Title: 2d ship models (top view)
Post by: Azure on November 24, 2014, 06:35:08 am
Heya all!

In my spare time I am currently working on a little Flash game where you fly a capital ship and shoot down enemy units and asteroids. I want to make it FS themed, but for this I would need top view of the ship models. I found this view for only some ships (like the Aeolus).

I remember that before we were able to see a 2d representation of the small ships in the loadout screen. Is there any way to get these images? As for capital ships - if such images do not exist yet, what would be the best way to create them?

Do a screen shot from the top down camera in Fred 2. You can get ALL ships that way.

I thought about that, but as I remember, the lighting in the editor was not good and the new graphics were not available there. Did this change?

Use the screenshot script, where you can do a lot of crazy camera stuff and so on ingame.

 - The two methods with the most control of camera angle would be FRED2 or PCS2
 - Next would be the F3 option at the main hall
 - Lastly you can create a mission for the purpose but this would be tricky to say the least

If you are willing to invest more time then loading the ships into PCS2 you can export them to dae and import the ships to 3D modeling software (2 Free options would be Blender or Wings 3D)

One final note, all of FS2's IP related content is now wholly owned by Interplay and as the recent C&D to Sol Contingency over the Decent related content proves they are not afraid to get trigger happy with the lawyers

Sol Contingency was a whole different matter. That was going to lead to a complete Descent remake iirc. A C&D there, while a sick move given Descent's age, makes more sense than a random C&D to a flash game that includes some FS IP elements.

If Interplay is going to C&D anything FS related, it's going to be FSPort or ST:R.

I am not worried about legal issues, but thank you for the warning. Might drop an email to Interplay just to make sure there is no problem with using screenshots from their game.

Using the main hall library is a good idea. I didn't think of that. As I remember it used the very same little animations as the loading screen.
I did not use PCS2 before, so I will try to stick with what I know for now :)

Thank you all for the help!

I can't seem to find the top down camera. How do I get at it?

If memory serves it's 5 on they keypad. If not I recommend the Fred help docs.

Alternatively you can rotate the camera to roughly point straight down and then hit ctrl+L to align it, which is how I usually do it for briefing stages
