDIT: and this would have been much easier to track down if you didn't have so many darned variants of Caddy car pics posted on HLP that were / are / want to be yours!!

Glad to see someone is rather alive than dead. One thing that pokes around in my head after the fake death story is the heroic death part of it. Perhaps his coworker went around everywhere on stealth's computer that he went and had decided that stealth is the guy who absolutely can not go down heroicly if he were to die. I mean ****, it made us all more understand his death (fake) death, and feel appreciative of the friend we once hung out with. Even though it wasn't true.

It was just one of those things to throw in there to enthrall us a lot more with the lie of stealth being dead as the facts being presented by a liar. And when you think about it, would it have been just as impacting if the dude said stealth died in a fire saving cats and dogs from a burning pet store? Probably, but less believable as well. His coworkers a good liar, but the whole time while stealth was gone the heroic story presented by him seemed odd. Even with the pictures.

How much do we really want to have our ears open to tasty stuff when we it is at times easy to make a right decision about something, or a difficult decision. No one around here is going to have their ears open to stealth dying by getting his weewee stuck in a pool pump. Now the story presented by stealths coworker was interesting even with the photos. The thing that seemed a little odd about it is that it seems so perfectly heroic and planned when in reality car wrecks are a mess. Plus the no word on why stealth died or his condition after he had gotten out of the car. After the crash, he had gotten out, but didn't make it alive to the ambulance rushing to get there in time. LOL.

I'm not saying that stealths fake death didn't work on me. It did like the rest of us, but just read the story shadow_whatever who made up the whole story and posted it again. It really is sort of funny. And after now that we know stealths alive. You can totally see the design the story has, and it's funny the way it's written to get us all attatched. Then many will be able to see familiar designs else where (help look for liars and exxageraters).

yeah.  and, as stated, there was traffic in the other lane, and it was dark, so i didn't know exactly what it WOULD do, but i did it anyway for the 'greater good' :-/

as it turns out, it put a ton of scratches on the left side of the car, but i managed to avoid major obstacles.  insurance covered everything... damage was a couple thousand $.  no major suspension damage.  one rim and tire and a couple of body shop visits later, and it looks perfect again :)

:wtf: That sounds pretty similar to the original story in the original "fake" announcement.

Also I'm kind of surprised that you aren't more pissed off at the guy who did this and that neither you nor the workplace are pursuing legal action.  After all, he DID hack into a computer system.  Companies spend thousands of dollars to patch their systems after a virus outbreak even when the virus does no damage at all.

Are you sure this coworker actually exists?  After all, the original story was a ruse; why can't this be? :drevil: You know, there's an old saying in Texas: "Fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again."  Or something like that.

it's been dealt with internally.  life goes on.

EDIT: and i should add, he didn't "hack" into a computer system.  if it was anyone's fault this happened, it was mine, because in traveling here and there, i completely overlooked system accounts that were wide open... accounts that we'd used for testing, but that should've been locked down.  plus i know what was done and what wasn't done.  live and learn.  it won't happen again
