Ok, I am sitting around thinking about stuff tonight - and I realized that there are some mods out there that many would consider some of the "Best of FreeSpace 2" that I've never played. _MANY_ People have never played them.
A simple solution came to my mind: a big package of the BEST MODS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There will be four Categories in the "Best of FreeSpace 2"
Category 1: Completed Mods that do not use any SCP features
Category 2: Completed Mods that support the SCP
Category 3: Up-and coming mods [incomplete ones that look like they're going to become all stars]
Category 4: Iteratively versioned mods - ie mods that are not "released all at once" - but in stages
note: completed means they are certified final release (All episodes released, etc) - this disqualifies The Babylon Project unfortunately - hence why category 4 exists. --
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We also need to elect a judging panel - and since I came up with the idea I reserve the right to lead that panel. Panel Nominations will take place in THIS THREAD the four most nominated people that are willing to put time into this project will be the board members. If those board members wish we can add more members from the nomination list as needed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the Judging Panel is assembled we will have mods nominated for the categories above - the top 15 to 20 mods from each category will be judged - and the best ones will be put into Mod Packs. To use the mod packs you will be required to have the SCP executeable - primarily for using the "mod" subsystem so you can have all the mods simultaenously installed without problems - but also because many of the new features automatically improve the visuals without requiring special data from the mod authors.
The category 4 mod pack will be updated from time to time to reflect changes.
Mods in category 3 will be judged when released - if they pass they will be added to the mod pack of the proper category.
The mods in the package will be placed in VPs when possible. This saves harddrive space, enables easier install/uninstall/update. So all the main game data will be in vp files - naming convention to be determined possible "BoFS2-[modname]-[subpack]-[version].vp" - so Derelict would be BoFS2-Derelict-Core-1_0.vp and BoFS2-Derelict-Sound-1_0.vp for example [just pulled names outta my head there].
Updates will be available as patches - via the same NSIS installer tempate I wrote for The Babylon Project. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOMINATE YOUR CANDIDATES FOR THE JUDGING PANEL

this time period is subject to extension at my descretion
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I personally nominate
Venom

Tolwyn
IceFire
Bobboau
Snipes (Raa Tor'h)
Inquisitor
and there are some others that if their names came to mind right now I'd nominate.

I'd also suggest that this post be stickied. Something else I was thinking about as far as the Modpack is concerned. You were a bit unclear as to whether the modpack would include the entire download for each winning mod, or whether the pack would instead contain a few select missions from each mod... kind of a sampler. In addition, perhaps you could make this a periodic event, say 1, 2, or 4 times a year. It might even push some mods in progress to get their work done so that they can come out in time to qualify... kind of like the way movies will try to make it for a certain date to qualify for an Oscar. Hey, you could even have an award image that winning mods can place on their main page. You could even (eventually) have categories like "Most promissing mod or campaign by a first time designer." :D
Later!

Stuck, I'm curious to see where this leads...
I think it has real potential - but perhaps you shouldn't get ahead of yourself with the SCP. I *do* speak for myself when I say that as an end user I'd rather have a fully polished, working, set of mods than some that are kinda buggy WIPs like the SCP is right now. (However as a modder I'm more than happy to play with the SCP at the moment.. heh).
Just chucking the idea up. I love the idea of mod packages as they are a great way to draw new folk into whats going on around here.

the SCP is really only required if you want convient mod management - if you really want to avoid the SCP [just like i want to avoid buggy mods] then you can use the whole rename/folder/copy files thing going on - and i could theorectically rig up FreeSpace 2 Package Manager (yeah.... haven't heard much about that program since i wrote it ages ago!) definitions that work it automatically.... atleast i think i can without rewriting code.

I would rather use the new launcher.
You know you can actually run the old FS2.exe too.
BTW 3.5 is a quite stabile build, with the exception of multiplayer and the movies in mve format which were ommited.
Since this is a mod pack I doubt anyone would be making mve files for their own campaign, and you can't play mods online anyway, only SCP will allow you to do that.

the "-mod" feature isn't in FS2 1.2 - only in FS2 Open
MVEs will never return - we have AVI support not
Multiplayer is almost comleted

sounds good idea:)
-
ok... so start nominating candidates already!
-
i nominate these
Styxx
Tolwyn
IceFire
Bobboau
Snipes (Raa Tor'h)
Inquisitor
Galactic Emperor
Woomeister
-
i like the idea a lot, and i nominate Setekh and Inquisitor.
-
I nominate:
Tolwyn:yes:
IceFire:yes:
Inquisitor:yes:
-
I think it would be quite good if someone could post which mods the different persons are working on...because I have a very very bad namememory.
-
that would be helpful
-
well, I am working mainly on Wing Commander Saga (and on a few other mods, but since they are not for FS2, this fact has no importance)...
Greetings Tolwyn

*waits for his completed mod to be nominated*

isn't it already done? :D

But I fit under Category 2...

But I fit under Category 2...
But this thread is for Panel Nominations, so you need to wait for the actual MOD Nominations thread or whatever.
-
*sighs* The deadline has been extended to when ever I think enough people have replied to this thread for it to be accurate!
-
Well since the others dosn't tell me what they are doing I nominate the only one I know closer ->
Tolwyn from WC Saga
-
Does this only deal with whole campain mods, or are you going to include single, stand alone stuff, like lone ships, missions etc?
Don't really know who to nominate, but I guess:
Vemon (modelling master)
Aldo_14 (same as above)
Karajorma
Bobboau (to see if SCP stuff is used well)
-
More or less whole campaign mods - if there is a large "mod" that doesn't havem issions for it _yet_ but is really cool it can be considered

fine, I nominate that guy. what's his face...uh...oh yeah, Carl.
-
...I was nominated? And Gloriano seconded it...? Meep.
-
Please don't nominate me, I have neither the time nor machine to even play FS2 ( well, to enjoy playing it, even if it kind of runs... ), so I haven't played anything for a year ( yup, can't even play inferno, when i'am a staffer, you see, no, no that's not furustrating at all :doubt: ).
I obviously can't judge things I haven't played.
-
Woomeister and Crew for making what essentially is FS3, and for those who don't know what I am talking about check out INFERNO NOW!
Also TBP team!
-
Actually, I think I would nominate Carl and Turnsky for image content/texturing etc.
Aldo and probs Snipes for modelling skillz (would nominate Venom, but he'd just un-nominate himself)
Kalfireth and Setekh for playability and general 'coolness' assesment, since they would not allow ego to get in the way of judgement.
Flipside :D
-
...for modelling skillz? What skillz have me?:p
I think Flipside would do well also in the story line field, as I've never actually seen a bad word from him...
-
amazing how little attention my initiatives get
-
:P I pay attention to you.
-
@Kazan,
Respect!
Because we don't go around shouting, doesn't mean we don't appreciate. To each his own.
-
@Keravnos: WTFH are you talking about
I asked people for nomations to the judging board, and i barely get a response -- if I a large project initiative like this gets so little attention all i can conclude is that nobody is interested and that i should scuttle the idea

I really understand you:(
btw, my names are
bobbau
icefire
aldo
galactic emperor
karajoma
sandwich
thunder
black wolf
inquisitor
mikhael
-if avaiable- tomcat
they should be able to cover every possible aspect, right?
-
i nominate FSF Ashrak.
You don't need anyone else.
-
Oh and it's a good idea. The collection of great mods mod has been a long time coming. Make sure you get lots of Aldo and Venom's stuff in there.
-
*bump*
This is a good idea...
Go:
Setekh
Galactic Emperor
Bobb
Kalfireth
yeah...this is a good idea...respond...
-
... No replies in a month, eh?
I suggest you make some sort of SCP mod manager *Cough* and allow user ratings and the like. You could make it an extention of the site. Basically a mod database. Have the top ten or so (as long they get a rating above something) of each section advertised as the best of the section. o.O Then take the top ten of those and make them the best mods of FS2. This way they are judged by everyone and dynamic, compared to having them judged at one time. All you would need is a coder.
-
john you mean like my Red Faction Mod Manager that never really got used?

*ears suddenly ignite*
WHAT?!;)
-
Dunno.
And capitilize my name. I'd appreciate it.
-
*****ing over capilization john? jeeze
-
I am an ass. =)
-
well now...it seems that this great initiative from Kazan is meant to die a premature death...too bad but to be expected I think, I am afraid that most folks have given up waiting for a replacement engine that really adds something to the game besides looks...
I am almost done playing the FS2 campaign (1st time I might add) and personally I am more than dissapointed, FS1 was heaps better than this shamefull attempt of a sequel...so some good MODs would have been welcome (too many end up in dead links or unfinished projects...)
but, if I had to nominate who should be in the panel...
take any member who has been here from the days of FDL/FS1, chuck'm in a hat and just pull out as many as you need...I mean, if they are still around after that long a period, they've proven their dedication...(excluding me, myself and I, ofcourse)
-
I nominate everyone who has ever made an ub3r ship that does NOT make FS2 give 5FPS.
-
So is this officially dead or are we going for it? If we are going for it, i nominate Styxx, Steak, Shrike, Scefire (he knows who he is). There......the cult of the one true S rides again.....
-
it's fairly stalled.. since i was the only one who showed interest in running it - and i cannot be all things to all people
-
i thought it was a good idea when i read it, and i still think it is. I think that after all this time people have made the nominations htat they want to make. I have some questions though.....1st.....what is the criteria in each category? 2nd, for the mods that are super secret, and are there any that aren't, how do we judge for those that haven't been released? 3rd, i remember a thread a couple years ago where people were nominating "Legends" if you will. i can't remember the name of the thread, but Aldo was in there for modelling, I think Ace for fredding, things like that, will there be anything comparable to this?
As far as running things goes with this, i have no idea how it would even work, maybe explaining it to us simple folk would help ;)
-
only released mods are eligible
if you want to run the project be my guest - i'm going to be busy with other things
-
Have you gone insane?!
I nominate Lightspeed, for his amazing work on Shine 2.0, and his awesome engine effects (savior).
-
Into the Depths of Hell is a good campaign by Noise but only chapters 1 to 4 have been released, I think there are about 9 Chapters altogether.
-
Okay, this has been around for a year and a half with no responses for several months. I'm unstickying it.
-
noone nominated me :(
im gonna lock myself in the closet for the next 10 years.
