Honestly, the gym/workout bit for fitness isn't the be-all-end-all. I used to be very fit, and lapsed with a job that has me behind a desk more and more (trouble with more responsibility is less field work), having young kids, and living in a different part of the country where the activities I once did are a bit harder to access. That said, I hit a milestone I was absolutely not going to accept and decided to do something about this. Never been a bad eater (not much junk food in my diet), but portion size and particularly relative portion size has been an issue - I love bread and cheese. Since tinkering with my diet and portions (with the help of the Weight watchers app, which is seriously great), I'm down 25 pounds in less than two months and going for quite a bit more. And it feels great.
TL;DR - don't let "working out" be a barrier.
Also, I find the WW App and my FitBit to be good "external monitors" to remind me to (1) not snack and (2) get off my ass.
