Title: New wiki user-made ship tables
Post by: MatthTheGeek on May 08, 2020, 02:00:23 pm

Link to Solaris ship tables (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/Solaris_ship_tables)

Link to WoD ship tables (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/Wings_of_Dawn_ship_tables)

So this isn't a new release, but I'm posting it here because this is most relevant to the interests of people looking for new assets to use in mods.

The user-made ship list (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/User-made_Ships) on the wiki is large and it's getting difficult to find anything specific without opening dozens of individual pages. I've spent time those past few weeks wikifying some of the stuff from model dumps in this very subforum, but this only makes the matter worse: there are 688 ship entries in the list and the whole system is getting out of hand.

The User-made ship list does its job as an exhaustive index of fan-made content, but it doesn't constitute in its current state a good tool if you're looking to browse for ships to add in your mod, or if you're looking for a link to a specific model you forgot the name of for example.

I've been toying around with tools I use at work to fill up some nice sortable, collapsible tables with thumbnails and some other info I could parse from the ship pages. The result looks like this:

The process is a bit rudimentary and a lot of data is still not getting parsed or is just missing outright from the individual ship pages, but I hope this will be of some help for all the modpack builders out there.

Please don't start trying to fill the blanks manually for now. The page was built by an automated program on my end that I'm still adding features to, so any changes you do will probably be completely overwritten when I update it in the future. You are, however, welcome to fill the missing info directly on the individual ship pages, and my program will be able to pick them up automatically next time I update the tables.

Enjoy your shopping :) (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/User-made_ship_tables) (remember to press Expand on top right of each table)

This is really fantastic, hopefully people recognise how much effort Matth is going to here. I've already seen a few ships I didn't know about and kind of wanted to make, but that I now don't need to. :)

Ooh, Exile ships! I need this!

EDIT: Matth, be advised that I'm going to be editing the Tech Database entries for the ships in Exile in the near future (along with a bunch of other Exile editing), so hit me up with a PM if you want me to keep you updated so that you can update the wiki if and when it becomes necessary.

Adding pictures to the list rather than clicking in to see each ship is major.  Super kudos to you.

Ps I forgot how much I lover the OTT imperial Fleet back in the day 👍👍

Updated a bunch of TI, SG and Aftermath stuff. Also started doing a bit of cleanup on existing pages, as well as consolidating duplicate pages (like FTF Lancer / UEF Uhlan).

The tables now have 3 image columns. This is in order to better see the available variants of a same ship.

Sorting should now work properly on turret and length columns.

List of edited ships:

Just do your thing, and my program will pick up the changes the next time I update the page :)

"GTG Pandora"...so wait, there's a gas miner named Pandora??? Doesn't that seem (more than) a bit of tempting fate to name a volatile and explosive-prone space vessel after the greek embodiment of chaos??? :nervous:  :nervous:

JFC, what's next? An oil tanker named the GTG Exxon Chaosium captained by one of Captain Hazelwood (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Hazelwood)'s descendants???

"GTG Pandora"...so wait, there's a gas miner named Pandora??? Doesn't that seem (more than) a bit of tempting fate to name a volatile and explosive-prone space vessel after the greek embodiment of chaos??? :nervous:  :nervous:

Your hysterionics only make it so funny, how wrong you are:

1. The name "Pan-dora" lingustically disassembles to "gifted by everyone"; which in the original myth has something to do with the origins of the person Pandora being related to Prometheus; her being gifted by the Olympians (inclduing the famous box) is usually told as a reaction to Prometheus stealing the flame of Hepateus' forge for the otherwise ungifted humans (whose ungifted status in some tellings is Prometheus' fault to begin with, and the theft is more a cover up than an act of charity). The whole gifting thing is an ironic punishment that Prometheus has to watch to learn is lesson - Zeus being a very vindictive personality and all that.
The literal meaning of the name is also why the name persisted as a name for women in Ancient Greece.

2. The mythological box not only contains "all evil" that is then released into the world but also the spark of hope.

3. Most of the authors of Greek myth we are familiar today have "a bit" of misogyn issue, first and foremost Hesiod, who tends to the oldest source on many matters of Ancient Greek myth (including the Pandora's Box-myth). Hence the whole popular perception that women in Ancient Greek literal works are always disruptive. The archeological evidence (e.g. the prominence of status depicting Pandora) calls this into question. It is a widely accepted issue with the textual tradition about the Ancient Greek world.

4. "Chaos" in the Ancient Greek cosmology does not have person-equivalent - though many characters represent disruptive behaviors, the lack of or inversion of proper order (e.g. Polyphemus, the cylcops from the Odyssey, which appears as perversion of the concept of hospitality due to strangers). It doesn't have to, as Chaos exists as the outside to the ordered world ("Cosmos") and is primordial state of all existence. Hence the textual level importance of establishing and maintaining a proper order as prevalent themse in Ancient Greek myth.

well, of course not! ;) You've no doubt seen what happened to all those spaceships and satellites named Icarus...some names are just cursed. :shaking: :nervous: :shaking:

Your hysterionics[sic] only make it so funny, how wrong you are:

If you mean "histrionics," meaning "exaggerated dramatic behavior designed to attract attention," that was exactly my point. :D That said, your post about Pandora is all correct. I likely saw a gas miner (a ship type notorious for big explosions) named "Pandora" and my mind probably thought of "pandemonium" rather than of Pandora herself. Or the image of Pandora's Box opening and all the evils jumping out of it en masse is associated with an explosion in my mind. The two images are similar to my thinking.

It's the list of pages that have been created or edited since the last update. I do a lot of maintenance on existing pages (fixing links, retaking screenshots, merging duplicates, page spacing, etc).

Remember that you can sort the tables by date of last edit if you want to see the latest changes as well.

You haven't gotten the ORI Valhalla from Exile into the database yet, have you? Because not only is its tech description far too overly long at four paragraphs, whoever wrote its description got a lot of its details wrong. For example, the Valhalla description claims the ORD Thor and the ORD Demetrius were both constantly guarding the Valhalla despite the fact that both ships were the personal flagships of High Fleetmaster Glenzmann and Fleetmaster Caliphtys, respectively, and both ships had prominent roles in going on the offensive on behalf of the ORS in both the Martian War and Operation Mjolnir. How could the Thor and the Demetrius be constantly guarding the Valhalla and go on the offensive against the EFN at the same time?

The continuity snarls of Exile as a result of having multiple writers who didn't coordinate their stuff are taking a lot of time for me to untangle. This is just one example among many....

Static prop tables are now available. (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/Static_props)

This is a repository of landscapes, ground assets and space props for use in your missions. There will be no individual page for those models.

Content is still WIP. Enjoy your shopping :)

Remember that in those cases, you can use the search function of the wiki :

In this case the UEI Kumari page is a redirect to the Castalia, but it also finds pages that reference the name, like the Aeglos (which is the older model that was used in early BP versions). So most of the times, even if you're looking at a mod that uses a different name than the user-made list, you can still find your ship page this way.

Goddamn, those look nice (in the case of the Terran ships) and fierce, (in the case of the Kilrathi ships). Most impressive.

EDIT: Just noticed this, and it's probably an Origin error, but assuming (and I realize that assume makes an ass out of u and me) that WC is using modern American military airplane designations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Defense_aerospace_vehicle_designation), then while "F" is obviously for fighters, "C" is for cargo planes, which makes the CF-105 Scimitar medium fighter designated as a cargo fighter more than a little silly. But if this goes back all the way to the original game, then it's undoubtedly a Critical Research Failure (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CriticalResearchFailure) on the part of Origin.

We apologize for the pedantry and nitpicking in this post and return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

I'll need to do that for Exile one day relatively soon...after I finish my other Exile work.
