Title: And what about making a Halo mod about FS2?
Post by: lobisomem on March 30, 2008, 09:29:43 am
Hi guys!
These days i was playing one of the campaings made for SCP, and there was one of that boarding marines teams. I remembered that, althought there are many parts of the storyline in the FS that talks about land combat between shivans, humans and vasudans, i have never found anything about playing like one of that comandoes, and start wondering how wonderfull would be to have missions using the ships of FSP to attack land objectives, make support for land troops and, finally, playing as land troop sometimes (even if it should be to take control of an enemy ship after a boarding).
There anyone have any idea if someone is doing something like this?

See ya.

In TH-O-RY it may be possible. Terrain is no problem as already demonstrated, manny ground combat however would probably involve lotsa modelling, scripting and such even to animate legs walking. Also, you'd need to make some kind of... I dunno to animate the gun.

I think he means making a mod for Halo, rather than altering the FS2 engine.

right?

Oh duh. True.

Well then, it's quite obviously much less of a problem, modeling part still exists though.

shouldn't this be in gaming discussion?

If we're talking about a mod for Halo rather then for Freespace.

Sounds like a very good idea. but it will take a pro modeler. and even so... what halo version were you planning on modding? since we can all agree vista is crap, that rules out halo2... so... i dunno

I have a buddy that mods Halo constantly, and I mean for a living. I can drag his ass in here?

Oh... that´s a point.. sorry for starting this post here... :( :(
But, yes i was really thinking more in a mod for halo using freespace background, and why not, using freespace machinery in a planetary contest.
I put this topic here because i wondered that, if someone have already tried this it could be in this area...
Thanks to all!

Except he frowns upon the model making here on HLP. I showed him Turambar's x-wing and he said it sucked ass.
He still said that even after i mentioned that starfighters didn't have to be so detailed.

He was all ranting about **** like bump-maps and stuff :doubt:

was Turambar's x-wing a bad example of the average model?

This model sucks too. I mean, it's ridiculously low-poly and there's hardly any bump mapping, never mind other shaders to make the surface shiny. Who ever made this model deserves to be shot, it is completely unrealistic and jagged, full of big polygons that are clearly visible. No smoothing either. And what's up with flat lighting, it's not shiny at all... :ick: :hopping:

Well... if he can make a good shivan model for one person shooter combat in a halo mod he can say whatever he want.
But, without doing so, i still being fanatically devoted to HLP models!  :)

I think the Crysis engine would be the better choice...  :nervous:

To tell you the truth i have pour understanding in programming stuff...
I suggested Hallo just because this is one system that at least one of you good programmers understand well.
However, as a player, i believe that there a lot of first person shooter platforms that could be used... including swat tatics, halo, medal of honour, battlefield... each one have a diferent point of view... swat could give us a good tatical movement for ship invasion, battlefield an idea about ground combat with air support...

dont give me that... i think halo will be one of the best engines to build it on. you were probably right to begin with... unless we use an older engine such as quake 3.

I think it is also fair to say that halo is built on an engine which is more open, so it will be a lot easyer to mod.
as for crisis, it is based on dat files ect and therefore you will need to be a programmer to mod.

so like i said, if you want it to be built on the crisis engine, dave2040, we are going to leave it to you, cause i am sorry to say, noone else is as intelligent as you. :hopping:

has the halo source been released though
cause I know Crysis's has
it comes with modpack
although i have no clue what any of the code means ( i wish i did though)

yeah the code comes in the official SDK
at least i think its all of the code
i really have no way to tell though
its in a folder called CryEngine which contains 3.08 mb of c++ source and header files
interestingly enough, vehicles and weapons are configured through files similar to volitions .tbl
Title: Re: And what about making a Halo mod about FS2?
Post by: aurora_energy on April 25, 2008, 01:15:59 am
But I think the programming in the .tbl files is compleatly diffrent to that of freespace.
.tbl is just a file extention. it is the same as a .txt

You're completly right.
I shoudl explain.  The crysis vehicle stats/date/whatever 9at least for mods) is stored in .xml files that are not implemented in the same way as the .tbl and do contain xml code.
I jujst mean t that it was a file devoted only to the vehicle statistics and was easily editable.
if someone wanted to do a crysis mod, they could probably get some good advice from crymod.

Hey there, sorry for the bump, but you can count on me as a modder. For the map we will need Halo Custom Edition. Its the only version of Halo that can be stuffed with this type of content. But for the modelling , umm...lets just say Im not into modelling/animating.

He won't. He generally looks down up on the HLP community after showing him the rather beautiful looking Star Wars models. He seemed really unimpressed.

Devrous did say I could Beta test, though. I'm able to do that if we're going to revive this project ourselves, as I have both Halo Custom Edition and FSO.

Wow Haloboy100, since most of the models released or shown are from like 4-5 YEARS ago that's a lot of balls.
Add the fact that an optimized model with the right textures can look identical to a 100k model but for GAMING it doesn't matter. These are game oriented meshes, not meant to be art like at scifimeshes.com

IF he can do better in game then he's welcome to try. (oh and for the record the highest successful model in FS2 AFAIK was in the 60k-69k-ish range, PEGASUS) that is by no means the limit.

And great way you pay attention, Normal and Bump mapping are being added to the new ones so...........
(Read some threads)

Another case of armchair modding. Someone with a bad attitude only sees what they want to see and looks down on other things and it clouds their perceptions.

We certainly don't want those kind of trolls in any of our gaming sites...

I got sucked into this thread cause I thought it was Devrous's. This thread should be moved to General Gaming...

Mmm..hmmm? Aren't we all going off-topic?
About the Halo mod, all I have to say is that this isnt going anywhere without models. I could do the remaining part, but that would be like FS2 with no ships, only infantry.

HEY WAIT A MINUTE! Is this supposed to be a ship-to-ship battle in space or a land-based fight?

And also, I don't think that the mod can have different models for different species.
Unless, this is not multiplayer but a single-player map.
Title: Re: And what about making a Halo mod about FS2?
Post by: haloboy100 on June 12, 2008, 09:06:59 am
It's most likely going to be singleplayer first, so making ships for other species is possible. It will be space combat, of course. If we wanted a ground-based Freespace, we would of modded a modern FPS instead of Freespace.

and for the last time, this is Freespace, not Halo. Missions are called "Missions", not "maps" ;)

Hey I'm the modeler Supersonic was refering to.

Models can be converted, although his heirachy and stuff has to be correct.

Well Supersonic was talking about making a mod of FS2 for halo (I don't know if its for the regular halo or the Custom Edition) so we don't need to keep the hierarchy, as halo only needs 1 model (consisting of several objects for animation purposes) which are the linked to nodes for exporting to halo and animation.

But at the moment I have no idea what anything in the game looks like so I'm going to have to play the game first (boy am I glad I cleaned up my hard drive a couple of days ago :P)

Was just a passing remark. But I can see you're really passionate about making this thing work.

Either way we are currently going nowhere...
If anyone is actually serious about porting freespace to halo... ill be happy to listen...
in the meantime, i suggest we just wait for devious to come back with near no more work done on halo port freespace since last time he was here.

Ive heard about stuff like these, ports to some other game, "woohoo" mods, "fanboy" mods and most of the time they just die down.
(For example,Mart, remember CMT SPv2?)

You mean halo to freespace.

Quick clarification:

Porting Halo to Freespace = Taking stuff from the Halo game and putting it into the SCP engine. The game wouldn't have anything to do with the Freespace universe; it would only share the game engine. You would have the Covenants and all that stuff; no Zods.

Porting Freespace to Halo = Taking stuff from Freespace and putting it into the Halo engine. This means that you are a little marine running around killing Zods and getting slaughtered by Shivans. The game only shares Halo's engine, nothing else with the Halo series.

It seems as though people keep confusing these two. Don't anymore.

Uhh SPv2 is still being worked on atm.

Also SuperSonic dragged me into this and he hasnt even got a design doc, sonic what are you trying to do with the FS2 to Halo Convertion? I'm getting confused now.

Hi guys!
Sorry for don´t giving any ideas for so long. I´m in the middle of some tests, but i´m glad to see that this thread have gone so far. When i first posted this thread i was really thinking if someone have ever had the idea of making a freespace to halo porting, after that i learned that the oposite was being done by someone. I like one person shooters, and i love the freespace universe, that was why i figured about giving the idea.
I can´t try to learn how to mod or model nowadays, however, if anyone want a tester... freespace is ever a good mind releaser after soem hours os study.
See ya, and good job.

Title: Re: And what about making a Halo mod about FS2?

Absolutely. We don't have someone who has the time to model, let alone people who want to model, no one who knows how to work on maps, obviously no voice actors or textures’, and no clue as to what is happening to FreeSpace Halo, let alone Halo FreeSpace. All we have are testers, and that brings us... nowhere.

Give it up; the project is dead until devrous gets back.

But is halo that moddable anyway? Wouldn't it be a better choice just to pirate buy an Unity copy?

It's not too moddable but it's possible to make stuff like this.

There you go 2400+ entries to search... Use sketchup pro or the blender plugin.
That should cover most of the models... Ask for permission.

Actually you need something more important than that.

You need a team LEADER. Someone who is totally focused on the project at hand.
If you're not willing to put years into it, then don't apply.

Once you have your "Rock" to keep on people and organize things you need a story, or you work on teh models you think will be in the story: A writer and modelers/texturers.

Voice actors are the LAST thing you need, it's audio candy for an almost finished mod.

Then if you decided you want special features not in the newest build, then you need coders.

You get the point. Anyway, without at least ONE indivudual to keep things grounded mods tend to fly apart, thigns get lost or overlooked, and no one can say exactly what's going on.

A team leader should have a back up and a third, they should have equal access to the latest files, should the worst happen...

Good luck with your effort!

All due respect to the intentions of the mod. But shouldn't it be based in a Halo mod forum where people have experience with the engine? Or try another FPS with fighters. Like red faction or the battlefield series :)

Why won't this stay dead? Everyone wants to play, nobody wants to work.

Until and unless anyone comes up with a fully modeled Vasudan and a fully modeled Terran Marine, there will be no Freespace FPS.

Until and unless anyone comes up with POFs for the Marine Pelican and Covenant Banshee, there will be no Halo mod.

Until and unless those happen, I recommend we bury this forum.

Agreed.

I think I'll let this thread go until the weekend, then disable (i.e. make invisible and inaccessible) the board.

Exactly my point. Noone is willing to do anything, and anyone who wants to lacks the knowledge to do so.
Until and unless anyone comes up with a fully modeled Vasudan and a fully modeled Terran Marine, there will be no Freespace FPS.
Which noone has done yet.
Until and unless anyone comes up with POFs for the Marine Pelican and Covenant Banshee, there will be no Halo mod.
Which Devrous has and left noone. one of the disadvantages of being a 1 man team.
Do you all suppose his email about his computer dieing was bull****, cause it's been far too long in my oppinion.
Until and unless those happen, I recommend we bury this forum.
Everyone happy, cause if you look 3 pages back, I was saying to **** it all and wait till Devrous gets back should he decide to do so.
You know, "I told you so" just doesnt quite say it.

It does seem rather strange.  If it was a matter of his computer being well and truly fried, and him not having the money to replace it, you'd think he could at least manage to stop by a friend's house or a public library and give the occasional status update.  Hell, even Burger Kings have free workstations these days.  I know that I start suffering withdrawal if I'm offline for just a few days...several months would kill me. :p
