Tech boards ignore me so I'll ask the HLP gurus!

One day my GT460 was working, the next day...no picture. Same PC from one day to the next, nothing changed and yet no picture. I got the repair shop to test the card and it worked on their pc. Both power connectors are in and I can see the fan spinning. I go in device manager and the card isn't there, only the crappy onboard graphics. My machine flat out refuses to detect the bloody thing. It's seated perfectly, I'm completely stumped as to way this bastard won't work. I really hope it isn't the PCI-E slot that's ****ed, I can't afford to replace any part of this machine.

Any suggestions?

There is a small possiblility that the onboard graphics being enabled is interfering with the 460. Not particularly likely, but possible.

Only issue with completely disabling it in the bios is that if it doesn't fix the problem, you won't have any graphics at all unless you manually reset the bios.

Can you get another card? you could test if the PCI-E is working that way, cause GPU is obviously working.

I don't have another card unfortunately and I'm not about to fork over some cash to get one. LHN, I'll try disabling the onboard to see if that helps, I know how to reset the BIOS so it should be fine.

Do you have more than one gpu capable pci-e slot by chance?

Disabling the onboard didn't help and I don't have more than one PCI-E slot. The card is in there and it has power, there's no reason why it shouldn't be detected by this machine.

Could try giving the connectors all a little clean, try a different card. Keep the onboard disabled. Keeping variables to a minimum and trying again each time. But when items aren't dectected, it is an absolute pain. Stupid device manager dectection thingies... :/

PC fully up-to-date ?
- Try a different card / slot if possible.

Could be that the slot itself is damaged. Which something like that seems fatal for you. Sorry mate.

EDIT:
- Uninstall onboard graphic drivers and install the GT460 again.
- Flash BIOS to latest version.

Before any recommendations: You're sure you don't have warranty on anything right? Cause the option to replace something free is always nice, even if you aren't going to use it any more. Also, you'll obviously need DDR3, I don't know how old your system is so that may or may not be a concern. You can get 8GB (2x4GB) 1600 for about $45 if needed.

AMD: 960T (possible unlock to 6 cores, but the bonus of being only 95w at x4 compared to the usual 125w), just about any Asus board prefered; you get what you pay for. (880G has onboard video, the 870 and 890FX do not)

or Intel: 2500 [k] prefered, though expensive it is considered the best 'bang for your buck' on the market right now. Don't know enough about intel bords to recommend, but I hear MSI isn't doing bad and Asus is still good.

If going for just motherboard and cpu, you can get the 960T and a nice board for about $225-$275USD (***FX is more expensive, but has more features. Don't know what you are looking for), but the 2500(k) is still a preferred option due to it just being better and more future proof. Its all down to what you can afford really.

Sounds like the PCI-E slot is on the fritz, at least that's what I find most likely based on the information at hand. Still entirely possible it's something else, but barring some sort of a software error all the evidence points to the motherboard. I'd probably format and reinstall windows before actually replacing the board, just to be sure. A bit radical, but in the end probably faster than tracking down a software issue that may or may not exist.

Either the PCI-E slot on the fritz, the power supply fundamentally working but not fully, especially if it's been "validated" as working on another machine.

At which point you have to figure out how much to trust that shops declaration of "it works fine here", I'm hoping that they actually physically put it into a machine with you observing and demonstrated it as working.

What are the power levels like on your PSU? Check the voltages and make sure they aren't deviating too much.

Side thought, it would help point to/from the pci-E slot- Grab a linux live disc and give it a run, and see if it sees the card. if it does, that tells you the issue is with windows/something related to software.

I'm afraid I'm not tech-savvy enough to do this, but I'm sure the card has adequate power since the fan spins at a steady rate and the mobo isn't squealing at me.

Linux live disc, how do I get one of those? Do I have to install Linux to use it? I'd rather not lose everything on my HDD just to install another OS. If this is the case is there some other way of checking to see if the slot is functioning correctly?

The idea of live discs is that you can run the OS from the disc without having to install it.
