Title: Ongoing connectivity issues
Post by: Mongoose on April 24, 2017, 04:17:04 pm
I think pretty much all of us have been experiencing rolling downtime and/or obscene page load times over the past few weeks.  Any ideas on a root cause, or is the host just getting hammered with DDoS?

I've noticed many sites having unusual load times over the past few days... Dunno. Hlp has been particularly bad, though.

Could it be a Cloudfire thing? I'm getting frequent timeouts where it complains that the website is down but redirects to Cloudfire on a couple of sites.

Out of curiosity, was the HLP connection speed worse, better, or the same prior to the email issue getting fixed?

When the server went down, and took down the email, it also took down a few processes that are used to maintain web traffic.  I restarted them at the same time as I restarted email, but I wonder if they're not working right.

It was much better then.  I wasn't experiencing any noticeable frequently-occurring issues before that point.

I would say no.  Varnish wouldn't be causing connectivity errors.  Looking at a few logs, it does seem that someone from Asia Pacific Network area was doing some scanning (UDP: bad checksum. From 122.224.153.109:16587 to 96.31.94.83 on various ports) about a week ago, which might have affected some things.  But otherwise no, the mentioned processes would have had to really hog the CPU for them to affect anything.

I've been getting 502 errors and long loading times for a couple of weeks now.

I just fixed a runaway log file that Axem brought to my attention.  That could have been causing the slowdowns.  See if it's any different now.

No real change.  Still getting occasional slowdowns and 502 errors.

Still a little bit sluggish, but much better here so far.

Same here, no more 502s but sometimes respone time is still sluggish.

I'm having login issues. It's as if my cookie got culled daily, and I have to enter my PW twice before I can log in. Is this related, or a separate issue?

I have no such problems with Facebook, Wikipedia etc.

My experience has been that HLP will have weird issues randomly (usually really long page load times).  It does eventually load, though, with the exception of a rare CloudFlare error (that will go away with a refresh).

Today it's not having issues (so far).
