Title: Black Screen (on start) in OS X (10.5.5) version 3.6.9
Post by: musicaleCA on December 06, 2008, 08:05:39 am
If this is a known issue, please, flame away. *gets his fire-retardant clothing* Search isn't urning up anything useful for me.

I used Turey's Freespace Open installer to install FS2Open to my Applications directory, ignoring only what I obviously didn't need. I then opened the disk image containing the FS2_Open 3.6.9.app, and copied that file to the same directory that I installed FS2Open in. Upon opening the .app, all I got was a black screen, with no way of getting back to my desktop, save for a hard reboot. :( Am I missing something here? Doing something wrong? Would it be better to just play this on my Boot Camp partition instead? (I don't really want to...have other games that'd need to go if I wanted to play FS2, and it's just a pain in the neck to restart all the time anyway; getting the OS X version to work would be preferable.)

And while I'm pestering you guys with questions: It sounds like I need to copy the campaign files from my FS2 discs if I want to play the FS2 missions...Just how do I go about that? What do I copy where? This is fuzzy to me, and it's equally hard to find information about that using search (and Google).

We don't do that, Bob.

Anyways, FSO requires the entire FS2. Concidering you're on a Mac, I'd suggest you try to find a Windork computer somewhere. Then, if you have FS2 already, install it on that computer. If not, get your incredibly cheap and, most importantly, legal copy from Good Old Games, then install it to that computer. Afterwards, you can just copy the entire \freespace2\ folder from the Windork computer to your Mac. Then just acquire the FSO build for Mac and possibly the Mac Launcher and voila.

Oh, and install OpenAL as well. It is needed.

Just copy the whole folder over to my Mac eh? I won't even need ntfs-3g for that. Cool beans. :-D

Oh well, it'll be awhile before I get around to it then. I need to get the DVD drive on this laptop replaced. It seems to have trouble reading the ends of discs (as in the last sectors on a disc). Thanks for clearing all that up. ^.^

And yes...I do feel awfully silly for overlooking this, but since it's impossible to use the original FS2 disc to install to OS X, I figured I'd just go for it and hope for the best. I'll just use a virtual windows machine...or boot camp...or something. >.>
