Hello everyone, I am having trouble and I know this topic has been discussed but I can’t seem to fix it. I am having the “web cursor bitmap not found” error. I just purchased FS 1 and 2 for GOG and installed it. After installing FSO my directory to run the game is C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\GOG.com Downloads\freespace_2\fs2_open_3_6_12r_INF.exe.

I have heard that there are issues with Win 7 and program files, so I moved it around but no luck. The game is a legal version which seems to be most people’s problem so I'm not sure what to do next. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

There are also issues with "Documents". That is why simple and short paths are recommended, and C:\Games\freespace2\ in particular. Or D:\ or whatever partition you want to use.

Furthermore, the GOG installer installs (or at least used to install) the game a bit strangely. If you opted, for example, to install it to C:\games\freespace2\ , it would actually install to C:\games\freespace2\freespace 2\ or something like that. And you can get that error message if you've installed FSO stuff into the upper \freespace2\ directory. The FSO executables and the Launcher must be in the folder that has .vp files, FS2.exe and Freespace2.exe, among other files.

Hi guys. Im a long time fan of Decent Freespace and as everyone I got the urge to play it yet again and try out all the various of mods thats been developed aswell..

I've gone through the FS 2 open installation and everything seems to be work alright but one thing. In my cutscenes the sound is behind by a couple of seconds. I'm clueless to could cause this problem. Anyone of you have had a similar problem and found a solution?

EDIT: Closed down the game to write the above and when I tried again there was nothing wrong.
However, a new problem as arrisen. Ingame the sound will sometimes vanish and come back. The background music is always there but fx the sound from the instructor or lasers/explosion ect will disappear and reappear whenever it feels like it. Also the sound in the menu is not working. The background music is there but hovering over the gates to campaign or options ect gives no sound. Any solution?

Hey all, just bought the GoG version, installed, used the downloader/installer for FSO. I can play FS2 on its own fine (looks the same). I followed the instructions here, but ever time i configure the launcher and hit "run" instant freeze (whole machine) forcing a manual restart. I have tried hitting "OK" then launching via the EXE manually, but it just launches the old FS2 launcher, or the game itself (2 executables in the folder). Im out of ideas, tried it as "admin", ran a Crossfire profile to disable my second card.
System is win7 X64 if that matters, and the 2 GPU's are the only thing i could think would matter. Thanks!

I tried again, following the directions more carefully (selecting the R vs. D or D vs. R exe, whichever, and actually disabled crossfire before launching) and its working! blue planet anyways, now im stuck starting the Duke mission with 12% hull integrity.

Game plays awesome!

Thanks a bunch for putting up this guide & maintaining it, installation proceeded painlessly (except 1024x768 Command Briefing Animations which had an install error which may be why the game halts for me sometimes).

The only thing (ha!) that confuses me is how to tell when it's necessary to change pilots. You write:

I am told that using the same pilot profile across different mods can can cause erratic behaviour in-game. Go to the pilot selection room from within the game and click the "Clone" button to create a duplicate of your pilot profile, and rename it to reflect the mod you are running (eg: RICHDOG FS1), and do this for each mod, ensuring you load the correct profile each time in each different mod.

So I'd like to be able to work out what counts as different mods and what merely counts as "yet another" campaign within the same mod.

E.g. FS Port comes with three campaigns, so is it OK to use the same pilot for these? Can this pilot then be reused in Silent Threat: Reborn? What about any other canpaign which has FS Port as a requirement?

Oh, and if this info is already available somewhere, a link would be much appreciated.

In most cases, you can use the same pilot across different mods provided you only play one campaign at a time.  This means that you must start a campaign and play it through to completion before choosing another campaign.  The vast majority of problems happen when a user decides in the middle of a campaign that he wants to temporarily try a different one.  If he later goes back to the original campaign, all kinds of settings will be messed up.

Note also that some campaigns reveal different ships and weapons in the tech room over the course of the game.  Unless the campaign uses the reset-tech-database sexp (which unfortunately is pretty rare), then you will be required to start the campaign with a new pilot in order for the tech database to show the appropriate entries.

Yeah, the multiple-pilot warnings seem to be somewhat overstated, at least if you avoid jumping between in-progress campaigns: I used the same pilot file for a few years across multiple campaigns without ever running into a problem.  (That's no guarantee that it won't die on me tomorrow, though. ) More recently, I've made a few clones for the major mod groups out there: one for Port campaigns, one for Blue Planet, one for general non-modded stuff, etc.  As soon as the new pilot code hits trunk, though, we shouldn't have to worry about it anymore.

Question out of curiosity: If one completes Mod A, switches to Mod B, completes Mod B and wants to play a mission in Mod A via Mission Simulator after switching to Mod A, can it be done on the same pilot without any problems or errors occurring?

With Antipodes 8 you can since, as I understand it, it saves a different file for each mod, even for the same pilot. Without Ant8... with a fair amount of luck you wont corrupt the file I guess.

To summarize, I could go Antipodes 8 (the new pilot code which looks very promising imo) unless the currently open crash issues affect me, live with the tech database inconsistencies (I assume there will never be missing entries) and trust Ant8 will hit trunk at some point. And then I'd only ever need one pilot, that'd be nice.

It will hit Ant8, but it's still experimental and subject to changes, so pilot files made using it might still be subject to change, or corruption, etc.  Once it's final, you should be good though.

So, I'm trying the installer for the 1st time, and I repeatedly get download errors with the 1024x768 Command Briefing Animations (Download Mirror 1 (http://www.lunardigitalproductions.com/downloads/fs1/fsport/) has failed) and with Shivans (Download Mirror 1 (http://freespacemods.net/files/installer_files/campaigns/) has failed). Is the installer looking for the wrong filenames?
