The current stance is still to support PPC, but I just don't know if we have any devs who can at the moment, so I can't say whether or not that stance is going to change.

I realize this is an old thread but the original post describes the exact same problem I am having so I'm wondering if there has been any progress resolving it. I am on a iMac G5 (PPC) running Mac OS X 10.4.11 with no current plans to upgrade anytime soon so I am particularly interested in seeing a solution.

In particular, I crash to the desktop repeatedly when using mediavps_3612 at a particular point in certain missions. Recently, I have been testing this with Training Mission 4 of the FS2 campaign: I will always crash after being hit by one or two missiles from the cruiser during countermeasures training.

I'm not sure you would have the right debug log, the crash log you posted says you were running the regular, non-debug build which does not generate the fs2_open.log file that we need.  Run the (debug) build and try to generate the crash, then find the fs2_open.log in your FreeSpace2/data/ folder (I thought it was in the ~/Library/FS2_Open folder on a mac, but apparently not on mine).  That's the debug log we need.  Also, before you run the debug build, create an empty FreeSpace2/data/debug_filter.cfg file.  It will populate itself with the possible debug log options and you can - or + which ones you want, I would + just about everything because I don't think too much info will hurt in this case, although someone might be able to suggest a more useful set of settings.  I would not enable +parse though.  I do want to get this bug fixed, but I don't any current coders who still have a usable Gx laying around.  I had a G4 at one point but it has since lost its usefulness.  If you have any more questions or info feel free to post it.  If you have the time to help troubleshoot, there are almost always coders and other help around in #hard-light or #scp on the EsperNet IRC server.  If you're not familiar with setting up IRC, click this link for the HLP IRC channel and go from there.

Both fs2_open.log and debug_filter.cfg are found in ~/Library/FS2_Open on my Mac. This might be because my Freespace 2 folder is in ~/Games and not my Applications folder or, perhaps, because I am running 10.4.11. Either way, the game runs fine as is.

Just out of curiosity, any reason you don't upgrade the OS?  I get wanting to keep the G5 around as long as you can, but Leopard is like $20.  Or free, depending on your moral compass.  Newer versions of Xcode are coming with new compilers that are increasingly sketchy compiling for a target as low as 10.4, and I would love to be able to bump the min requirement to 10.5.

Also, delete tangoA and tangoB.  Don't need those in your root folder, or anywhere.

Thanks to all for the prompt response. I've deleted the files you suggested. Also, I want to make clear that the only time I encounter this particular bug is when using the mediavps_3612 mod. I ran through the entire FSport campaign and ran into the exact same problem: certain missions (not all missions) would always crash to the desktop at about the same time in each mission but only when the mediavps_3612 mod was also loaded.

chief1983, to satisfy your curiosity: Actually, I have a copy of 10.5 and used to use it but I got tired having to constantly switch startup disks and rebooting whenever I wanted to break out the joystick and fly the unfriendly skies. I used to fly flight sims quite often and the only decent ones for the Mac, even after all these years, is Falcon 4 and F/A-18 Korea, both of which only run under OS 9/Classic. 10.4 is the last OS X version that supports the Classic environment and since everything else I currently use runs under 10.4 or Classic I haven't found a compelling need to upgrade.

However, I do see the writing on the wall as expecting compatibility with such an old operating system is getting harder and harder to justify. It's hard enough as it is with finding software that doesn't require an Intel Mac nowadays but I'm not buying a new Mac until I absolutely need to and, unfortunately, games don't qualify - my days of chasing the bleeding edge of technology are long over. More than likely, I'll soon upgrade to 10.5 and relegate 10.4/Classic to another partition anyway but I could do it sooner given a compelling reason (like playing FreeSpace).

By the way, I can run test builds to solve this bug, if needed. Cheers!

Many features of the MediaVPs are still enabled/disabled by the various command line options, such as glow, normal, and shine/env maps.  If you have all those on, you could try turning them off to see if one in particular is leading to crashes.  You may as well uncheck Normal Maps as you have no GLSL support.  I have no idea which flags would be suspect really from your log, so I'd just try a few at a time and see what happens.  Also, perhaps try a recent nightly build instead of the latest 3.6.13.  We will also have a test build from our major feature development branch up shortly you could try, I will keep you updated.

I ran mediavps_3612 with everything deselected in the launcher except for no_glsl - result was same error in same place in Training Mission 4 after being hit by a missile. The current stance is still to support PPC, but I just don't know if we have any devs who can at the moment, so I can't say whether or not that stance is going to change.

Interestingly rasxvc has come across some PPC related issues while getting FS2_Open to compile and run on Solaris (working now on Solaris/x86).

Unless FS2_Open has problems accessing public files from within a user's folder, however, that shouldn't be an issue.

That path is normal on OSX.  Also it is the path of the binary which doesn't matter to FSO anyway.

@WildEye: The cause of the crash is not apparent looking at the code, so I have added some code to trunk that will hopefully show us better what the problem is.  I have asked chief1983 to generate a new OSX nightly build with this new code in it and post a link to it in this thread.  Once the link is posted I would like you to use the new binary and try and reproduce the error.

Please remember to post an updated debug log if you can get the error to occur.
