You can put custom images (supported format) into data/players/images. To override the old ones you need to know how they are named in retail though.

Pretty sure they had to be in .pcx format and at a very specific tiny resolution or FS Engine will have a fit. if i recall correctly

Given FS2 is open sourced, couldn't that be changed to support more modern image formats?
