Title: Are there cinematics?
Post by: Lindley on March 04, 2006, 08:26:29 pm
Never having played Freespace 1 when it first came out, this port has been my first exposure to the game.

Now, I know there are those animations that play during mission briefs, but are there supposed to be full-screen cinematics as well? None played for me, although sometimes a jump in the story seemed to indicate there should be one. Am I missing a file or something?

The original cutscenes are in an interplay proprietary format, and take up alot of space, so yeah, they're not included with the port.  However, it you're playing under Freespace Open, you can downloade versions of the videos that have been converted to Xvid avi files.  There should be a stickied thread in the freespace general forum with instructios on how to find them.

Despite protestations to the contrary I've seen around, the Freespace *2* cutscenes I have are in MVE format, and FS_open seems perfectly able to play them. So the stuff about "FS_open can't handle MVEs" seems to be outdated. I suspect AVIs would use less space, though, so I'll look into replacing them anyway.

So, I downloaded the FS1 cutscenes in AVI format. On the advice of a webpage I found, I moved the FSPort files from the mail Freespace 2 folder to Freespace 2/fsport/, and added the cutscenes to that folder.

Now, the Freespace campaign no longer shows up on the Campaigns list in the main hall; I'm assuming that normally, you'd use the launcher to select FSPort with this configuration. However, OSX doesn't *have* a launcher yet.

I can't find the command line argument required to specify a mod directly to FS_open. Could you tell me what that should be?

Only on Mac and Linux.  The Windows builds have sound issues.

fs2_open_r -mod fsport

All right. I've got the FS1 cutscenes in avi format, and I've figured out how to get the command line options working in FS_Open.

But nevertheless, the FS1 cinematics do not play. When starting up, I see the FS2 intro movie, even though I'm running with -mod fsport (and I know it's working because the FS1 campaign is available to me in the campaigns list).

Is it a filename issue? Should I change "intro.avi" to "INTRO.AVI" or something?

The FS1 cinematics are in Freespace2/fsport/data/movies/.

It's probably a priority issue.  Try moving intro.avi into your main FS2 folder.

At least with the previous version of the Port, I don't recall having any problems with putting the FS1 cutcenes directly in the "fsport" folder and keeping the FS2 cutscenes in another mod folder (whether "mediavps" or something equivalent).  I do seem to remember that the FS2 intro.avi, if placed in the main folder, seemed to override the FS1 version in the mod folder.

This wouldn't be an FSPort problem; it would be a priority problem or an SCP bug.

Problem identified. AVI support isn't in the current OSX build. Are there mpg versions of the FS1 cutscenes?

AFAIK, there's no Video-Support at all in the Linux/Mac OS Builds...
Only in the "official" 3.6.7-Build there's MVE Support.

Meh. Oh well. It'll be fixed in time.

(I don't suppose it's legally possible to get the FS1 cinematics in MVE format?)

www.ebay.com
search: FreeSpace Great War (or better yet, FreeSpace Great War Silent Threat , although there's no cutscenes added in ST, I hear there are some odd-ball movies hidden in one of the folders.)
Currently, (3-15-6 5:30 PM EST) FS is lowest @ $.99 + $3.50 shipping (US$) ( search for item 8267678262 , one available )
!!!
FS + Silent Threat is next, I found one (search item 8267141980 , 4 available ) that's $7.95 + $5.00 shipping, and it includes Descent 3 & D3 Mercenary expansion!!

Both of those sellers are 98% or more positive ratings
PS I am in no way affiliated w/ eBay, or either of those two sellers.  Just tryin' to help out.
PPS If you run into problems running FS 1 retail, PM me and I'll see if I can help.
