Crash + BSOD + pilot disappeared (fsport 3.2 + mediavps 3.6.12)
I was playing through the new fsport 3.2 (with mediavps 3.6.12).  I have completed the 3.1.1 version (with mediavps 3.6.10) very recently, but I wanted to see what was improved.  Everything was fine, until that mission where you have to destroy the Eva (Evangelist).

Less than 30secs into the mission, while I was using afterburners to get into position, the game froze.  The afterburner sound continued playing, but nothing would move ingame.  I ctrl+alt+del'd my way out of the game and got a not-so-surprising Windows message: the program encountered problems and must be closed.  So I closed it.  However, even after closing it, the afterburner sound continued playing and wouldn't stop.  I tried playing music to see if another sound would make it notice it was obsolete, but it didn't work.

Next thing I though: "if I relaunch the game, maybe using that same sound file again could make it stop...?  Oh well, let's try... worst case, I simply reboot the computer and it'll be fine."  BAD IDEA.  At the start of the mission, I got a BSOD: PROCESS HAS LOCKED PAGES o.O  Oh well, I was pretty much about to reboot anyways... no big deal I guess...  note that the afterburner sound was playing over the BSOD.  lol.

After the reboot, I launch the game, and find out that the pilot list is empty, so I'm prompted to write a new name.  WHAT???  I had only one pilot, and only used it for fsport, and he's gone.

Sooooo...  Any idea what happened here?  Any chance of getting my pilot back (I don't want to go through all those missions for a 3rd time now >_> ).  And if my pilot's dead forever, any way of not replaying all the missions to get there again? ^^"

Please read the FSO FAQ stickied here, and post an fs2_open.log.

While I appreciate your desire to help me, you forgot about an important point when replying:

Quote from: fs2_open.log / debug log  FAQ
Still in the Launcher, select the debug build and run it. Remember to APPLY the changes! If you've been experiencing crashes, do exactly what you've done previously, up until it crashes.

I won't play through 18 missions for a 3rd time "hoping" that the crash occurs again at number 19 so I lose everything again to get a proper log; I need a quick way to directly play that mission.

SYSTEM SPECS
Win7 64 bits family edition
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB hd

LOG
Waiting for answer on how to make one in this specific case.

Thanks for trying to help me; I'll do my best to provide you with accurate information (assuming the crash is repeatable), but I need help to be able to do this.

Re: Crash + BSOD + pilot disappeared (fsport 3.2 + mediavps 3.6.12)
Ahem. "Doing the same thing you did before", in this case, means playing the mission again with a debug build. You can load up the mission in the techroom even with a new pilot by pressing Ctrl-Shift-S in the mission simulator. This will unlock every campaign mission.

As for the pilot file, if the game cannot read it, chances are it's corrupted beyond repair.

Re: Crash + BSOD + pilot disappeared (fsport 3.2 + mediavps 3.6.12)
Thanks, that's the kind of info I needed.

I started the mission with my new pilot.  While loading, I got 2 warnings that may or may not be related.  I guess you can find them in the log file, but they are:
- Couldn't open texture 'bomber01-00b' referenced by model 'bomber01.pof'
- Couldn't open texture 'shieldhit01a' referenced by model 'bomber01.pof'

Then I proceeded to play.  I used afterburners until I rammed the Eva on the first try.  On second try I reached the Eva, then I flew around her spamming afterburners for a while.  Nothing happened.  Note that when the game crashed yesterday, it happened way before I even reached the Eva (first seconds of the game).

Anyways, today's log is attached to this post.  Don't know if it will be useful since the crash seemed pretty random >_>

Re: Crash + BSOD + pilot disappeared (fsport 3.2 + mediavps 3.6.12)
It's been 4 days since I've posted my logs (attachment in previous post) as I was asked to do, but no one gave me feedback.  I haven't played the game since then because of this, so I'd like to sort out this issue and get back playing soon.

Please, could one of you take a look at the log file to see if there is any clue about what happened in it?

Sorry, completely forgot about this. I'll bump it over to the FSPort board, as this seems to be an issue with that mod.

Re: Crash + BSOD + pilot disappeared (fsport 3.2 + mediavps 3.6.12)
Thanks, The E.

I just saw the topic below mine asking about whether or not to create a new pilot for this new fsport.  Most people recommend using a new one to stay on the safe side.  However, I used the same pilot that had completed fsport 3.1.1 a few days before.  Just thought I'd mention this, as I have no idea if it may be related or not to what happened.

Could just be a fluke. :nervous: FreeSpace isn't known to cause the BSOD.

Nothing abnormal in the log file?  Are these warnings supposed to be there?

Should I resume playing hoping it doesn't happen again? ^^"

Wait... if nothing is abnormal in the log file... what warnings are you talking about?

Are you using FSO 3.6.12d or 3.6.12r?

Re: Crash + BSOD + pilot disappeared (fsport 3.2 + mediavps 3.6.12)
If no one else finds any problems with the game, you may want to update your graphics and sound drivers to the latest available from their respective manufacturers.  If you look up your mobo specs on the manufacturer's website, it should tell you who made your sound card.  Although usually the mobo manufacturer keeps the sound drivers up to date for a few years, so you can probably just download them from there.

As I said earlier, these warnings pop up when loading the mission.  I'm using 3.6.12d, since I was asked to and it's the only way I know to have warnings displayed.

Nobody ever said nothing was abnormal in the log file ^^"  I just asked whether it was or not.  I still don't know since nobody gave me feedback about the log file yet.

@jr2: You made me notice that I forgot to mention my sound card in system specs:
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4

I can try to look for new drivers, but those I have are certainly not old =/ (I updated everything about 3 months ago).

And you're very definitely running FSO 3.6.12 Release Inferno, right?

Yes, when I'm not trying to see warning messages, I run fs2_open_3_6_12r_INF_SSE2.exe (my processor can handle SSE2).  Seems the log file contains lots of errors... =/

To someone who doesn't know how to read fs2_open.logs, maybe. To someone who can, the only errors that matter are those "DDS ERROR" thingies.

Mph.  Can you explain why the "unable to parse tbm" errors aren't significant?  I don't know the internals of FSO (not a coder), but I do know what the tables do and have a pretty good handle on how FS handles its directory tree (or I used to anyways, if I thought for a while I could prolly remember it all).  So... can you explain to a non-coder who knows a bit about how FS modding works ... exactly what is it saying when it complains about not being able to parse the tbm files?

Code: [Select]
Wokka!  Error opening file (scripting.tbl)!
TABLES: Unable to parse 'scripting.tbl'!  Error code = 5.

scripting.tbl is an FSO feature that is almost never used. Most people use -sct tbms to enable scripts. Not being able to parse it is not fatal, as it is entirely optional.

Code: [Select]
Wokka!  Error opening file (interface.tbl)!
WMCGUI: Unable to parse 'interface.tbl'!  Error code = 5.

interface.tbl is an FSO feature that is NEVER used. Reason being that, at the moment, it doesn't do anything. WMCoolmon added this to trunk in a severely unfinished state.

Code: [Select]
Wokka!  Error opening file (armor.tbl)!
TABLES: Unable to parse 'armor.tbl'!  Error code = 5.

Armor.tbl is an FSO feature that, much like scripting, is most often used via -amr tbms. Not having either is, again, not fatal, as it's entirely optional.
