This forum had been inactive for quite a while, someone might start thinking we had gone the way of the dodo, as so many other projects.
I´m glad to see that people are at least browsing it.
Now, where´s my pizza? I´m hungry here!! :D

Our public forum is as dead as they come. Doesnt matter, it'll be just more of a surprise when they'll all be 0wned by TVWP's magnificence. :D

Oh, we're dead.  I killed us.  Then I used necromancy to bring us back to live.

Now get back to work zombie slaves!

Well, since you aren't dead, when's the release date? :)
Title: We are not dead!

Answer:

When it's done.

There's still a lot to be done, but we are making swift progress.

When it's done. ^.^

Though seriously Chapter One IMHO is 78-87% ready.

Considering the little time span the campaign has actually been productive, we can be pretty proud I daresay :)

We could probably boost that number a lot higher if we dropped the voice acting.  There's a lot of text in our missions.

I still haven't looked at the stuff properly, and I have to say it looks really really promising.

Somewhere in the Derelict/Warzone rank of the year 200x

Don't turn this into yet another arrow thread. :sigh:

And no, we wont drop voice acting. It's a major part of our campaign, and it wouldn't be half as good without it.

Yep. Too much indeed.

Stop pressuring us to release screenies! We're busy working on the actual content! We can't waste time taking screenshots... ;)
Title: We are not dead!
Post by: TopAce on September 10, 2004, 03:33:46 pm
Take the SWC as an example: We have enough time to take screenshots and make progress as well. :thepimp:
Hire someone whose job is to take screenshots only, it would save much time and your popularity will certainly increase.

From what I've seen, TVWP has (or will have) the highest visual quality of any campaigns in the make.

I mean, name me ONE other campaign that 100% supports alpha_envmapping. :)

I havent seen a lot MT screenies, I have to admit, though.

-edit: TopAce: I'm not a huge fan of posting semi-decent half-done screenshots. I actually dislike the whole idea of too much screenshots and stuff. The TVWP should be something fresh and surprising (like when you first played the retail campaigns), not like something you already know inside-out.

or only in-game chatter?

what about any new music?

Since simulated speech never worked for all of us, sounds crappy, and is unnecessary, that won't do.

I have FREDed for four years, yet I only have a hundred-something posts, so everyone treats me like a n00b. Thus, I have not applied for anyone else's project, but have started my own, the Legacy campaign.

Although the FA has tried to amend this (by doing newbie campaigns), many good FREDers (new to forum but not to FRED) are lost due to low post counts. Quite sad.

Makes me SOOOOOO angry. If these projects accepted more FREDers, maybe they would be done by now.

Worth thinking about, eh?

Really? Is that so true?

If you wait to join the Select sports team, there may be no slots open by the time you decide to join. If you wait to FRED that one mission, your campaign/project may die due to the public's lack of interest, to give two examples.

Sorry if I annoyed anyone, i'll leave now.

Well, bad example. But still, patience is a virtue is a worthless saying.

New Example: Waiting all day long to go to the movies instead of just going. By the time you get there, the line is freakin' huge, and sometimes they even run out of snacks (rarely, however).

Or...or...how about waiting to propose? If you do it to late, some sucka' may beat you to it.

Or, uh...patiently waiting for someone to hand life to you on a silver platter? STUPID! Go take life! :p

Uh...or waiting to post this witty comeback! Yes! If I waited too long, it would be less witty (possible response: "was it ever?!").

Ha! Beat that! Oh, and it tis spelled chief, not cheif! Hoo-ha ha!

Umm...i'll leave now. I think i'm starting to hijack this thread...sorry to all those caught in the middle of this rant.

What the crap?! You called me chief?! Woah. Took a while for that to sink in.

First is always the hardest...

The second chapter will have alot of the first's models, so all of that work should be done, for the most part... (Save for the new models)

That depends on how you define "active".  It's a bit of a long story.  Here's a summary:

It started out as just a mod by Solatar and Thor, and they were bouncing around ideas for doing missions throughout the entire T-V war timeline.  Then I came on and started looking for stuff we could use... staff, models, etc.  At some point we recruited Eishtmo, who provided us with a timeline and the hint of a backstory.

We finally got serious when I wrote the storyline for chapter 1, as we then had a mission outline and a structure for the first chapter of the campaign.  I was kind of running the campaign myself at that point, as everybody was incredibly busy.  Over the course of a year, I managed to scrounge up enough models to make a basic Terran fleet.  Then we started FREDding, albeit very slowly.

Then, two very fortuitous things happened in quick succession: Blaise Russel and Lightspeed. :) That's when we really got active.  BR has been churning out missions like crazy, and LS has been doing similarly great work with graphics and cleaning up our models (as well as doing some table reengineering and FREDding on the side).  In addition to them, we have Raa and Galemp doing models, Lt. Cannonfodder doing cutscenes, and Flipside doing music.

So that about brings us to the present day.  Each paragraph covers approximately one year.
Title: We are not dead!
Post by: Blitzerland on September 18, 2004, 04:42:40 pm
That about answers it.

For two years you guys mostly just planned and brainstormed?! Well...at least that means the story should be REALLY good :)

I'm glad to hear that you're making progress. You should hear the cats purr.

Oh! Oh! When you guys start beta testing...let me know...

*composure lost*

PLEASE LET ME BETA TEST IT! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

*composure regained*

Good luck guys. This is the one campaign i'm actually truly excited about (Inferno comes in second).

and yes...the big turrets might still use more punch

Actually all the weapons are going to be adjusted according to their proportionate damage. Don't worry, we got it covered.

I think we'll also see if we can make some good capship weapons so that T-V war capships aren't sitting ducks.  Methinks ship-to-ship torpedoes would work nicely. ;7

Sounds good, Goober. Inferno did something similar, and it worked pretty well.

I second that!! Me loves torpedoes, quite fun to chase down and kill.
I suggest also having a small torpedoe boat, like a big bomber, that carries about 4 of them buggers.
There is nothing more thrilling in space-sims than watching a cap ship making a broadside torpedoe attack on another cap ship. It´s visually stunning!! ;7

TrashMan...

you seem to forget we're NOWHERE near FS1's tech level.

Unless said torpedo barrage is apart of a movie called "Wing Commander", then it's generally lame because the movie itself is awful in the extreme. (What space sims havetorpedo barrages anyway?)

In Fs1, all capital ships had were blob turrets. Actually, blob turrets are kinda powerful. In mission 4 of my campaign, three Aeolus cruisers attack a Deimos (6 blob turrets total), and the blobs are kinda powerful. They bring down the Deimos' health  fairly quickly (compared with primaries), and one hit (or so) from a large blob takes out a Deimos turret.

I always pictured them as weak...until I looked closer. They still suck on most ships that have them spread out. They still are basicly just fillers.

Anyways, back on topic. If blobs and a few missle launchers were all Fs1 had, what will TVWP have?

Little kinetic pea-shooters? Or just downgraded versions of the good ol' blob turrets?

Oh, and I can't wait to see the ML-16's predecesor.

EDIT: The ML-2...jams every five shots...does 1% damage to a light fighter every twenty shots...drains all energy in five seconds...

Hopefully not that bad. :D

Read the FAQ thread - everything is proportional.  The ML-16 is a lot more powerful against a fighter with a fraction of the Apollo's hull strength. ;)

Starlancer, for one. Torpedoes are its main weapons. No beams.
But chances are you haven´t even heard of this game, as it happens with many others. It got a bad rep because of the producer company, Bill Gate´s finnest.
You should try it, it has one of the best uses of torpedoes in games that i ever seen.

Are you trying to tell me there are no Terran Huge Turrets in T-W war? What did they shoot eachother with? Vacuum?

No seriously, the weapons I posted above are well balanced. (for shielded ships at least..you might wanna reduce the damage of the normal and anti-bomber turrets)

The terran/vasudan turret fires fast and travels fast doing small damage.

The anti-bomber turret fires slow, travels slow, but packs a punch.

The Terran/Vasudan Huge turret fires VERZ slow, can target onlz capships and deals a lot of damage..

What is this - a bring and buy sale?

And if you want a hint, absolutely no laser and plasma weaponry is mounted on ANY capital ships.

Eh?

Humanity mastered subspace and construction of large speships and it hasn't STILL develpoed a laser gun??????

What the hell are they using????
And the TW war lasted 14 years...not 100.. the tech difference cannot be too big..

Oh...allmost forgot - if you want those ships for your campaigh, get them here:

HERE (http://www.swooh.com/peon/Trashman/Misc/PirateShips.zip)

and I posted a wrong pic of the first one - it actually has an extra hangarbay on the bottom.

They have laser like weapons, but they're only on the big cap ships to start with.  A little fighter isn't going to carry a decent energy weapon until A) the weapon's size is reduced and B) the reactors on the fighters produce enough energy for them to be useful in combat without sacrficing speed/manuverablity.  It's a delicate balance, and for a time (and into the 14 Year War) it's in favor of slug flingers over lasers.

I can't believe it's been so long since we started.  Kind of scary actually.

Just to point on one or two things:

According to the tech room descriptions, the Orion has been around for a while - at the last 7 years of the war.

An Orion is a big investment and takes long to build, so I wager they allready have developed weapons to use on the Orion before that.

Starting with weaker, less known weapon is o.k. - after all, technology develops during a war, but don't overo it. You don't go building 2km warships with slinghots on them..

Since a war has lasted for so long, it must have pretty depelted both sides. It is common practice to re-fit civilian vessels to act as escort carriers/cruisers. Sometimes unfinished civilian hulls on the scafflods have been used to make cariers and warships.

I'm kinda of a military freak and I've read all there is to read on the greates naval battles in history (the battles on the Pacific in particular).

B.t.w. - I say again. Do you need help with your project?

We still haven't started the war with Vasuda yet. And that is the begining of the 14 year war. This is the unification war.

Once the actual war begins with the Vasudans, there'll be 7 years to work up to the Orion. So it fits.

It's kinda hard to find a loophole in Eishtmo's stories.

Although we did have some good debates ( battles? ;) )

Might be just me, but i'm getting a bit fed up with this thread.

It's not like we go to other campaign's forums and try forcing our own ideas on them - ESPECIALLY when that campaign is already way beyond the stage of the initial content development.

I'm fine with leaving this thread open unless it turns into a flame-fest.  It's public discussion, after all, which is a good thing for any hosted project.  And the populace is free to offer ideas - they do it all the time in the Inferno forum.  We aren't obligated to use any of them, of course, but someone might post something we hadn't thought of. :)

TrashMan, Blitzerland, and others: TVWP doesn't need help at the moment; we've got all our bases covered.  What we need most is more free time, which I doubt you could provide. ;)

I don't think so.

Getting someone who is decided to throw overboard all our current work (with an IMHO better consistency) for something he belives right is rather counter-productive.

Please, don't compare us to Inferno. Please. Nothing could be so far from truth.

I agree about leaving this open for now, though. As you said, it's a public discussion, even though it may be noted to be absolutely off-topic.
