Re: A celebration of Freespace
So I haven't played FSO for some months now, and those normal map shots nearly made me soil myself. Good stuff. :)

Re: A celebration of Freespace
Normal maps are just textures, right? Not glowmaps or anything?

  • A one hit wonder, you still want to touch this.
Re: A celebration of Freespace
Shivan ships already have glow maps, and around here you can get shivan ships with animated glow maps. So yeah normal maps are just special textures.
Every pilot's goal is to rise up in the ranks and go beyond their purpose to a place of command on a very big ship. Like the colossus; to baseball bat everyone.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
I though that all of the ships had glowmaps. The Shivan ones have animated glowmaps, though.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
How does one get the new versions of all these ships into their FS2 setup, and, will these be incorporated into the next set of mediavps?

Re: A celebration of Freespace
These aren't new ships, just new textures. Look for the normal maps topic, I haven't been able to find it.

EDIT: And when you do get the maps, put them in "FreeSpace2\mediavps\data\maps".

Just downloaded the new build and the normal maps pack -- placed it not in data\maps, but right in mediavps.  Running with -normal and -height options -- it's working and it looks amazing.

FSO/SCP is like one huge gift that keeps on giving.  KUDOS to everyone who made this possible, I've never seen the game looking so amazing.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
It's a damn shame that all you SCP coders (and related people) don't live in the same area, so you can't form your own game company (and get bought out by EA 3 years down the road, but whatever). :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
