I did do it, honest! (FA Campaign 3 Mission 2)
http://www.geocities.com/ngtm1r/camp3miss2.zip

I've tested most of it, but I can't vouch for the debriefing or the Alexus actually blowing up...

Edit: Found and fixed some errors. Feedback would be nice...Also I'm not sure it's completely mistake-free. I'm probably overlooking something.

I've been very busy the last couple of evenings but as long as my house doesn't get washed away by a biblical flood I promise to do some testing tonight :D

Well I did do some testing just not on this mission (I realised I'd kept freespacegundam waiting even longer). I'll look at it first thing tomorrow.

BTW next time start the topic with [FA]. It makes it easier to find :)

Okay. I've taken a look at the mission. Several points to make.

1. Where is the music? It's deathly silent out there. Pick a tune from the mission specs editor. :)

2. The enemy fighters didn't seem that much of a challenge. Sending in one wave of fighters at a time against 3 wings of friendlies is a little too easy. In addition the enemy fighters only appear during a narrow window. The rest of the mission the player is sitting around bored. More Fighters please!  :)

3. There was no return to base directive (even if there was a message). Many players tend to wait for the directive to pop up before leaving so you need to put one in.

4. Personally I would have had two main objectives. Capture Bosch and Capture Alexus (this one would be marked invalid and would be validated once the Bosch jumps out). Doing things this way would mean you'd get the half victory music rather than the victory music (feels more correct to me cause the Bosch is still at large). But that's just a personal choice. I'm only mentioning it in case you choose the way you FREDded it because you didn't know how to do it this way.

Okay. Lets take a look at the mission in FRED.

5. You don't appear to have a debriefing stage for if the pilot fails to protect the freighters. There should be one as those poseidons are pretty vulnerable.

6. The mission doesn't have a debriefing stage for if the player jumps out without permission. This is probably the most common mistake I've seen while testing for the FRED Academy though so I'm not surprised to see it again :)

7. Your first event protects the TACs. You could just as easily do this from the ships editor>Misc options and it's a better place to do it from as it prevents you from wasting a SEXP.

8. Good work with the whole disabling the Alexus bit. I expected to see mistakes there but it was handled fairly well. Alpha go in without orders from the player and also regard disarming the Alexus as more important than disabling it (which is pretty clever of them :) ) In general I noted that you've taken care to make sure that the AI fighters are given orders, something I rarely see from beginners. Well done.

9. Since you're using the Ahkerton in this mission it's possible to take the Alexus without damaging it. Have the BP Chatter #1 event check if the Alexus is damaged. Have a different event occur if the crew are still alive (for instance the bridge is locked and the crew are fighting back).  In addition check that the Echelon is still alive at this point.

10. Lots of lovely chatter. Well done on that too.

11. This is a damage limitation bit. We all know that some players don't read the messages all the time. The problem is that the whole mission falls apart if the player wasn't paying attention and blows up the Alexus. Take some steps in both the mission and the debriefing to address this.

Okay. That will do me for now. Get that lot fixed and I'll try this again :)

Nope. If you look at the [V] missions you'll notice that they all have a debriefing for pilots who go AWOL. If you think about it you'll see that the only way to do this automatically would be to hardcode it so that the mission looked for a return to base directive (otherwise how would the mission know it's finished?)

I'm glad that they didn't do things that way as it means you can make up your own AWOL messages, have missions where the player loses contact with command and has to decide for himself when to jump out etc.

What might be confusing you is that traitor messages are hard coded. The only way to prevent those is to turn them off for the entire mission.

Okay, most of the changes made...

But in regards to the music, I have a problem. Namely, I'm not sure how to set the music for the mission, and I'm not sure what to use even if I could. So, suggestions?

Go to the mission editor and look near the bottom for the music rollout.  You'll have 7 tunes Genesis to Joshua. Pick one you like. If you don't know what you like get hold of a copy of VPView and take a look in the warble.vp. The FS2 tunes are set out in a patern you can see by looking at the music table. The bit that will be most important to you is what music is played during the battles. Basically that goes something like this.

Tune 1, Genesis = FS2 Btl Axx
Tune 2, Exodus = FS2 Btl Bxx
Tune 3, Leviticus = FS2 Btl Cxx
Tune 4, Numbers = FS2 Btl Dxx

So far so straight forewards but after this [V] mixed up the tracks a little.

Tune 5, Deuteronomy = FS2 Btl Fxx
Tune 6, Joshua = FS2 Btl Gxx
Tune 7, Revelation = FS2 Btl Exx

Personally I think you'd probably enjoy opening up the tunes in VPView and listening to them to decide which tune you feel best fits your mission (I know that I love going through both the FS1 and FS2 music).
If I give a reccomendation then I risk turning this thread into a best FS2 music thread :)

That said there is a far simpler way to hear the music. Simply playtest the mission with each of the 7 tracks and decide which you feel worked best :)

...I am an idiot. I have the HOTU version. So, of course, I have no functional music, despite having just replaced my cheap imitation media .vp files with the real thing. The .wavs themselves in the music section of the data folder are also cheap imitations...

Well, despite that, I got my hands on MP3 versions, listened to that, and made a selection, so it has music now. Or should.
I also corrected/changed some things that were bugging me and added yet another enemy fighter wing to chew up more of the time gap that tends to happen at the end of the mission.

This ought to be the final, release-quality version...assuming I haven't messed it up somehow.

Hmmm. I'm finding it a bit hard actually. I'll give it another try on easy rather than medium just in case it's cause I've gotten crap through not playing very often.

Spotted a few minor mistakes which I'll write down later. Nothing major so far though.

Still not there I'm afraid. It's definately getting better though. A few mistakes still remain though. I'll deal with the major ones first.

1. Even on easy I ended up facing the last waves of the enemy with no support whatsoever. I think the number of enemy fighters is a little too high to be honest. The start of the mission could use being a little easier as that Leviathan is a bit of a ***** to fight with several wings on your back.

Anyone else what to try out this mission and see if they also find it too hard. I hate play balancing cause it's hard to tell if the mission really is too hard or if I'm just crap cause I don't play FS2 as often these days

2. If the Echelon is destroyed the player is left fighting the enemies waves until he is allowed to jump out. This is a little annoying as you already know you've failed the mission and there isn't anything important to be gained by sticking around to fight enemy fighters. Worse by this point I was completely alone. It might be worth bringing in a another wing if the player loses all his wingmen (or at least making reinforcements available).

3. If the Echelon is destroyed no return to base directive appears and the player is greeted by the AWOL debriefing.

4. Something is screwy with the Debriefing stage that appears when all the enemy fighters are destroyed. All that appears is XSTR. I suspect this is a case of FRED2_Open corrupting the mission as when I looked it in Notepad I saw this.

Code: [Select]

$Formula: ( is-goal-true-delay
   "Destroy Enemy Fighters"
   0
)
$Multi text
    XSTR("XSTR(", -1)
; clearly our opponents have more resources at their disposal then we first thought.", -1)

 $end_multi_text
$Voice: none.wav
$Recommendation text:
    XSTR("", -1)
$end_multi_text

Unless you used speech marks in the debrief I can't think what you could have done wrong to cause this so it's probably nothing you did wrong, just FRED being an ass again. If you tell me what the line was supposed to say it's probably better if I correct the mission myself (or at least post what that little bit of code should say).

I spotted a couple of little glitches in the mission brief. In the first stage you've got too many spaces between the words Bosch and represents which makes it look odd in game.
Second you've got the icon of a perseus with a question mark on it for enemy forces in the third stage. Nothing really wrong with that but the standard icon used for unknown enemy forces is the nebula one which brings up the question mark when pressed.
Finally you're over using the lines to join ships together somewhat. If you like things that way round you're welcome to keep it but I felt that you should only use that sparingly and instead use the highlight tickbox instead (That makes the little triangles circle and lock onto the highlighted craft). Still that's a style opinion and it's your mission not mine so you can do as you please :)

I noticed the briefing glitch at the last part too, and corrected it already.
Frankly, I don't like the lines much, but in at least one case in the briefing I kinda had to use them, because highlighting would be...well, confusing. I'll get rid of most of the lines, though.
The unknown isn't really a complete unknown, it's meant to represent the possible presence of enemy fighters, so using the fighter icon seemed appropriate. I left it in.

You really should stop calling it final.

1) It's not final till I say it's final :p
2) You're just asking for me to find fault with it ;)

On a more serious note though I'll give it a try.

Final version is pretty good. We aces liiiike tough missions. :)

Wasn't too hard on medium...a little chaotic once the frigate-iceni-replica-thing jumps in...but still :p

Excellent battle chatter, especially the stalling part. Very nice.

Pretty OK mission.

Still finding this mission too hard. By the time the two wings of eyrinies leaped in I was the only fighter left! I decided at that point to see if your AWOL debriefing was working rather than sticking around to face the inevitable. :)

I think I'll have to set myself as invulnerable and then test out the logic that way.

Oh. Before I forget. Use the escort list. I had to manually add the Alexus.
