Epic, epic mod... and again completely stand-alone. These guys are basically converting the re-imagined TV series to the FSO engine, complete with a re-written physics engine to emulate the ships in the series, and some BADASS models. Think the most epic moments of BSG (Finding the pegasus, fleets of baseships firing nukes while supported by swarms of fighters, the hwole shebang).
 
There is currently only a demo of this on the site, but the full release is most definately live and well, and is scheduled for some time pretty soon.

hello everybody, i am new here, and i am trying to install the open source project for the first time today
i use the automated installer, which downloaded all the files i need for a couple of hours, and now it says its working for a couple of hours

can someone give a rough timeframe how long it needs till its finished? including downloading its working for about 8 hours now

nice place by the way and it is really cool that people do amazing things like the open source project and tions of mods and everything, be proud guys!

Well, if you opted to get everything, you are downloading gigabytes of data. Depending on your connection, the download may take quite a bit of time.

yes i opted to get everything, but downloading seems done since a couple of hours, maybe 3 or more, since then it says "working"
is that a reasonable time? i dont want to hurry the installer if you know what i mean, if it takes so much time it takes so much time and i am good, but i am worried it kind of crashed or something, it still says  "working" and the blue line goes left and right

Give it more hours, let's see what happens. I suspect it's still working...

Left and right?  That sounds like the unreleased version of the installer, which you shouldn't have.  Can you post a screenshot?

Howdy. Another noob here. So far, so good. The installer has been working merrily away for about an hour so far. By the way, the progress bar on mine is only going left > right, don't know if that helps.

Just wanted to say a big thanks for the noob-friendly instructions and to al those still out there supporting an epic game. Played it years ago when it first came out, put it back on my pc a month ago for old times sake, blew them missions, then looked for downloads of user campaigns and came across THIS! OMG!

Not gonna ask any noob questions....yet! I'll be patient and leave the d/l overnight if necessary.

No noob questions needed in fact.

Been on it now for a couple of hours. Tested both FS1 and 2 (with seperate player names for each) and both work fine.

The graphics are just .... well, unbelievable!!! Thanks for the amazingly helpful instructions.

  Yeah.... ok.    Vanilla has it's own little spot, but I consider FSO to be Vanilla unleashed from the chain of the technological limitations of ~2000 era graphics.  You know... 16MB 3dfx Voodoos and all that.

Just thought that I'd point out that the July '11 PC Gamer points directly to this thread in its FreeSpace 2 feature, so we might want to double/triplecheck that everything's working

I recently decided to get back into this. I noticed on the installer the "bare minimum" and "bare minimum w/ Media VP's" options don't work because the installer tries to install the 3.6.10 executable, when it should install 3.6.12. Thank goodness "The Works" option is customizable.

I just purchased FS 1 and 2 for GOG and installed it. After installing FSO my directory to run the game is C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\GOG.com Downloads\freespace_2\fs2_open_3_6_12r_INF.exe.

I have heard that there are issues with Win 7 and program files, so I moved it around but no luck. The game is a legal version which seems to be most people’s problem so I'm not sure what to do next. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Could you post a screenshot of your FreeSpace Open folder?
