Yes, you! Behind the keyboard!
For the next release, we want remodeled classic weapons along the lines of the Freespace Upgrade Project. I'm sick of those single-frame static loading pictures alongside the Avenger, Banshee and Tsunami, and I'm sure you are too.
Trouble is, there are a lot of them. Every FS1 primary cannon and secondary missile, from the ML-16 to the EMP Missile, needs to be remodeled. But with your help, we can do it!
If you can run Blender, you can help contribute. For the green-grid loading animations, there are no limits! Bad geometry, millions of faces, intersecting polies, it doesn't matter. Pack it up as a .3DS file and post it here and it'll be animated by yours truly. In-game missile models are also wanted but only if you already have experience with making POFs.
For my part I'm taking on the Disruptor Advanced and the Silent Threat weapons (Leech, Shield Breaker, Cluster Bomb and EMP.) Take your pick, they're all available. You can use the FS1 cbanis and SSanis for reference.

hi there...here is the interceptor as first test....
before converting i made single objects from every poly-selection as they are not converted :-/ nevertheless the result looks not so good :-(

Twist of Fate has a good looking ML-16.
Earth Defense have good looking Avenger and Prometheus. I have them included in my SAH upgrade.
I suppose that those mods would allow FSPort to use the effects.

Yea, Twist of Fate is awesome. I've only noticed that the Herc has an error in it's shield, as if from side, I could shoot it's hull down a lot with an ML-16.

Maybe someone else can collect the stuff, pack them up, and send them to the dead innactive Galemp ?

Thanks, Admiral Cheater, you've done us a great service. This is a taste of things to come, now that the Karnak is done.
I'm working on new textures for all the missiles so you don't actually have to worry about colorizing anything-- all I need is the plain ol' mesh. If you can take on any more missiles, I'll make animations from them and you'll have earned your name in the credits. :)

P.S. Add the particle spew for the Prometheus. The one that's used in Earth Defence Demo, unless they mind. And the Avenger effect in it looks good too.

Well, I can't see the nose, so I can't tell whether it's got the truncated star cut-off there or not.
Maybe you should adjust your render settings so that shadows render at 50% darkness instead of 100%.

No, they're definitely techroom models. Ingame models have to be much simpler... but I am going to get them looking better than they are.

If you need to see how they look, either try in-game, or I can send you a screenie ( not-full detail, cause I use the performance-increasing features, like img2dds and etc. ).

It's the only good Avenger effect. And didn't I tell you that my upgraded SAH effects are from ED ? Though you can get more effects from it.

Well, actually I am glad I downloaded these, because they're fun and I like what they've done. :)
But I think the weapon trails are definitely too much. I may use them for Huge turrets, but I think the classic FS1 weapons should be blobby.

The nose needs to look more angular, and the wings should not have the right angle piece. Otherwise good.

The nose of the Stiletto is actually a tiny Harbinger. :)
And I think the fins should have a little more of a scoop on the inside. Double-check the profile against the Command Brief animation.

The MX-50 ANI is now done... although like all user-made ANIs the background doesn't look exactly the same.

Do you even need an ani? Won't most people have ship_choice_3d turned on anyway?

For primaries, you still need the ANI.

I've updated MX50.zip with the in-game and tech models. It should be all set as soon as that missiles-not-rotating-around-the-center bug is fixed.
And just for good measure, a quick hack at the Interceptor using IceyJones' model. (http://pjfoliver.googlepages.com/interceptor.zip) It needs a little more texture work, and there's a bit of a glitch with the shadows, but this'll do for now. :)

EDIT: Oh, you're going by the images I posted. Those are done without the post-processing glow FX. The ANIs have a glow.

They're not the same style, size, or color, they don't loop correctly, and they have the text pre-rendered onto them instead of specified in the table entry.
Try it, by all means, but when I did I didn't like the results. :ick:

I don't think it's a case of simplicity. The model looks great in my opinion, but there are a few minor "issues" that stand out. For one, the opening at the front of the missile should have a larger radius than that of the missile's body. Second, the "bulge" that appears at a point just after the shadow on the missile's body should be symmetrical and smooth. From the original images, the bulge appears spherical, but I will leave that up to everyone else to confirm this. In your model, the section that I am referring to is wider at the rear than at the front, and this appears to be inconsistent with the original images. I am sure you have already checked out these images and used them to form the basis of your model, but here they are to illustrate my points:

The link in the first post has been updated with the Harbinger ANI and - at long last - the badly needed new Interceptor in-game model!

:yes: Amazing work as usual, GalEmp. Just one thing ... the Interceptor tech model is called Incerceptor-tech.pof, but in the tables, it is Interceptor_tech.pof (note the dash vs underscore).

Finally a normal interceptor model. I had to replace the original FS1/FSPort Interceptor model used in SAH with the Interceptor III from Earth Defence for a better view. Now I'll be able to change it to a canon looking model.

M87: Thanks for the feedback. About the opening at the front of the D-Missile, I thought the front was larger than the body at first but then I realized they are actually the same size in this picture:

I must confess, one thing i am looking foward to seeing is the Prometheus. It had a really cool design, but the Port has always used the FS2 version for the weapon ani so you never got to see it.

IIRC, those five shells are actually cluster bombs too (i think its referenced in the tech description but i might be wrong). The missile seperates, then they seperate to release the "cluster babies" (of which IIRC it releases 15 of).

That's a great looking Avenger, but it's a bit thin and the spot that you've left empty shouldn't be empty, I think.

About the empty bit, I left it empty because I wasn't sure what that part should look like. I can't really see it in the ani. What do you think should be there?

It actually is hard to tell, but you could probably get away with using a half-size cylinder or something. Don't forget the barrel things on the back end.

Screw canon, my version looks better than being held up by an attachment and cables (which will be done by Galemp since I can't figure out how to do them properly. :nervous:)

Create a circle & extrude for the straight bits, and then for the bends place the cursor as the centre of the curve you want to create in the pipe. From there in the edit buttons panel,look for the Mesh tools section. In there you want the "Spin" button, along with the degrees, clockwise/counterclockwise and steps settings. When you press spin, blender will extrude rotate the specified steps count in the clockwise/anticlockwise direction, to the degrees you specify. It uses your view direction as the axis of rotation though, so make sure you're looking at the circle side on for it to work right. :)
There are other ways of making cables, but this is the quickest and easiest one for neat piping.

Given that the FSPort is transitioning to FS1-style interface art and animations for the next release, we've got just about everything we need. Weapon loadout animations will be ripped from the FS1 weapon anis and edited appropriately, while ship animations will be redone in the FS1 style using the high-poly models (where available.)
All we really need now are in-game medium-poly models for some of the missiles. I'll let everyone know when the art is ready.

What about the primary weapon effects? Noone made anything here yet. I edited FSPort to use some of the weapon bitmaps that I found/collected ( ML-16, Avenger, Prometheus and Banshee ), though they're not like what I'd want to see in FSPort.

I could probably find them on my hard drive, package up and send them to you? Though I haven't made the effects, only found them in other mods and modified FSPort.
Also, I modified FSPort to use the HTL Lucifer ( unshielded though ) and the mediavp subspace maps. Plus edited the final mission to have some random music, but that's unimportant.

I didnt read the whole thread, too busy playing... Anyway, my 3d modeling skills arent great, but if there are any weapons still need doing I would be happy to give it a shot. If somebody could give me a link to the info about what format it need's to be in, and a sugestion of which weapon to do...... anyway im off to blow stuff up now.

We're good for interface weapons, since we're using the FS1-style ones. We do still need in-game missile models, though.

You can export your model to .3ds format, and anyone can open it. If you're feeling creative, give the Railgun or VLL a shot; if not, model the EMP missile, keeping it low poly. The tech room model can be up to 1000 polies but the ingame model ought to be less than 100.

Me again. What I'm about to post is totaly the wrong thing, and there is no texture, and it's not finished. However it is for two purposes.
1.. I've never used blender before. I need to learn how.
2.. I would like you guys to tell me if the quality was good enough that you would consider using it.(if it was a model of the right thing)
I expect there are un-needed verts, its getting late and I wanna go to bed!
If the model is good enough, please tell me where I could find source images. I'm guessing the "Tech" means for the tech room, and "fx" means in game. "fx" implies there is something more to it than just model + texture, and I don't have a clue about that stuff......
Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, but if there is some sort of faq about this stuff I cant find it.

'Tech' is the spinning model you see while you're assigning weapon loadouts. FX is in-game, and represents redrawing the bitmaps and/or adding particle effects like the MVPs do with the FS2 weapons.

Well heres what I have for the emp so far. Not sure if the bit at the back is meant to be fins or sort of round like I have done it. Any ideas? Am I even doing the right weapon? I found two versions of the emp in "sparky_fs2.vp" and another in "mv_models.vp"

Those are the low-poly models you're looking at. For reference you really want to see the FS1 animations. Do you have them?

Nice work so far. It could definitely pass for an in-game model.
Try to get a few more details on there, like the little capsules around the nose. And double check the proportions on the engines, I think it's more of an X than a square.
I'm also very happy to see it textured. :nod:

Yea, I was making it as the in game one. Figured it would be easier for me as I havent done 3d stuff for years. Is the 100 polys recomended or max? I'm at 84 faces at the moment, not sure how that translates to polys but I know its prety close to the limit. I was trying to get the x at the back and capsule things with the texture, instead of adding more faces.

Oh, that's just something rough to go by. You'll only be seeing it onscreen for a fraction of a second before it becomes tiny, after all, so use your discretion.

Edit 2: What exactly needs to be done other than the model itself? I can export with no problems (not that it matters in this case) from SU as .3ds, and you'll texture/animate it?

That looks nice, but I think it needs a little more hardware to attach it to something. Maybe take the back end and scale it up 200%. As it is, 80% of the length is taken up by the barrel; it should be prominent, but be about proportionate to the Maxim.

The back -does- need more, but i'm not entirely sure what to do with it. it's better than the shield breaker, at the very least.

It's a railgun... railguns aren't belt-fed... and in any case, it's an energy weapon... :doubt:
Just something big and chunky, like you'd find on the back of any other Terran weapon.

Edit: Ammo belt would be a little wierd, but a magazine could work I suppose. And Galemp, railguns shoot projectiles, as do coilguns, and convetional guns.

The Stiletto has some weird perspective on it from the camera being so close, maybe it's just that. Also I can't remember whether or not those little wiry things on the sides of the front part are in the original. Looks nice, although the fins look a little plain (which is probably realistic, since fins should be smooth and almost flat), and the wiry things could do with some experimentation.

Yeah, sorry about the perspective there. It gets really weird when the pivot is at the very end of a model.
These are done in orthographic mode, and should look better. As for the Harbinger on the nose... it's always been there. Ditto for the Harbinger engines on the back.

They're just screenshots taken with PCS. Those aren't to the same scale, and I don't know what FOV PCS uses.

Here's a request for help. Does anyone have experience in doing in-game weapon effects, such as those seen in the MVPs? I'd like to see some proposals for the FS1 primary weapons with the new particles, animated effects and impact effects.

Can't you just make a mishmash of the mediavp weapon effects? Modify them enough to get them look like high quality FS1 weaps, just using the mediavp effects. If you edit enough, they won't look like the FS2 versions.
In other words- simply use mediavp effects. Would save time, and still look good.

We have some nice stuff here. We need more animated particle effects, and I still need missile models.
The Fury and Tsunami are apparently done, but not yet posted. The EMP is in progress but nobody's touched the cluster bomb yet.

Looks wonderful! I particularly like the tail fins. I want to point out two things though:from the animations it looks like the middle is skinnier, then flares out at the front. I might be wrong, though, as it could simply be the shadow of the bomblets on the middle. Also, are those bomblets ovoid across their entire length? Or are they cylinders with rounded ends?

Thanks! The middle of the model is slightly skinnier at the back but it's not very noticeable. I'm not too sure if this is what it is supposed to be like. The bomblets are just cylinders with rounded ends.

Better. Make the main body longer so the back of the bulb looks a bit short and more sudden like shown in the .ani files.

For some reason I think the disruptor textures cold look.. grittier. The Tsunami just looks plain wierd, but so did the retail version :p

Cluster bomb... why does it look so weathered?
I can't really understand why a bomb would look weathered, particularly one that is invented shortly before you use it. I mean, it's a bomb. It doesn't get a lot of use. It gets fired and then it explodes. End of story. Less weathering please.

Who cares? You don't see it that much anyway, and weathering is better than just having a flat texture.

Avenger loses its sound, Vasudan Disruptor has the tech room Disruptor.ani as a projectile, All turret weapons don't change, Advanced Disruptor stays the same.

Disruptor.ani should not appear anywhere in a mission. You must have interface anis in the effects directory.
