Demo Reamde

1 Introduction

a) Plot

Fifteen years passed since destruction of shivan superdestroyer, Lucifer. Solar System has been izolated from othe systems, galactic worlds, and with Sol all of us - immates of Earth. GTA falled really fast when earth empires proclamed their independency. We didn't have to wait very long for a war between earth forces. Now free from blame civilian population is in a center of war between three giants: European Community (EC), United Russian Republics (URR) and Empire of God(EoG). But the worst still hasn't came yet...

b) Features of the game

•New models, older from previous FreeSpace series and new, high-res textures and normal maps
•Soundtrack from Conflict/Descent: FreeSpace

2 Bugs and solving/fixing

a) EC Turret Bug

*If fired lasers from EC vessels have mixed colors (lightblue and darkblue), you should download fs2_open official 3.6.9 release (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44291.0.html) and extract it into your Earth Defence demo folder. Next you should run Launcher, click on browse and select 3.6.9 release and then confirm. It should solve the problem but you won't have normal maps avaible. You could also search for other release if you'd like to solve problem and have normal maps enabled on this forum: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html

*If you have downloaded game after fs2_open 3.6.10 release you should use this release instead of that which was attatched into Earth Defence demo. It'll solve other problems if they were.

b) fs2_open 3.6.10 release

After release of fs2_open 3.6.10 it's highly recomended upgrading to that compilation or installing a patch. All instructions, information about patch/fs2_open 3.6.10 you can find here: http://game-warden.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=74

c) Do you have any questions? Did you find a bug?

If you have any questions about Earth Defence or you've found a bug you should just ask on our forums: http://game-warden.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=74

3 Multiplayer

If you want to play multiplayer battles you should download a configuration file whoch contain current adress of NetD server. It's here: http://www.game-warden.com/fs2open_pxo.cfg File should be copied to the data folder of your Earth Defence installation. Then you should register in NetD: http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/ and then fill in your nick and password ingame. Unfortunately, our tables aren't valided on NetD server, so your pilot stats won't be saved. We must prove that people will play ED on multiplayer. You can do it - All community and ED players by signing in this thread your will to play Earth Defence multiplayer.

You should also notice that Earth Defence mutliplayer missions still are Beta, so you can experieance some bugs.

Well, yeah I can't blame you for thinking that. ED uses a ton of INFA ships and is very similar in some respects.

ok, so this Earth Defense demo, said to be a prequel to Earth Defense full.  Is ED Full out?

Thanks for the release, btw.

Sweet.

But the first issue I saw in the first mission, right off the bat, was misspelled words. :nervous:

I tried to run the installer but it consistently freezes when it tries to install launcher6.ini.  I get a message saying that the installer is not responding, so I know it's not taking it's time.  Any ideas why it's freezing?

This is happening to me too.  Freezing at launcher6.ini, 70% in.

Oops, as I was typing this, it finally got past it.  But it went unresponsive for almost 2 minutes I think, I wasn't paying attention to it for most of the time.   It's not a very large file, any idea why it would do this?

Just ignore it. After launcher6.ini there's unpacked media.vp, 600 MB folder, so it takes some time to unpack it. Just leave computer and let it work for a few miute. I think t shoud take 2~3 minutes. And then enjoy ;)

Ok, I have a reproducible crash here. In the second mission, the game invariably crashes when I go into the ship selection. (Fatal error.)

It looks great otherwise, aside from hard to read text thanks to menu backgrounds and spelling errors. :)

c) Minimum system requiments

Wait, what? Are you saying that you have coders who have worked functional DirectX graphics into the engine, with normal map support as well? :eek2: :nervous:

If this really uses the FS2_Open SCP builds as they are, at least to my knowledge OpenGL is pretty much the only way to run everything properly, but if you have working D3D graphics, that's pretty awesome, given some compatibility issues between OpenGL and most integrated graphics processors...

I'd just like a clarification to this. I'll not be able to check this out right away, but I'll DL it as soon as I get home from the holidays at my parents'.

And of course, congratulations for the release! :)

There are no normal maps, by the way. There's no difference with fixed render pipeline on or off, except, of course, for the lighting effects.

We've included normal maps If you dont' believe yuo should open archive called media.vp and check maps folder. Normals are included. If they don't work for you, you should run any debug build which support normal maps and check debug log. Maybe you don't have GLSL techmlogy support?

I hate to say it, guys, but this doesn't strike me as very polished. I know this was developed by Polish modders, but this is riddled with spelling and grammar errors, and at one point one of my directives was in Polish. (Seriously guys, if using dashes was a crime, you'd be in jail for a long time. That many dashes isn't necessary.)

There are also various mapping errors, and yeah, there are normal maps, but they make everything almost black. :wtf:

I didn't even finish the first mission...it's just...ugly. Like someone put all that was good and holy from a number of different mods in a blender and set it on "puree". The fighters are too light and too manuverable to feel like I'm playing Freespace, and too small/hard to see causing the same problem. Fighting is only possible at point-blank range. The heatseekers are nearly useless because of the increased manuverablity of the fighters. This feels like a mod of BTRL, and that's not really a good thing.

Title: Re: XMAS RELEASE: Earth Defence Demo
Post by: G0atmaster on December 24, 2007, 07:05:50 pm
ugh, this one has been nothing short of a nightmare for me.  First, I installed, played ok.  I quit, and decided to check the launcher and see what features were set.  It said something about being forced to use the binary launcher, and after that, the game would crash every time I'd try to play it, in module atioglxx.dll.  Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work, I even deleted the contents of the directory after uninstalling, still nothing.  I finally got it to work by installing to a completely different directory.  After that, I too got the ship selection crash on mission 2, plus, it crashes when you try to go to the tech room.
Title: Re: XMAS RELEASE: Earth Defence Demo

Crashes in ship selection? Something is wrong. his was tested on four computers and we didn't have any rpoems with ship selection... Ty using other build. It could be 3.6.9 it should solve nearly all of the rpolems.

About "black" normal maps - I don't know what's wrong. Just remove in launcher everything in custom command lines and writ e-ambient_factor 75 It should solve those problems too.

About spacefight - You want to have a lot of kills? Don't be funny. We wanted this game to be a bit harder than FreeSpace 2.

hmm... That IS odd...  I do have 3.6.9.  Maybe my video drivers need an update.

About crashing techroom  - Check if you have in launcher selected "use models in ships selection" if no, select. It should fix those crashes.

I don't see any bugs with nmormal maps. Maybe it's just a SCP build bug. Here's some screens of ED with normal maps:

If you get crashes on ship selection check "use models for ship selection" in the gameplay tab of features. If it doesn't work then I don't know what went wrong.

Keep in mind that after installing to the default directory, once I tried to use the Launcher I couldn't run the game again until I installed to a completely different directory.  Are you sure it's safe?

Grammar was horrid...If you take that out of the picture, a lot of the campaign was fairly polished. Plenty of things to improve on, of course. The combat didn't really feel like Freespace to me, but I thought it was kind of fun and interesting. I thought having trails on almost all primaries was a bit unneeded, but it served to create a new less freespacish atmosphere. It wasn't Freespace, but it was a good example of another kind of slightly different gameplay this versatile engine is capable of. I would recommend that you hire on a native English speaker (or a fluent speaker at least) to redo the wording in missions or for the final release. I could tell what you wanted to say, but a lot of the language was a bit awkward.

I thought it was kind of fun...I liked the graphics as well (I know a lot of them are from other projects). The normal maps don't really work too well, but with the ambient settings I use I could hardly see them anyway.
Title: Re: XMAS RELEASE: Earth Defence Demo
Post by: Snail on December 25, 2007, 07:03:11 pm
I was supposed to do the grammar checking actually, but with only one week to do so and a hundred pages of essay to write (for school) I didn't have time to do so. On the very last day of production (23rd) we transferred this job to someone else. But as you could have guessed, they couldn't have done a good job in 1 day. There was also no testing at all, it was released the second it was finished, which explains a lot of the bugs.
Title: Re: XMAS RELEASE: Earth Defence Demo
Post by: Solatar on December 25, 2007, 07:29:21 pm
Well, I really do think the missions are well done. I think the thing that's turning everybody off is the grammar and little bugs here and there. For some reason people can't get past bad grammar.

...I thought it was fun...

Nice to hear your feedback and hear what are issues in Demo.

Now our team decided to open hiring. We're going to make a patch which will fix those problems that you've reported and make demo more enjoyable. What do we need:

-Native english speakers who will correct our BAD grammar
-Voice actors to make Demo release fully voice acted
-Tablers who will help in balancing and table correction
-Texturer who will help in fixing normal maps

Thanks for your intresst. Let's make ED Demo better and better. And then finish full version! :D

Any chance of a Mac-friendly release?

i will generate a Mac-friendly package this day and post the link where to dl here  :)

Edit:

here is it:

<a href="http://files.filefront.com/EarthDefense+Demo7z/;9334983;/fileinfo.html" title="EarthDefense_Demo.7z">EarthDefense_Demo.7z[/url]

This is a mac friendly package of the EARTH DEFENCE DEMO RELEASE (released 2007-12-24).

Requirements
------------

7z http://www.7-zip.org/ to extract the archive

Installation
------------

Extract the archive. You will find a folder

"EarthDefenseDemo" with the contents
   "copy contents to your cmdline_fso.cfg.txt"
   "FS2_Open-Xt_1208"
   "media.vp"
   "missions.vp"
   "original_readme.txt"
   "readme_first.txt"

You have to open your "cmdline_fso.cfg", you will find it in "<your home folder>/Library/FS_Open/data/".

Make a backup of your "cmdline_fso.cfg".
Now edit it. Remove everything in the "cmdline_fso.cfg" and paste the contents of "copy contents to your cmdline_fso.cfg.txt"
into it and save.

Then you can start "EarthDefenseDemo" by doubleclicking "FS2_Open-Xt_1208".

If you want to play your other FS2 campaigns again then restore your old "cmdline_fso.cfg" from the backup you've made.

Have fun!

@ shiv_pl: please add the Mac-friendly package to the first post. TNNX!

i never saw a problem with 7z. But the media.vp file in the archive is >680MByte. So it will take some time.
To create that archive took about 10-15 minutes.

Just be patient  ;)

I'm playing through the campaign, I find this MOD a nice way to use advanced effects for the FS Engine in a FS-ish environment

I noticed a few errors here and there, but it's still fantastic. One question, why are you using the low poly Tyr and Zagreus? There are high poly versions in INFA SA. You might ask for a permission and get the models(I think INFA SA will come out before the full version of ED, though).

I've got that ship selection crash bug too.  It seems to happen on every mission, except mission 1.  If you don't go to ship selection, you're fine.  Weapon selection causes you to get an image of a Ulysses.  I've tried this with the Use Ship Models flag on and off.

Well, graphically ED is pretty good and the combat in general is great. And I would recommend this campaign/mods for people who want Fast Paced action game. However, ED isn't great at all. A lot of grammar mistakes and the plot is very poor and for some missions, I've the impression to play a game made by a kid -_- But since you're not a native english, i could understand perhaps in polish, the way NPC speaks is more mature (but I don't know because I don't speak/read polish).

I got also some crash when trying to go into ship selection (but only for specific mission).

I don't think. I got slowdown when there are only 3 fighter ahead and an explosion.

I'm continuing to play the demo...I have to say that we're the opposite.

I mean, the fact that you rarely use "the" means that the Polish word for "the" might not exist(or its use is very limited). In Italian there are many words for "the"(il,lo,la,i,gli,le) and their use is a must. We even use them before "my","mine", "yours", etc...it doesn't happen in French and English. I have only recently started to reduce the my extensive use of "the".

I know it adds nothing to the topic but...it's just a way to show the influence of native languages ;)

-Native english speakers who will correct our BAD grammar

I could've done that if you had given me the missions earlier, and not all at once.

Can I sign up? :nervous:

Thanks for your intresst. Let's make ED Demo better and better. And then finish full version! :D

Nobody gives a crap about the ED Demo anymore. Finish the full version.

Correction:  Many people give a crap about the demo, seeing as we would like to play it beyond the second level.  So if you could kindly shut your cakehole and let them release a patch, a few of us would be very happy indeed.

P.S. I know text can't really infer emotion so well, but I meant that jovially, not as rudely as it reads.  I'm not wanting to start a flame war here.  So if you could read that in a joking tone, that'd be great!

Right, Polish has no articles. They have consonants instead, if I'm not much mistaken. Finnish has no articles either; we got the vowels. :p ;7

I dunno why (don't tell me that I have a weak config, I can run Supreme Commander with ~15 FPS :P) but it gives me ENORMOUS lag in tech room and during game. Any Idea why ??

...and yeah, we don't have anything like "the" in Poland. But we have a word begining with letter "K" that can be use as "the" successfuly. In fact...I use this word alot when I have lag of any kind  :ick:

Anyway, There is Europe, Russia, and Some kind of space Muslims. Does this means that the rest of civilized world (both Americas, Australia, Japan, China, India)  get the hell out of Sol as GTA before Lucifer incident??

So..."Allah" can't be translated in Polish....it's a fusion of "The" and "God"

I read that Italian is one of the few languages in which it is possible to translate "Allah"("Iddio", "Il" + "Dio").

Ehm...let's return On Topic ;)

Well, I got some serious issue with the build ED is using. My mouse is moving by itself -_- I have no slowdown but it's very annoying to see our ship moving like that. And it appears when you try to approach an enemy ships. It's like they have jamming electronic devices -_-

However, I love the intensity of the combat but some ships need to recheck, I don't know the name of the fighter but during in-game it appears all black perhaps to his bad Shinemaps.

Spoiler:
Hu, is it normal that when you see the super destroyer in the last mission, you die automatically when your Destroyer is destroyed ? Because right after I explode, I'm back to the coursive.

Yes the lag in Earth Defense is atrocious, and things only get buggier if you try to use SCP 3.6.9. A shame cause I was really digging it.

Hi.
Now we're opening new hiring to ED team. What do we need:

-A small group of testers(2-3) who can find bugs and grammar mistakes, especially before releasing "grammar correction" patch
-Sound effect artist
-Music composer
-Effecter
-Model converter
-Somebody who can balance tables
-Advanced FREDers (who know SCP sexps usage and variables)
-Texture artist

Just out of curiosity, why does it need to be used as a mod?  Won't it just override the necessary stuff if I drop it in the main folder?

I've tried that but game doesn't want to overwrite it. I should be solved in a next patch.

Ok, I have a reproducible crash here. In the second mission, the game invariably crashes when I go into the ship selection. (Fatal error.)

It looks great otherwise, aside from hard to read text thanks to menu backgrounds and spelling errors. :)

Was this bug ever fixed? Because I got a crash, and not only did it crash but also my screen went black and I couldn't do much of anything though somehow got my computer to shutdown nicely.
And if I downloaded the demo only recently (ie today) do I need the patch? Or has the patch been integrated into the original download?

           Yeah, necro-thread. Whatever.
I've heard about this mod, but didn't know they had a demo until I noticed one on their forums. I'm sure there are a lot of people in my position.

Never mind that demo, ED plot has turned 180° since then. The demo has nothing to do with it anymore. IIRC.

Yeah.  That's more or less it.  While the demo plot doesn't contradict anything in the new plot, it isn't really relevant, as no connections can be drawn between the two plotlines.

Er, well INF:SCP is totally different from Inferno Release1 but does that mean people shouldn't play R1 anymore?
I mean if it's fun, I'll play it. By the time the final campaign is released I'll probably forget the story from the demo anyway.

Well, I'm playing through it and haven't encountered any bugs. Except for the ship selection screen bug, which I avoid and just take the default ship instead. It's uh . . .humorous, in some ways.

You should have seen the socks conversation I removed.

(It went something like this:

Alpha 3: Anyone seen my socks?
Alpha 4: Uhh, say again, Alpha 3?
Alpha 3: Yeah I lost my socks anyone seen them?
Alpha 2: SOCKS? WTF?!?!?
Alpha 4: Talk to Epsilon 4 about that, I heard she was stealing socks.)

Yeah the pilots are uh, kinda funny. Even the first mission of the demo, I've never seen such apologetic pilots. "Sorry, sorry sorry!"
They're also completely useless I noticed, I think I scored all the kills in the first two missions just about. Well until the Cruiser arrives for the cargo then they actually did something.

Not overly, wasn't sure what was causing I only knew that I wanted to avoid it in future. Maybe the problem was that I was using custom fighters with no Loadout.pcx for the fighter (a safe assumption seeing as how all the fighters use a default shield display rather than their own), but then again the Earth Defense demo doesnt use the launcher at least in the desktop icon, for me to enable the 3d model selection bit. Suppose I could check the directory to see if there's one there.

Well I played through the campaign and it was pretty fun until:
Spoiler:
the enemy started acting like complete idiots and the FRED missions were so stacked in the players favour so as to be unlosable. Like the big "battle of endor" in the asteroid belt, when both the Orions become invulnerable who do you thinks going to win? Or what's so great about the Solaris? It can't even take out an Orion on its own. And yeah the Solaris has beam turrets but so does the Orion so what makes it so great? That its better than the Zagreus or whatever it's called in ED? And then the Galaxy arrives RIGHT after the Solaris gets killed, maybe they should've arrived 5 minutes earlier to help it out. And then again attacking the Galaxy with four Cruiser, and two of them are set to invulnerable. I don't know if I saw a friendly ship actually die before the last mission, unless of course I was specifically supposed to be guarding it. Like if there's a trap, sprung by the enemy, make the friendlies actually take some losses instead of having them all survive (as far as I could tell). Oh wait, one Cruiser died. When it entered the blue zone or the red zone or whatever and exploded for some reason. . . .  And the enemy is quite frankly a bunch of morons, like the one mission were the player attacks a cargo depot in captured fighters. Okay, that could work, but then they call in a friendly cruiser for reinforcements. It's like "Oh, we're getting attacked by the Arabs! Damn them! They stabbed us in the back! Oh what the hell, wait, wait a second, here comes an Earth cruiser. And the two of them are working together . .. maybe they're not Arabs after all." But anyway, was pretty fun except for all that.

And yeah, I know, disregard the demo because it's all changed now with yadda yadda yadda. But for the demo on its own, the above applies.
