Title: Please Help, I can't get Blue Planet to Run from Launcher
Post by: freespace2maniac on July 09, 2010, 10:33:38 pm
Hi guys. I don't know what I'm doing with this... The game is awesome but I must have changed something in the launcher settings (features tab I think). Now I can't get my mods to run... Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Hmmm, I think a debug log will still be generated if you try to launch the game, but I'm not authority on that. Do you know what a debug build is? (it'll end in d, instead or r). Could you select that build in the launcher and run the game, then delve into your data/ directory and dig us up your fs2_open.log?

By the way, this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.0.html) might be of some use.

So, what exactly is your problem? Does the game just refuse to run, or?

Any mod at all?

Could you run a debug build by selecting a build ending in -d or -debug as your executable, then hitting run, going as far as you can, and then posting the 'fs2_open.log' file from /FreeSpace2/data?

That'll give us the info required to solve the problem.

Hey guys thanks for the advice. Yes I just did the "manly install" today after completely deleting the automated install. I actually got to see the earth in Blue Planet instead of a box with lines through it. The trouble I'm having now is getting the Blue Planet campaign to get past the video cutscene at the beginning. I will run the debug Inferno exe and see if it will shed some light on this....

Ah, yes well, Inferno builds are mandatory these days. :P

Could anyone tell me what file the debug file is? Also, in Blue Planet Age of Aquarius, the game stops when it tries to run the escape pod cutscene of the battle that led to the destruction of earth. Does this ring any bells? I'd love to skip it, but I'm not sure that's an option....

Yep, looks like you've got the right one.

This is really weird, and not a bug I've encountered before. Your Blue Planet install looks good, so I suspect it's not a problem with BP but more likely an incompatibility with your video card on FSOpen's part. But I could be wrong.

Could you go over to the Source Code Project forum, get 3.6.12 RC3 Inferno, and try using that?

Whoa, hang on. You've barely turned on anything in the launcher.

Please go in and enable, at least at the minimum, use 3D ship selection. I don't know if anything else is needed, but for your graphical pleasure you should also enable basically everything under the graphics tab except 'enable mipmaps' and 'disable scale to window in videos'. I also suggest 'use 3D warp' and 'warp flash'.

In addition, please move the mediavps files:

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\3610_Patch.vp' with a checksum of 0x07e72699
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\MV_Advanced.vp' with a checksum of 0xd06bf123
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\MV_Assets.vp' with a checksum of 0xc9e372bb

Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\MV_Music.vp' with a checksum of 0x4dbbbe96

into a dedicated directory called mediavps.

Also, you need not have any disks in your optical drives. Though having disks in your optical drives should not cause anything.

Yes! That was it, as soon as I turned on the graphic features it played the cutscene and went right on into the next mission. Bingo! Thanks for your help. Didn't know about the disc free play either, will have to try that! I moved the mediavp files into a new folder titled mediavp. It seems to be working perfectly now. Thanks for your help! Glad to know people out there support each other and it's great to have such awesome graphics with this game. I've had this game (orignal discs) since I bought it at Best Buy some ten years ago. Awesome work done since then! Thanks again for the help.

Lovely! Enjoy.

You've got the voices and all working, I assume?

General, yes the voices work, even some of the in flight videos of command work with the voices. I ran into another untimely snag however.... I was playing Blue Planet, every thing was fine... up until I docked with the Vishans. I read Commander Bei's report and greatly anticipated the following mission... and then nothing... clicking on Accept gave me a black screen with my cursor in white the only thing showing... I noticed when I reentered the same place in the campaign (hoping the outcome would be different and I could continue the game..) the screen glitched and came back during Commander Bei's report.... I don't know what all of this means.. I'm attaching the log file for your viewing pleasure..... and Thanks in advance for your help....

Turn on 'enable 3D ship selection' in the launcher (I think it might be under the 'gameplay' tab?). Tell me if it fixes itself.

I didn't see that option under the Gameplay ( at least not on the launcher I'm using ). I did however, turn on everything under gameplay and tried again.... Still had issues. So I took the disc out of the drive. Success! Go figure... these little things add up..... Thanks for your assistance General.

*facepalm*

These files:
Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\root_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xce10d76c
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\smarty_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xddeb3b1e
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\sparky_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x164fe65a
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\sparky_hi_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xa11d56f1
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\stu_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xd77da83a
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\tango1_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x4c25221e
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\tango2_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x86920b82
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\tango3_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x705e8d71
Found root pack 'D:\Extended Program Files\FreeSpace 2\mediavps\warble_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xd85c305d

NEED to be in the main FS2 directory. Only the 3610_patch.vp and the files with names starting with "MV_" need to be in the mediavps directory.

Third, you don't need to turn on _everything_ under gameplay (In fact, there are at least two flags you shouldn't turn on, namely the "Features for Wing Commander Saga" and the "Features for TBP" flags).

The flags you NEED to turn on are "Use Models for Ship Selection" and "Use models for Weapon Selection", both found under "Gameplay".

I will move them immediately! Thanks for your help! Side note: I did manage to play through to the end of Blue Planet, and I must say, it ROCKS! I look forward to the sequel. Anyone out there recommend a good MOD? One that a newbie like me might play through without much issue? Thanks!

Silent Threat Reborn, Transcend, and Derelict are all excellent. Windmills is fantastic. For a hard but fun time, The Procyon Insurgency.

Thanks General, are these in a series or all independent of each other? Got a link? I'm looking at a Freespace Mods page but I'm not sure if these are current..

@Dilmah G, thanks man, I appreciate the good intentions and the help... @General, I think I've played Transcend.. the one with the trippy space that makes you dizzy? I was wondering why I could never choose my ship when I played through it the first time......??

They are not a series, they're independent, and yes Transcend did have a subspace mission.

Silent Thread Reborn: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=59120.0
and the FS-Port, which you'll need to play it http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=58357.0
Procyon Insurgency: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=46817.0
Derelict: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=38019.0
Ancient-Shivan war: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67195.0 short, but interresting.
Uncharted Terretory: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67327.0  also short, but really good and with two alternate endings.
Transcend:http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=34098.0

If you don't mind downloading a few GB woth of stand-alone mod, "Fortune Hunters", "Drums of War", "Raiderwars", "Earth-Brakiri War" and "Dark Children" for TBP are very good as well. Though being TBP it will be a different experience from "normal" FreeSpace. Especially Dark Children, but I don't want to spoil the surprise  ;)
Here's their board: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=105.0 . You'll find pretty much everything in the stickies with the exception of the third part of Fortune Hunters, which you can find here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65861.0

I could go on for a while still. Why don't you browse around in the "missions and campaigns" forum here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=124.0  ;)
