Just a random Q that got stuck on my head, after reading the other thread on best games that wowed you.
What games had the best intro or even trailer that got you really interested in playing it!
For me, it would have to be Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Einstein, Hitler, The Hell March, deadly!!!!!
Other worthy ones would be "World In Conflict" or "Republic: The Revolution"

Colony Wars 2: Vengeance had a very cool intro cutscene. Same thing for CW 3: Red Sun. :)

As for FS1 versus FS2,
I like everything in the FS1 intro but the guy's eyes. They should either have made them better-looking (considering they are so central to the movie), or not focuses on them so much (considering they are so bad-looking). Or a mix.
FS2's intro... well, let's just say it was my criticism of some scenes from it that earned me my custom title "I'm a spoiled n00b who expects every game to have 2008-era graphics". Of course, they changed it when 2009 came, but... whatever. The scenes were: the explosion of the GTB Medusa which is hit by a missile, and the fiery explosion as the Lucifer's beam impales the Orion. Oh, and the fire on the Faustus and on the Herc as it spiraled to its cloudy demise.
Either way, they're both pretty good.
As for intros in general:

- The teaser for StarCraft II with Zeratul
- Oh yeah, Raptor was good (for its time)
- Descent 3, for the most part

Empire Earth - I always really liked the intro... even better than the game sometimes.
FreeSpace - Favorite intro, favorite game.
Tachyon - I seriously think it was because of the guy looking out into space from a window.
Civ III - It was a cool spirally thing of history.
Assassin's Creed - Disappearing into the crowed of monks, didn't see that coming!
That's all that come to mind as far as intro's go.

Sword of the Stars: Born of Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijAYZimvpww). Scary as frak. The Zuul are some of the scariest and most evil bastards ever.
Starcraft: Brood War for awesome. I just wish I could equip my Marines with missile launchers like they had in the intro.
Freespace for atmosphere.
Total Annihilation. Who doesn't like a war that has lasted for millennia and consumed the resources of an entire galaxy?
Nothing else has really ever got my attention. Dawn of War's intro was cool, but marred by the poor tactics the Blood Ravens displayed. A tactical squad should never leave cover to charge a mob of Slugga Boyz, especially if they have an assault-cannon-equipped Dreadnought there with them.

FS1 gets my vote by some distance.

I'll jump on the FS1 bandwagon as well. Poor Lt. Ash's hysterics sent chills up my spine the first time, and every time afterwards. Descent II also gets a vote for the first true opening cinematic I can remember seeing, and Descent 3's made for an excellent resolution to the cliffhanger its predecessor left. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus also get nods for how they represented the beautifully cinematic atmospheres that each game was steeped in.

I always liked the intro to Oblivion, seemed very movie-esque, especially with the epic music and the pan over the city.
The FS intros are up there too.

Another one for Independence War 1. Simply superb all around and creating a perfect atmosphere for the actual game. - An intro without equal even today, imho.
It's really amazing how far along they were with animated characters and movie sequences already back in that day. ... and nowadays no one seems to care anymore about making a good intro anyways lol.
Also, Wing Commander 2-4 of course. Hard to beat the "big cinema feel" of these games. (and yes, i'm including WC2 in this. It was still 2d cutscenes, but already did include a fully featured storyline (unlike WC1). And the opening sequence was just awesome back in the day as well hehe)
As far as Freespace goes i found the Intros to be ok/decent, but nothing spectacular. Spectacular came later as you actually played heh.

FS2 for a more cinematic intro.

No love for Sins of a Solar Empire?
It's not so much about it's graphics (it is composed of "paintings" with the occasional moving bit), but the atmosphere. When the intro was over I was moved to say. "Wow...that was intense."

Yeah, although TA is allegedly great (haven't played it), that wasn't much of an intro.

guys you have to remember TA is early - mid 90s and for its time it was a very advanced intro in terms of graphics and the fact it was voiced over, if its generic its because of the number of times its been emulated sice by other games

Probably the original Dawn of War intro for the sheer atmosphere and capturing the zealousness of the Space Marines.
The SCII one, although the actual intro is quite boring, I can't help but admire the graphics.

Both FS intros are still among the best I have seen. Apart from those, some of my favorites are Mission Critical (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvm5EPUH_I8), C&C (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS9irxBAwb0) and Megarace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aBz9KjREdM), for varying reasons. :D

Picking one introduction (or anything, for that matter) as the 'best ever' is impossible. There are too many factors to take into consideration.

In hindsight, it's amazing how much effort was put into capturing the feel of the BT universe. At least within the game itself. Didn't it have lengthy excerpts from the sourcebooks and novels dealing with the War of Refusal?
Then again, those were the days when Jane's relaxed realism titles had manuals that were hundreds of pages in length, so...

Still the FS1 intro over here. The Lucifer appearing right in your face... as scary as Doom 3's central premise or even worse, if only for a few seconds...

Liked the opening intro in Descent II even though it was short.
Age of Empires had a cool intro as well.

Portal is legendary. Including legendary for this trailer.
Another brilliant trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-uncharted-2/50366). I do not only believe the game will obliterate any bar set by similar ones but also be the most cinematic action experience to date.
Back to intros:
Crysis has a mad intro. Or God of War titles of course. Blizzard's games usually have one too.
The Aquanox Series has brilliant cinematics and the intros are wonderful (although the english translation isn't very well done).

Gotta second that. Crysis' pre-rendered FMV stuck out like a sore thumb and its gameplay segments managed to actually make the game look bad (I don't know how they managed that.)

The FS1 intro is one of the most memorable video game experience I've ever had...
And the first time I saw it I was like 10 years old, scared the crap outa me. XD

I liked FS1's intro MUCH BETTER than FS2's. Everything was well polished, especially for that era...
...'cept Lieutenant Ash's eye!!! That eye still bothers me because it's ugly - just a texture! It should have been modeled and made shiny and stuff but NOPE... they just used that texture... other than that it was a great cutscene.
As far as "best ever", I don't really know. I can't decide :P

Remember at that time such a texture would have been . . . "shiny" at that point. In any case, the emphasis on the eye was required for the effect.
Don't worry, you're not the only one to complain about this. :p

I was actually not referring to that FMV video but to the first gameplay minutes. The airplane, the briefing, the parachuting part :)
